GM, UAW reach tentative agreement at striking Fairfax plant

05/21/2008, 10:27 AM

By Drew Johnson

After a strike that lasted nearly three weeks, General Motors has reached a tentative agreement with the local UAW that staffs its Fairfax production plant in Kansas City, Kansas. The Fairfax facility produces GM’s hot-selling Chevrolet Malibu, but has been idle since Local 31 went on strike on May 5.

According to Automotive News, the biggest disagreement in contract talks has been over “the role of seniority in job placement.”

The strike at the Fairfax plant — which also produces the Saturn Aura — has cost GM about 11,500 units of production.

Through the first four months of the year, Malibu sales were up 18 percent while GM’s overall sales were down 12 percent.

Should’ve been handled back in October ‘07.

The Malibu is one of the best looking cars on the road. Everytime I walk past one I have to stop and stare a bit. What a transformation from the old one.

Note the lack of reader interest in UAW/GM/contract stories on LLN these days. Classic fatigue.
