Most of the posted comments make me laugh. Sounds alot like sour grapes. What does anyone care what someone else drives. If you don’t like the H2 then don’t buy it. I didn’t like the Honda so I didn’t buy one. I liked the H2 so I bought that instead. And to your point that these vehicles are never taken off road that too is incorrect. My family takes ours off road every month when we go away for family weekend trips. Some people do disneyland,some people sit in front of the TV and some of us do river trips and desert trips. As long as we are together doing things as a family, I dont see what the big deal is.
I sure would not tell you how to spend your time or money…please do not tell me how to spend mine.

I have a big SUV and you know what i love it. I can put my bike in the back and always carry all my stuff without worring about space. And the thing is i am willing to pay the extra for that space and that convinience. Plus the new technology that turns cilinders on and off acording to how much power you need saves alot of gas aswell.

Think of it this way, for every hybrid Toyota sells to Patrick, they get to continue selling those big, bad SUV’s (read Sequoia, for one) to the rest of us without incurring a penalty from the Government for not meeting the CAFE standards. That’s why hybrids are here today, to help the automakers meet the CAFE standard, all the while continuing to sell large, profitable SUV’s to the majority of the car buying public. A Hybrid owner loses money in the long run, all in the name of the “environment”, but if they’re dumb enough to buy into this crap, more power to ‘em !

Go to mbusa.com and load the GL 450 with every option and prove yourself wrong. My loaded 07 Tahoe LTZ=$48K. Similarly optioned GL450=$72K.

Not at all “same sort of money.”

And while I recognize the GL450 is a superior truck to the Tahoe, I’m not at ALL “shortchanged” by my choice. In fact, I was VERY suprised at the quality and value of this new line of Chevy trucks. No other 50k-rang truck in the market today offers the same finish, fuel economy and room. Its even got flex fuel, compatible with E85 Ethanol from corn.

trust me, it’s a great vehicle if you have a valid need for a large SUV.

Well if you do average that good let me know if you want to sell your car because I would love to get rid of my gas saver (work car) 1999 Toyota Corolla (four banger) witch averages about 32 MPG for a Luxury V8 Audi that gets 28 MPG. Edmunds says it gets 17/25, but if you average higher than both you are lucky. Any way have a great day.

If you can afford an SUV and the gas then go for one. If you are an evironmentalist, buy a bicycle to save the polutant, money and let the SUV guys to run over you; then the trees will benifit from that hahaha

hey I am not going to argue what cars you have and what you don’t have, but your Audi A8 does not get 28 MPG. Sorry, but I owned a 1998 Audi A4 V6 and I avaraged 22 MPG, there is no way a 4.2L V8 290hp luxury car averaging 28 MPG. Luxury cars average just slightly less than SUVs. So don’t lie.
PS. 2006 Audi A8 takes something like 18 MPG, and they have improved fuel economy.

all this really shows is what the analyst have been saying for years, that gas in the states is still ridiculously cheap!! i know that even with gas being around 2.95 a gallon i still haven’t changed my driving habits. i haven’t felt the hit yet, and i fill up twice a week. and no i’m not rich. to be honest though, the gas only cost what it does because of state and federal taxes. (60-45% of the price we pay for a gallon of gas) everywhere else in the world gas is artificially expensive. foriegn goverments have decided to purposely tax the hell out of gas to control fuel consumption and the driving habits of their citizens. thats not really a bad thing in Europe and japan, when you have urban crowding and limited space. but in the US where our whole economy runs on wheeled transportation in some form or another, it’s just not prudent or desireble.

LOPZ, I can’t believe I am actually taking time out of my day to comment on your idiocy but since no one’s done it for you in the past, obviously I should attempt to now.

Since you don’t know how to read to many sentances at once I’ll spell it out for you here:

A STRONG majority of SUV drivers don’t need an SUV that gets less than 20-25 mpg for every day driving. If you have 5 kids AND go towing large equipment quite often then fine.

If you don’t have the kids, you don’t need the SUV. Most trucks will get better gas mileage than an SUV and they’ll tow better as well. If you do have the kids and you don’t need to tow, you don’t have to get an Escalade, there are smaller SUVs that will fit your needs. Or get a wagon, or a minivan. Oh wait, you want a status symbol because you’re a pompous ass.

And Al Bundy, I wasn’t bashing GM, read posts before you go on ignorant rants. It’s any car company that makes oversized vehicles that get low gas mileage, Ford or any foreign car maker included. Most foreign car makers don’t have big ass SUVs though.

Both sides are making good points. But let’s face it, what is being debated here is that there is a tipping point(and many say we are at that point) when making the right INDIVIDUAL decisions will make a BIG difference on the following Big Picture issues in this country today:

– American dependence on foreign oil
– Slowing climate change & global warming
– Reducing or eliminating the possibility of more American lives lost to defend the oil we need to power our cars/trucks/businesses, etc. here in the US
– Insuring future American Jobs (as in companies like GM & Ford) by way of newer technological solutions, rather than the status-quo, gas guzzling products

Do some people need big SUVs? Sure! But unfortunately, too many do not. I think we all just need to get away from this “Me, Me, Me” attitude and look at the bigger picture before we make our next car-buying decisions.
