Nissan could do a lot for GM on the product end. There is a lot of lame product in the GM lineup and there is far too much mediocrity flying around too many brands. I'd say kill Buick, Pontiac, Hummer and GMC. Chevy is a rental fleet brand anyways so pull them from the buying public and move the Corvette over to either and individual nameplate or make it a Cadillac.

Nissan could supply the cars since the Altima and Maxima are miles ahead in performance (and you can buy them with a stick) and since Ghosn is so good at cutting the fat, he could stop GM's addiction to SUV's.

But I would much rather Nissan stay away from GM and concentrate on themselves. GM is on too much of a downward spiral quality wise and style-wise. They're still too busy pimpin the Camaro and SUV's.

No Piablo, my broken Caddy is a 2004 SRX AWD V8 that has been driven more by the mechanics at the dealership than myself. It is a pile of shit. I am on my second tranny, my Northstar motor is drinking a quart of oil every two weeks, My dashboard lights up like a christmas tree and the brakes have failed twice while cruising on the highway (One side, causing a severe pull to the right).

I paid almost 60 thousand dollars for this pile of crap and the trade in value at the moment is 27k if I were to look for something different. So I'll just keep letting the service dept. fix it until it meets its timely death from a tree or a cliff.

Can't wait until this is somebody elses nightmare.

This is just bullshit negotiating tactics from GM.
GMs MarketCap is a measly $20B compared to $50B for Nissan and $30B for Renault - they could easily take over GM strip out the good parts and spit out the parts they didn't like

I have to agree with everything Piablo said. Ghosn went too far and cut off too many good sides but he may have valid reasons.

OK children, let's get this straight. The idea for this alliance was not GM's but that of one large investor, Kirk Kerkorian. Kerkorian is not trying to save GM but to fatten his own wallet.

GM is the largest auto manufacturer in the world. It may not be dominant in Europe and Japan, but it has a presence in both markets. Renault has zero presence in the US. Nissan is on the decline here. It is Renault/Nissan which want a piece of GM and not the other way around.

That's like a fat dude asking a hot woman to pay him for sex because he weighs more.
.
WTF is GM thinking? .... "yes you can rescue me from death, but you'll have to pay me for the pleasure of doing so."

Broken Caddy, you wouldn't happen to be a Cimmaron would you? Haha, anyway... Nissan will not be beating GM at much of anything in the next decade. I happen to own an '06 XTerra and love it. But the staff that collaborated to bring us such products as the new XTerra, and the new Maxima, and the somewhat new Z, are all gone. They left. Actually, Nissan left THEM. Ghosn fixed Nissan, yes. But he didn't stop there and he ended up breaking the company again. Those vehicles I mentioned came out in part from the old California studio which no longer exists. The US headquarters has now been relocated to Tennesee, Carlos's idea. Yes, right in the heart of GM lovin customer country. Nissan, has no future. As much as you may dislike GM, just know that Nissan needs GM's help. That's saying something.

This deal is looking like it's going to fail any minute now. GM should look elsewhere for a partnership. Maybe Renault/Nissan will have better luck with Ford negotiations.

Ghosn and his crew need to stop wasting their time on this and get back to building kickass product. As a twist on the old saying, "If you can't join em, BEAT em" and I would love to see Nissan kick it up a notch and kick GM's sorry ass in the marketplace.

Well I would imagine the Fiat deal still has Ricky twitching with nightmares. Sounds like he's trying to pull a "Fiat" on them!

It's true GM might have a higher value in North America, but in Europe they are small and in Japan non existant. Therefore Ghosn could ask payment from GM to step into the partneship, as Renault & Nissan have a higher value in those markets.
It looks like GM executives are playing games.
If they don't want to play- just say so.
