General Motors has no plans to do an “employee discount” style summer sale this year, says marketing chief Mark LaNeve. “We’re not planning on any big bang, GM-wide incentives. We are going to be aggressive. We are going to have summer sell down programs, but they’ll be executed by division,” he said. The amount of incentives “is going to be driven by the competition. We’re not going to let them run away and hide from us.” Speaking with the Detroit News, LaNeve reiterated comments by other executives, saying, GM is hoping to “fast-track” the new Camaro. “Based on the reaction to it, it’d be a great product for us not only for volume but from an image standpoint,” he said.

In other related news: GM sales slip considerably because people will not buy GM cars unless they are priced well below what the sticker says. With the exception of the Corvette and their trucks no one gives a crap about GM cars and will not even consider one unless they’re heavily discounted.

I concur Captain. I can’t believe people still buy NEW “American” vehicles. It’s about woth half the price in the 2nd-3rd year (with exception to Vette), unlike the “foreign” competition.

For all of you naysayers please note the recent Camry and Avalon recalls, and the strong sales of the Solstice, Sky, new SUVs, and Impala with value (no discount) pricing.

No Red tag giveaway this year???
Doubt it. At the very least, we will see a the leftover capacity from the current models blown out by the end of the summer, just like last fall.
There just isn’t a whole lot of “Gotta have” products at GM IMO.

Is this a joke? Are they threatening us? Have they become so certain that another 9 billion won’t be lost this year that discounts have concluded? I believe the phrase “driven by the competition”, means there will indeed be price cuts. It’ll have another name, but expect the same incentives as last summer.

They did an internal poll: their workers did not want to buy one of the cars they made. (GM dealers won’t buy GM bonds either..)
Next offer: the discount + 0% for 60mos + a guarantee they’ll have a paycheck (they didn’t say ‘job’) for 60mos.

The Solstice, Sky, Escalade, and Z06’s I’m sure are selling very hot right now. Every manufacturer should have atleast 1 car that will sell for sticker on a daily basis. But once demand is met it goes cold and they refuse to change things. Dodge has the Caliber, Ford has the Fusion, we all know Hybrids are hot, but domestics are losing money each sale because of their overhead. Imports are making profit on each car and gaining control. I hope the Saturn Sky Redline is what will change everyone’s view of Saturn.

You guys crack me up! I bet you are all the same ones who roll your eyes and make comments about GM needing to make better cars, and that foreign cars are better. PLEASE!!! If GM needs to make better cars, and get out of a bad slump, how do you expect them to do it? Magic? They need to start being “normal” with what they’ve got, and then they need to invest and get better. You guys are not really thinking about this, before you comment, are you?

#9, you are pathetic. You can’t even support your statement with a logical comment or argument. What’s bad for GM is bad for the country. In GM’s lineup, there’s a car for every niche, with every styling direction imaginable, and all you pathetic whimps do is complain because your head gasket leaked or your dome light fell off. The misconception of GM making “unreliable” cars is older than me for God’s sake. Look at how many recalls Toyota has made in recent years. In the meantime, the Japanese are being flamed for posting false horsepower ratings on their window stickers. America doesn’t stoop to such low levels to win customers over. And if you think your money pays for American workers when you buy a Toyota, you are sadly mistaken. Your money goes straight to Japan, no matter where in the poverty-stricken southern United States you can find a Toyota dealer.
