GMC Acadia awarded “Top Pick” crash test award

08/26/2008, 8:53 AM

By Andrew Ganz

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has given the GMC Acadia crossover its highest award, the “Top Pick” for the vehicle’s performance in front, side and rear-impact crash testing. The Acadia, essentially the the same vehicle as the new Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave and Saturn Outlook, is tied at the top of the pack for large SUVs, according to IIHS.

IIHS used a GMC Acadia SLE 4WD model for testing, though the agency says that the rating will apply to the very similar Lambda-platform Traverse, Enclave and Outlook. The Acadia tested aced the front barrier, side moving barrier and rear impact tests and features standard electronic stability control. Of the three full-size vehicles in the “Large SUV” class, the Acadia and Audi’s Q7 are tied at the top with “Top Pick” status. The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, the final vehicle in the class, earned “acceptable” side-impact results.

Great. At least GM is making good progress on the safety front. This is one area where I’d like to see all manufacturers succeed, ESPECIALLY chinese automakers, as people’s lives are on the line if something goes wrong…

Wow, all that and it’s a driver short of tipping the scales at 5,000 lbs. Give me the same size vehicle that achieves these results and comes in a half ton less and I might be impressed.

Wow, this is fascinating news. I once wrecked a Caprice Classic 9C1 police car.

HRR, why is it whenever there’s an article about safety you always claim you wrecked a cop car? we get it, already.

The question is, was HRR driving the cop car? Or did he cause a cop to crash?

So, is the Acadia a crossover, a large SUV, or just an ugly truck?

Johnnycanuck, how can you be a redneck if you’re Canadian?

Ok, that’s either creepy or being p*$$y whipped that your wife checks out your LLN blogging. Anyway, I guess you guys didn’t know that you can buy used police cars from car auctions. This was an ex Lake County Sheriff’s car. I bought it to pull the drivetrain and put in a street rod. I heard they were quick cars which led to seeing just how quick one day after work, which led to stopping to play pool and have a few beers, which led to people asking what I wanted with the car, which led to “Because it’s actually pretty quick”, before I knew it I was speeding like hell down a rural road here in northern FL, swerved to miss a deer, ran the car halfway up a bank, rolled it on it’s side, over the roof, on the other side through several fence posts and into an orange grove. A friend towed it back to my garage, and after several arguements between a bunch of beer buzzed “rednecks” I was convinced to go to the hospital to get checked out and told them I was in a “racing” accident, I was fine, had my seatbelt on and would never do that $H!T again after drinking. That car lives on powering my ‘50 Chevy pickup. Thanks for being concerned.

Oh, yeah, we knew that you can buy used cop cars from auctions. Well, at least, I did.

We’re just messing with you. At least you have a decent sense of humor about it.

LMAO johnnycanuck! I always appreciate your witty and amusing comments! Good to see some people on here have a good sense of humor, and don’t take everything personally.

Yeah, glad to see the Acadia did well.

But what of the other vehicles involved in collisions with such behemoths? Why do these crash tests not consider the incompatibility issue ever-present between SUVs and passenger cars? Whether the fault of the SUV driver or other does not matter; if a single person suffers over the arrogance of a corporation or shortcomings of a governing body, the very fabric of our society is undermined and our liberty counts of nothing. A true shame that in a relevant article such an issue is not even mentioned by otherwise decent LLN journalists.
