2009 GMC Terrain [spied again]

As of late, General Motors has been spreading its SUV wealth pretty evenly among all of its brands. Buick, GMC and Saturn all have SUVs based on GM's Lambda platform — the Enclave, Acadia and Outlook, respectively — and Chevrolet will soon get its own Lambda-based vehicle in the form of the Chevrolet Traverse. And GM's SUV platform-sharing only looks to be spreading, as evidenced by these latest photos.

By the looks this latest prototype, it appears that a second variation of GM's revamped Theta platform — which will underpin the next-generation Chevrolet Equinox — has now begun testing. Dubbed the GMC Terrain, the new SUV will replace the Pontiac Torrent.

The grille shape visible through the front mesh looks to be a large, blocky opening, as is par for the course for GMC vehicles. This particular prototype looks to have a mesh grille, indicating it could be a test vehicle for a range-topping Denali trim level. The headlight design stretches horizontally, as opposed to the Cadillac BRX's vertical headlight clusters, and the Terrain looks as though it will have a flat roofline — as opposed to the BRX's sloped roofline — for improved cargo space.

GM already unveiled a "Terrain" at the Kuwait Auto Show last year, but that model was nothing more than a GMC-badged Saturn Vue for overseas markets. It's clear from these shots that this U.S.-market model will get unique sheetmetal to distinguish itself from its platform-sharing brethren. We expect GMC's new SUV to bow sometime in 2009 as a 2010 model.

  1. i have a feeling that this is a mule for the Saab 9-4X. camo at the front is too much to guess anything, but the roofline, angular door-frame and split taillights are all very like the 9-4X biopower concept

  9. Mongoloid? I'll bet I'm at least twice as attractive as you, your worthless piece of trash … not to mention at least twice as intelligent … kill yourself … you offer nothing of value here.

  10. Yes, someone needs to tell GM (and Toyota) to stop coming out with SUVs, CUVs, and trucks too. It's almost like people buy them or something. Or almost like they're smarter than us brilliant LLN readers. Why do they not listen to us???? Strange.

If only the average family of four could care about the planet and be more like college students and buy little Honda Civics just big enough to fit a bong and a backpack.

  15. cadycts, I think you are right.. the greenhouse is distinctive, and shaped very much like the 9-4X concept, right down to the door handle placement. I think the GMC Terrain will share everything but the fasciae with the upcoming Equinox.

  16. Because GM is updating it's SUV, that doesn't make it a negative thing. For those who think GM should stop making SUV, get a life! I don't see that group pick on Toyota and Honda, so that must mean it's ok for Toyota and Honda to make them but it is evil for GM to build them.! To me that's anti-American. I believe this kind of thinking comes from the younger generation and if they keep it up, whoever they may be, the US will someday become a second rate nation. Wake-up and start taking pride in this country!!!!!

  17. This is not a huge story, the GMC terrain is basically a Pontiac Torrent. That model will switch from Pontiac to GMC next year, where it really belonged all along.

As for whether people in this country are looking for a vehicle like this, all I can say is they still seem to be selling pretty well. Some people need capacity to carry 5 passengers and groceries, and need some sort of 4wd to beet. This fits the bill nicely, thank you very much!

  18. Tundra sales are eating GM, Ford and Chrysler sales. There is no net sales "increase". Only fewer numbers of buyers spread across more venders. (Nissan helps spreads it a tiny little bit thinner.)
The Cobolt should be GM's big seller. The Focus should be Ford's.
Seen the Versa and Fit sales numbers ??? Morons…

  20. Hmmmmmm I dont know who's CUV this will end up being. But i dont think the April 7th 2008 pic's are the same CUV as the April 4th Pic. If I had to guess I think the April 7th pic's is the chevy's (look at the grill looks like chevy malibu's grill and the April 4th pic's is the Saab again look at the grill it has the wide opening in the center and to two smaller ones on each side and the roof line looks lower and more angular in the back like the Saab concept

  23. They're not "coming out" with SUVs so much as they're spreading their sales across their brands. Looks like they're doing a good job of differentiating them, too.

They're probably spreading this architecture among their brands because these vehicles will replace the bigger, heavier SUVs in the lineup, helping their respective brands to meet CAFE. This architecture can handle the mild hybrid system AND the upcoming two-mode and plug-in hybrid systems.

Beats the hell out of M-B, BMW and Toyota acutally coming out with more SUVs (MLK, GL, X1, X6, Venza). And the Toyotas actually get poorer mileage than their predecessors.

  24. Also, this is obviously the GMC model. Those squared-off wheel arches are not Saab-like at all. And I don't see how those taillights are "split". They look pretty horizontal, like the Acadia's do.

  25. DOA. Price of gas will kill it. The segment who could bought it last year will hunt down Saturn Astra.

  26. its replacing the torrent. its not another one on the market, its just a different one. It fixes pontiac back to the performance side and continues the GMC truck trend.

  27. I never did like the front end styling of the Torrent. Maybe this will be more Acadia like

  28. Looks like another winner for GM. Class leading style, quality, dependibility and fuel economy mean that you'll be buying the best with GM. Should be yet another nail in the coffin for the import domination ini this Country. The American Revolution is making another kill.
