It was nearly one year ago to the day that Leftlane reported on the promotion of Tom Stephens to the role of chief technical officer for General Motors, but today the news of another career change for the executive is of a different nature.

After a 43-year career with The General, Tom Stephens has decided to call it quits and enjoy the fruits of his labor in retirement. Stephens will be leaving his post as CTO and GM vice chairman as of April 1, 2012.

“Tom Stephens is an engineering icon within our company and within our industry,” said GM chairman and CEO Dan Akerson in a statement. “We have all benefited greatly from his passion, wisdom, and commitment to product excellence. His talent and contributions to GM are deeply appreciated and his expertise will be missed.”

By the time of his retirement, Stephens will have served 14 months as CTO, 43 years in total with the automaker, including two as the head of global product operations after succeeding Bob Lutz.

GM has not yet named the successor for Stephens.
