GM’s gotten some of their act together, but their still focusing too much on the unions and how to cut costs on their vehicles while coming out with decent products. I will admit that much of GM’s problem is of their own doing. They have lagged behind in small car development for years while reaping the benefits of the SUV craze. Too bad they didn’t have the brains to re-invest the profits from all those Tahoes, Yukons, & Escalades back into R&D or a little bit of market research. Honda & Toyota are both on their second generation of hybrid vehicles and GM has yet to produce one.
What really gets me is why they haven’t taken some drastic measures to save themselves. GM’s European and Austrailian cars are competent offerings in their respective fields. Why not develop a crash program to get them up to US safety standards, slap a bowtie on the front, and start stamping them out over here? It would certainly cost less to convert a few of the truck factories over so they can produce rebadged Opels and Vauxhalls than to try and develop a whole new range of cars to “save the company”.

This BS about the major manufacturers sitting on all of this technology because they want to keep building gas engines makes me sick.

You don’t think that all the major automakers want nothing more than to finally take the automobile out of the environmental debate? The technology might exist to build electric vehicles on a cottage-industry level, but there are still enormous mass-production and infrastructure issues that are only now being looked at because there’s, ahem, consumer DEMAND for it now that oil prices are sky-high.

Consumers need to take responsibility. It isn’t the fault of the companies that there are SUVs in every garage. You had to part with your hard-earned first.

Very entertaining: Bush is the cause of all the problems. Well, he was elected either by dumb and stupid nation or we got dumber and even more stupid since 2000. Reality is that he can not bail or not bail any company: it requires the act of congress. Very same congress who hates his guts and was elected by the same electorate who elected Bush. I happen to agree, that it is not function of government to bail out either banks or car companies. If they mismanaged – they deserve their faith.

Although I object to the concept of taxpayers bailing out anything, I think GM should get bailed out because our stupid-ass illustrious leaders bail out everything else. Examples:

1) Lenders make bad loans, and the Fed gov bails them out.
2) People get themselves into to much debt, and the Fed gov bails them out.
3) People don’t buy adequate homeowners insurance in New Orleans, and the Fed gov bails them out.
4) Bear Sterns can’t manage investments, and the Fed gov bails them out.
5) People don’t go get a job, and the Fed gov bails them out (welfare).
6) Losers pop out more kids than they can pay for, and the Fed gov bails them out.
7) etc.

Everyone of those is a bad management decision, be it business or personal. Why should GM be exempt?

Bailing out Bear Sterns, FreddieMac, and FannieMae are/were necessary because the alternative would have been a complete collapse of the U.S. economy that would have dwarfed the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Many people don’t realize how close we’ve come to a total market failure.
GM, on the other hand, can still pull their act together. Even if they were to go completely insolvent (which is highly unlikely), they’d have enough value in their assets to sell off that could sustain the economy. Even declaring bancruptcy wouldn’t be so bad, as it would let them renegotiate a lot of bad deals which have been bleeding them for decades (primarily unions and dealerships).
Another issue is politics. GM is the biggest employer of union labor, which has never been a Republican base. He’s not gaining any votes by bailing out GM, and if anything breaking unions would not be so bad in the standard Republican worldview.

The reason GM destroyed the EV1s instead of selling them is because they would have become a nightmare to service and provide things like replacement parts for the future. When a manufacturer ends production of a vehicle, they continue to build spare components for said vehicles for YEARS.

GM built the EV1s as a pilot program to test the technologies as they were developed at the time. It was an R&D effort mostly, which has most likely led to GM’s industry leadership in Li-ION battery technology and hydrogen powertrains. GM’s got the most advanced program out there. GM should be lauded for the effort. Why isn’t anyone complaining about Honda dropping its EV Plus?

Uh, the government just bailed out Bear Stearns, so Bush just contradicted himself. GM employs a helluva lot more people and is far more important to the U.S. economy than Bear Stearns is. Proof that Bush is an idiot. And I’m a republican saying this.

US government did NOT bailed out Sterns. It brokered a deal for a public institution (JP Morgan) to do so. I have no objection of Toyota buying out GM with government guarantees of about 1cent on a dollar.

Actually.. Righe!… GM borrowed those hybrid engines and I believe it was from Honda… a copy they have borrowed engines from before, i.e. the previous edition 240hp Saturn Vue Redline used the V6 Honda Accord engine.

The Focus isn’t a best-seller at all. The Corolla and Civic sell at about twice the rate. Even the Cobalt does better.

GM sells more full-size pickups on one platform than Ford sells on two. The only reason Ford can claim “best selling” is because of its marketing.

The best-selling full-size SUV is the Chevy Tahoe (not to mention the fact that the Yukon is the same thing, so GM sells twice the large SUVs that Ford does). The best-selling full-size sedan is the Chevy Impala (how’s the Taurus selling, btw?). The best-selling full-size luxury SUV is the Escalade (how’s the Navigator doing?). The best-selling full-size CUV is the GMC Acadia (how is that Taurus X doing?). And I think the Aveo is still the best-selling subcompact.

The Cobalt is outselling the Focus. The Malibu is right with the Fusion. The G6 outsells the Milan by a factor of 4 to 1. Hell, the even Aura outsells the Milan by about 75%. The Impala outsells the Taurus and Crown Vic put together by a factor of 3 to 1. The Acadia outsells the Taurus X by a factor of 3 to 1. The Outlook outsells the Taurus X, too. Cadillac sells double the number of CTS’s that Lincoln does MKZs. The LaCrosse outsells the Sable MKZ put together, too. The Lucerne outsells the Sable and Grand Marquis put together. The Buick sells more Enclaves than Lincoln does MKXs. The Trailblazer/Envoy twins outsell the Explorer/Mountaineer twins. The Colorado/Canyon twins outsell the Ranger/B-Series twins. The Escalade outsells the Navigator 2.5 to 1. The EXT outsells the Mark LT by 2 to 1. Chevy’s selling twice the Tahoes that Ford is selling Expeditions. Throw in the Suburban (because Ford now offers a competitor), and it’s 3 to 1. Throw in the Yukon/XL and it becomes nearly 5 to 1. The DTS outsells the Town Car by 3 to 1.

The Escape/Mariner/Tribute may outsell the Equinox/Torrent/Vue, but not by much (about 5%). If we’re aiming the GM Thetas against the Edge, GM’s CUVs outsell it by about 50%. And the F-Series, with its two very different platforms, may outsell the Silverado (by about 14%). But throw in the Avalanche and they’re almost even. And throw in the Sierra on top of that and GM sells 27% more full-size trucks overall, and they’re all on the same platform.

The ONLY areas in which Ford outsells GM unequivocally are the aforementioned Escape/Mariner/Tribute triplets and the E-Series vans v. the Express/Savana. That’s it.

So sit down and shut up because GM has more best-sellers than you do and outsells you in almost every single category in which you both offer a vehicle.

And GM will be busy making more money on their full-size trucks than Ford does, because they sell more, and because they only have to pay for one set of tooling for the one platform they’re on, rather than two sets of tooling for the “F-Series”.

I don’t think so. I’ve seen quite a few other long, drawn out threads in here as well. However, one of the things I see in common with the two threads that were previously obliterated is that they both were in the “[Spied]” category. When the “[Spied again]” version of each was created, all our posts vanished without a trace. I don’t think this thread will go anywhere.
