Yes, with all vehicles after a certain year the brake must be held to shift from park to any other gear. In a roll-through car wash the car is in neutral so in theory you could start the engine and go directly to drive without any contact with the brake pedal. It does sound like driver error but you have to wonder why it seems to be a specific model. If you pay attention to what you are doing a car won't hurt you. But if you operate like unsafely it will allow you to kill yourself!

I have a 2005 Grand Cherokee this so called "unintended acceleration" sounds like a bunch of bull. I have had zero incedents that can even come close to "unintended acceleration". Cars dont spontaniously accelerate, they accelerate when you have your foot on the gas pedal. People are just stupid.

I can understand making the mistake of accidentally stepping on the accelerator and taking off when the car is in drive, but if the car is in park, you have to have your foot on the brake in order to shift into drive. And how many people use their left foot to keep the brake pedal down? Hence, the person's right foot would NOT be on the acclerator during one of these unintended acclerations, leading to the credibility of the accusation. Just my 2 cents

"several reports of Jeep Grand Cherokees suddenly accelerating out of car washes"

Maybe Jeep really wants to maintain its off-road image strong by keeping them dirty?

"a severe structural flaw"

friggin retards
if they think the cause of this is a structural issue of the car they are half wits and should not be alowed to talk.

^^^^^ agreed with all but the part about "Lots of Grand Cherokees out there and lots of idiots driving them" You could have inserted any make/model in there had you wanted to.

see, you put your foot on the brake before changing from neutral to drive.

do you think mandatory EESC/ESP/ETC. are going to help alleviate, or cause more electronic glitches?

If your foot is on the brake pedal and actually pressing it firmly, then the car will not go anywhere.

I'm still going with driver error.

Lots of Grand Cherokees out there and lots of idiots driving them.

I witnessed an unintended accelleration incident a few months ago. The driver swore up and down that she was on the brake. She was just leaving the drive-thru teller at her bank. She crashed through a fence, hit a house and bounced off three cars. She finally came to rest after she t-boned a parked car. The wheels were still spinning and smoking like a top fuel dragster for about 15 seconds. It is a friggin miracle no one was killed.

She was on the accellerator the whole time.
