Haldex partners with Hyundai to develop AWD system

11/26/2007, 12:45 PM

By Drew Johnson

Haldex — the Swedish company that currently supplies the all-wheel drive systems for Volkswagen, Land Rover, Volvo and, in the near future, Saab – announced last week that it has received a prototype order from Hyundai.

According to TradingMarkets.com, the order was for a prototype installation of an all-wheel drive system based on the company’s fourth generation Limited Slip Coupling system and Haldex’s electronic Limited Slip Differential — dubbed XWD.

No word on what model will debut with the all-wheel drive system — or when — but a large sedan or crossover seems likely.

Hyundai is really pushing the r&d on new models. I think it’s great… although how great these cars will be remains to be seen. I have high hopes for them though.

It seems almost everyone looks to Haldex to start the AWD systems on their vehicles. Ford used this also, but quickly came up with their own AWD system.

Hmm…maybe the redesign of the Tucson will incorporate this new AWD system? Interesting times ahead…

I admire Hyundai audacity. They started with crappy cars and then hired Italian design studios to improve looks, improved quality and now partnering with top tier AWD system manufacturer to improve their offering.

Decent looks, reliable, respected suppliers, safety, cheap price… the only thing missing is ego boost, which is why people still buy japs and domestics.

Hyundai is not focusisng on its past, but instead its future, which is what we all should be doing…

Look at people like Skoda who have shed their stigma to come up with some great cars that sell well.

Still remember when the Fabia vRS (diesel powered) beat a mini cooper (petrol) around a track on top gear!

Commodore: I was thinking the same at first but it almost sounds like this Haldex corp actually developed the XWD system. So they might own the rights to this system and the name. So the 08/09 Saab 9-3 Turbo X with XWD is probably this Haldex Corp’s AWD system.
