Whoa...I wasn't defending the UAW workers (they are grossly overpaid & mostly underworked), I was trying to point out that this whole situation is screwing up the economies of the Midwest right now--for everyone, not just these people. Who knows what these people will do once they're out of a job, but as a taxpayer, I sure as hell don't want them sitting around on welfare sucking up all the tax money that could be MUCH better spent on other things. I'd love to see them be re-trained & contribute to the economy again, but watching the politicians in action is scary. No one seems to have a good plan on how to deal with all of this, and as for these people leaving the state...maybe, but the housing market is bad right now, so they'll be lucky to sell their houses let alone make any money off them. And even if they do leave, most of them still don't have any skills so what's the point? And what about the people who are more vocationally vs. academically inclined? Not everyone is cut out to be a college student. You can provide all the money in the world, but if the person can't pass the classes & get the degree, then what?

As for DeVos vs. Granholm, it's a choice of the lesser of the evils. You pick the one who you think will do the least damage & maybe, just maybe, do something good for the state. DeVos was worse than Granholm in the debates because his "plan" was to continually point out that Granholm didn't deliver on her campaign promises over the last four years. Big deal. He never told anyone what he planned to do any different. In short, I'm not blaming Granholm for the problem, but it'd be nice if she would focus more effort on bringing businesses to the state (i.e. job creation) vs. her free health care for all b.s.

Hey 90Z, I don"t know about in America but in Canada these people that work at the auto plants Domestic or foreign are being paid a pretty penny to do what they do. They make more than the skilled worker with a trade or etc... I'm sure that they all recieved a very comfortable buy out. I say F*@K EM , they can retrain themselves with their own cash not on our coin. If they didn't invest any of it and squanderd most of it to F*@kin Bad. Lesson learned. Cheers.

90Z...she does not have to train the displaced workers....Ford is providing the money for them to do that. The question will be whether they stick around the state to work here, or move on to other areas of the country. As the auto-business goes, so goes the state of Michigan. You can blame it on Granholm all you want, but what does that say when Devos could not even beat her. If the auto business gets healthy, whoever is Governer rides those wings....a Michigan exclusive.

I believe Chevy advertises even more to the homosexual community. They just were not the targets of the Family Association that made them a target. That group is a wacko joke!!

So...will Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm be able to re-train these displaced workers as she has promised? Her big plan (according to the pre-election debates) is to have local community colleges/universities work with these people so that they could obtain a degree & find another job. The Michigan economy is tanking, though, and she's done little to create new jobs and/or bring more large companies to Michigan, so what happens when these people have a new degree & no job opportunities? Oh yeah...I forgot about her short term solution: pull ahead 10 years' worth of construction projects into the next three years to create jobs. I'm sure these people will be thrilled to be working the road patching crews or be the person standing in the middle of the road directing traffic and flipping the sign back & forth between STOP and SLOW.

ZMan- Yeah, I heard that. They're betting the farm on their multi-billion dollar turnaround loan. Let's just hope it's a sign of confidence and not desperation.

Well done to ford. Now the soaring cost of health care to the workers will be halfed and the money which has been saved could go towards paying back the finance company with whom they have taken a loan. Hope they get through this

I just learned this week that FORD has borrowed a huge amount of coin, in the billions. For the first time in their 103 year history, I heard that thyey put up assets as security for this loan. That is not a good sign, but they are like the other two of the big three here they too are restructuring. Has anybody else heard of this news recently.

Scott. I do not think it was tough working for Ford. I think it was tough having Ford employ so many people. The workers were paid fair, so they are leaving a good job. Ford just made the buyout very attractive.

Wow----half! I can't say that I blame them though. It's gotta be tough working for Ford these days. I'd be curious to know the details of those offers.

I don't envy the managers who are sticking around, trying to make do with half the people they used to have.
