The BBC has released images of the famous high-speed crash involving Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond. Mr. Hammond crashed a jet-powered dragster at 288 mph while filming for the popular automotive show in September.
“I will have taken a few deep breaths on the start line as the engine roared and my thumb hovered over the afterburner switch,” he told Top Gear magazine.
“Then I will have hit it and 10,000 horsepower will have hurled me towards the horizon and up to 280mph. The rest is, I’m afraid, history,” he added. [Crash image | Wreckage].

Oh man that was vicious. While he didn’t “walk away” he certainly is lucky. They would have had to hose my fat corpse out of the thing. Pick the rest up with spatulas and shovels. Messy.

Piston powered top fuel rails do more than 280mph in the 1/4 mile.
This thing wasn’t anything special if it could’t do more than 280 with a jet engine.

Lucky SOB. He is a great person in the automobile world, and I am glad he made it through this. I don’t recall, but was there any reason given for the crash? (i.e. driver error or malfunction of the car?)

For the speed the car was traveling at it sure turned pretty sharply into the field. You would imagine at 280mph it would just keep going straight. Im alittle confused.

I am curious of the construction of the car. Most dragsters and almost any open wheeled race car will shed every bit except for the ****pit shell to absorb impact energy while protecting the driver. Even the Enzo will shed structure, by design, to protect occupants. This car seems amazingly whole for such a crash. that tells me that a great amount of energy was absorbed by the remaining structure, in which the tightly belted Mr. Hammond was seated. I dont know enough to say the design of the car was flawed, but judging from the eyes of a layman, I’d say poor design could possibly of contributed to the seriousness of his injuries.
IMVHO.

^Maybe he is in a corner crying because Toyota is about to become the largest automaker in the world and kick GM from their overstayed position.

Hamster is the best of the three on the show as he has the most balance about his opinions and findings…without him there is no show. TopGear is by far the best automotive show on television.

Yay! Glad the show is ready to start up again. I really hope the “Old Firm” as Jeremy called it, is truly back. One thing for sure, next time they try a crazy stunt, Hamster’s accident will always be a lingering thought…

It’s obvious the ability of people from that show to objectively critique motor vehicles is rivaled only by their driving skill. They are equally adept at both.

BAMF, it WAS caused by a tire blowout. And Topgearsucks……..SHUT UP!!! If you don’t like the show, then why are you posting on this story for?! We are fans of Hammond, and we have wished him well in his recovery, so if you hate him so much, then F*** OFF!!

That show is just a hatchet job on anything automotive from America. I have a 37 YO “horrible” American car in my collection that I can easily sell for 5 times what I have invested in it and 15 times it’s original purchase price (and for even more overseas), while anything European of the same vintage is MIA around here. Why is that? Because they have long ago passed through the car crusher and are part of a new Kia Rio somewhere (if there was even anything left worth melting down) Watch the Barret-Jackson car auctions sometime and see what people here desire and pay top dollar for. That might be difficult for you though, with your head stuck so far up your anus.
