Texas-based tuner John Hennessey stands behind his claims and has recently arranged to take his latest creation, the VR1200 on a top speed run. The 1,226-horsepower coupe managed an impressive 220.5mph before running out of straightaway.
Test driver Brian Smith piloted the car to the velocity on a stretch of a brand new toll road, SH130. The feat was done with the permission and supervision of the Texas Departments of Transportation and Public Safety as well as the local police force. The run took place earlier this week, on October 23. Hennessey claims a top speed of 242mph for the VR1200.
To recap, the VR1200 gets a twin-turbo, 7.0-liter V8 that makes 1,226 horsepower and 1,109lb-ft of torque. The VR1200 is priced at $295,000.
Hennessey made good use of the day, as it also took its Hennessey HPE700 ZL1 Camaro to a 203.9mph run over the same stretch. That's very impressive, considering the car makes more than 500 horsepower less than the VR1200, at 707. Both speeds were recorded using the Vbox timing system that uses GPS technology. The piece of road that Hennessey calls the fastest highway in America is located near Austin, Texas. The official speed limit is 85mph.
