High-performance Camaro, Corvette models safe despite death of HPVO

02/20/2009, 4:17 PM

By Drew Johnson

General Motors recently announced that it has killed its High Performance Vehicle Operations, but that doesn’t necessarily spell the end of performance-minded GM vehicles. In fact, a number of GM performance vehicles could completely sidestep the ax.

GM spokesman Vince Muniga revealed to Edmunds that a number of GM vehicles won’t be affected by the death of HPVO. Cars like the Chevrolet Camaro SS, Corvette ZR1 and Z06 were actually engineered as standard vehicles, with no affiliation whatsoever to GM’s HPVO.

“Camaro SS, Corvette ZR1 and Corvette Z06 are all regularly engineered cars,” Muniga told Edmunds. “They did not go through HPVO. Most people did not realize that. They are safe.”

However, Cadillac’s V-Series cars and other high-performance models – such as the Chevrolet Cobalt SS and HHR SS and Pontiac G8 GXP – were developed through HPOV. Those vehicles will continue as planned for the time being, but likely won’t be replaced after their current lifecycle is up.

But all hope might not be lost as Muniga compared GM’s HPOV to Ford’s SVT. Ford’s Special Vehicle Team stopped production in 2004, but has reformed to create the Ford Raptor. “This is an indefinite hiatus,” he added.

No LSA powered Z/28 though. Says Motor Trend, they are like 95% with that car, but apparently it’s not going to happen.

zfenderguy – I think that when released it’s gonna go something like this:

- Camaro
- Camaro RS
- Camaro SS
- Camaro Z28
- Camaro SS/RS

I can’t remember the exact order, but I know there is 4 or 5 models that it will come in. Could someone who know for sure help me out here.

Thats why we have companies like Mallett. They’ve been doing obscene things to CTS’s, Solstices, and Sky’s. When there is a market, the people will buy.

of course they can’t stop high performance versions of the corvette, they don’t have control of the corvette’s performance because they could leave if they wanted to. Ever wonder why there are no Chevy symbols on a corvette…

i was reading just yesterday, in the newspaper, about Corvette leaving for lotus if they stopped coming out with better models in the future. i never knew it before and never took the time to learn about it. i guess someone from lotus from way back when lotus was with gm, was also part creator of the corvette or something. I’m sure some corvette fans could key in on this if there are some on this forum.

To me, it almost sounds like they haven’t stopped “higher” performance Camaros in the future. The SS is like a GT Mustang, while a higher performing Z28 package, or whatever they’d call it, could be out still with the Corvette’s hipo Z06 engine inside to compete with the Shelby GT500.

Just a thought…

Which is exactly what I said we would hear soon from GM yesterday. You’re welcome.

If GM will keep coming to Uncle Sam for stipend, forget about those cars. Congress and President stated that they want electric cars, not muscle cars.

how hard is it for GM to “normally engineer” the 2.0 turbo ecotec into the next cobalt?

and actually there are chevy logos on a Corvette, within the corvette logo itself.

So much for any hope of GM competing in the sport compact market of the near future. They finally got the formula right with the Cobalt SS and now they are going to let it die. Modest size, outstanding power, stellar handling, and 30+MPG. What’s not to love?

Mazda already has a next-gen Speed3 prototype, VW’s GTi is still out there, and we all know the Civic Si will remain a staple in Honda’s lineup.

Domestic auto supporters wonder why everyone buys imports… well, here’s another reason.

Also of note… I believe the 2.0 turbo ecotec “LNF” will not be making future appearances because it is designed and manufactured by Saab. If Saab bites the dust GM will lose that engine.

RaineMan,

They helped design it, they don’t produce it. They can have that engine for another 100 years if they want to. GM owns the rights to the engine forever. Trust me, anything they can get from SAAB they will keep and use, they need to show they got something in their investment.

What’s not to love is the horrible Cobalt interior. The Cobalt’s interior isn’t acceptable for a rental car, let alone be mentioned along with the great interiors of Civic and GTI. Performance isn’t everything, otherwise why not go out and buy a used Neon SRT-4?

It’s the early ’80s all over again w/GM making performance versions of their cars with the use of scoops and stickers.

Like the Chevy Citation X-11.

Stupid. Plain and stupid. They could sell a Chevy Cruz SS w/their turbo Ecotec, but nope.

How lame.

idrinorbarsaku, I think there would be a huge backlash if Corvette was sold to another company. It would be tantamount to Coke changing its flavor. There are some things that you just don’t mess with in American culture, and I’d think you’d agree that the Vette is one of them.

JakeK66… buy a used SRT-4? Good luck finding one, and you are going to pay top dollar for it if you do. Those cars have great resale value, especially the late model ones.

And what’s not to like about Cobalt’s interior, especially the SS? Steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, heated leather seats that are both comfortable and very supportive, a 7-speaker Pioneer audio system with trunk mounted 10″ sub, a decent shifter that doesn’t flop around, a couple of cup holders, A-pillar mounted boost gauge. What else do you need? Remember, this is an amped-up econobox… not some super plush cruiser. Get in and drive it like you stole it. As long as everything is in the right place and works when you need it why complain?

the problem with the cobalt’s interior is that with a base msrp of 23.5k w/o delivery (optioned out at 26k) you’re paying GTI money for a car with an old crappy econobox interior…that, for a lot of people, is unacceptable…maybe not for you, personally, but from my perspective i’m willing to give up a few tenths of 0-60 time for a higher quality interior and more utility, given the price is equivalent…
