Holden Coupe 60 Concept revealed

Holden took the wraps off a new concept car today called the Coupe 60. Essentially a two-door version of the VE Commodore, the car could easily be put into production, but GM insists there are no firm plans just yet. Although the Holden brand only exists in Australia, the Commodore sedan is imported to America as the Pontiac G8, which opens the door to obvious that a the Coupe 60 could eventually come here as well.

“This is a vehicle I know our designers would dearly love to see go into production, but for the moment it has to remain a concept only,” GM Holden Chairman and Managing Director Mark Reuss said.

Over two inches shorter than the Commodore, the coupe rides on 21-inch wheels and is powered by a 6.0 litre V8 engine with E85 ethanol fuel compatibility.

Like the Cadillac CTS Coupe — another two-door coupe concept from GM — the Coupe 60 has a pillarless design, meaning there is no structural B-pillar between the front side and rear side windows.

  2. oh other than that, kinda reminds me of the body lines of the nissan gtr…

  3. the body kit is too much, and the rear taillights remind me of the acura tl.

the interior is nice but the “gauge cluster” makes me want to vomit.

i like elements of it, but too many things detract from what would otherwise be a clean holden design.

  6. we’ll probably not even get to see it in America thanks to our new CAFE. State of CA is now proposing 44 MPG by 2020.

I think the overall lines are flawless and that will no doubt remain. All the body kits and tail lights are no doubt just for show. I think it will look incredible in production trim.

  7. This a no brainer. Build it right now, slap on the twin kidney grilles up front and call it a 2010 Pontiac Firebird!

  10. Also, I like this way, way better than the CTS Coupe. This thing looks like a big, muscular coupe. With the CTS Coupe I kinda felt like Cadillac was trying to conceal a sedan under a coupe.

  11. This likely will become the next Monaro in Australia, which… was what the previous GTO was rebadged from. Considering the Commodore is here with revisions as the G8 sedan, and supposedly the G8 “ute” is to be shown here soon with anouncement for public sale (according to both Motor Trend and now AutoWeek) it’d not surprise me if GM didn’t consider bringing this here too.

Then again, considering GM’s flipping out about CAFE standards and flip-flopping as to the future of Zeta in use in the U.S. (the Impala was, then wasn’t, then was, then wasn’t…), who knows what they’re going to do. I still think it’d be a mistake not to make greater use of it (although GM should be working on looking at Hybrid, E85 Flexfuel, cylinder-deactivation, turbo-V6, and Diesel variants for every car to find the best fit… time to bust open the VM Motori alliance s’more and license BluTec from Daimler), but then again… I thought the Monaro would be hugely successful here too and it wasn’t. Then again, I think people’s tastes shifted and the rounded shape of the Monaro became outdated overnight due to the rounded soap bar approach of the various Chrysler’s shown. In fact, the Australian performance models looked far meaner than the GTO which didn’t have the body kit or nose detailings of the Monaro down under. That said, the Magnum is now dead so even the blocky theme can jump the shark pretty quickly apparently if you peg the product niche with nothing more to give.

I really think, in the end, automakers need to get used to quicker turnaround and product refreshing. To me, some of the past cars by the Big 3 were successes if taken on a 3-4 year development cycle (akin to the Asians) but GM has had more than an inkling to milk a car design for up to 12 years and expect it to sell as well at age 12 as at age 1. I’d heard that most automakers expected to sell more vehicles within the same niches. GM is doing that with Lambda and the problem there is the oversaturation of that one product and the cross-shopping within the brands for almost the same product…. once it’s sold out and people move on to something else, the product just sits there and languishes to the point GM writes it off as a failure when the reality is… they missed the boat and didn’t follow-up quickly enough. With the economy sort of in flux, esp. with regards to large purchases… just about any car is going to have to really make a case for volume sales anymore, I wouldn’t count on it with exception to pick-ups and mainstream sedans and even that is a question. To me, that might mean one product platform gets sold in more variants with the variants rotated in/out regularly.

I say, bust out this coupe… let it roll for 4 years, then roll out something else on a further evolution of Zeta. We have the Ute and Sedan and the Camaro, give the G8 coupe… then maybe phase out the coupe and/or ute, bring out a convertible based on the coupe with different styling. Maybe roll out a completely redesigned coupe in 4 years, whether ground up or a huge cosmetic makeover to spice it up. Would it cost $? Undoubtedly… but so does putting products on dealership lots when it’s not selling and you have to rely on incentives for over half of a product’s run to get it off the showroom floor.

  12. Why do all the American companies sell all of their ****ty cars in the United States while their Europe and Asia get their good looking quality cars? This concept has the nicest interior of any American car in a long time. GM should ditch Pontiac and add Holden to the United States. GM, make this car exactly as it is.

  13. nice. no doubt Aussie Gm’s smoke there US counterparts. but for some reason when you put a Pontiac grill on it its not as cool. first complaint about GTO was styling, but it was pretty identical to the Aussie version? wierd.

Same with Ford Europe and Aus making better cars than Ford US…

Are we seeing a pattern here America?!

  19. So this is the Australian Camaro. It’d make a nice G8 coupe, just don’t go attaching the Firebird’s name to a vehicle that isn’t what a Firebird should be.

  20. This car is beautiful! Too bad they would put the Pontiac grill on it, if they were to ever make it and bring it to NA.

  21. WOW! This is bad ass! I love it! Lucky Aussies. Even if we don’t get it I hope they at least do! Pontiac is really missing out on a performance coupe. (I don’t consider the G6 GXP or Solstice GXP to be) Since they are already importing the Commodore as the G8 and this now doubt is being built off the new Zeta Chassis if Pontiac did this then I’d say there is still hope.
    1. G8 sedan with the base, GT, and GXP trims
    2. G8 ST (UTE) with a GT, and possibly GXP trims
    3. G8 Coupe with GT and GXP badges.

That would spell success for Pontiac!

  30. GM - if you must bring it as a Pontiac, please do this:
Black out the center divider in the typical grill and let the badge “float” in the middle.
    There - bring it on.

  31. this would be the perfect top of the line pontiac, whatever the name. the question is, how many years will it take to see it happen. aside from the g6, the division is in a free fall. they need this car now…

Comment by murphy1, posted on February29 at 1:16 pm
  32. Now this is the kind of Zeta based product that Pontiac needs to follow up the G8 sedan, instead of a rebadged Holden Ute trucklet. If this vehicle is approved for production (GM would be extremely foolish not to) and if GM is really serious about revitalizing the Pontiac division, then they will make this car a part of Pontiac’s lineup.

  34. SewerScum4LIFE yeah in your dreams buddy-800 HP my ass.

    There is no such thing.
The best GM can muster for a Corvette is the Blue Devil Corvette and its not even out yet and that’s gonna be rated for 620 HP- I think my 600 Strong Mustang Horses can easily hold its own against the BD -Corvette. If that is not enough we can always go to the 787 Horsepower top of the Line Mustang/Super Snake from Shelby- that should take care of you for good!!!

You’ll be in my rear view mirror constantly as a little dot - that is until I pull out of sight lol lamo.

  36. golf4me, keep in mind that the body kit on this wouldn’t make it to production which would tone it down some.

Comment by dodgeyaussie, posted on March1 at 1:02 am
  37. As good looking and popular as it may be, it is unlikely to ever see production since GMH plan on selling the Camaro in Australia and a Monaro would cannibalize sales.

Heart 64, an 800hp vette would almost certainly blow away a 787hp mustang, let alone one wiht 600hp.

Comment by meekin111, posted on March1 at 6:26 am
  38. Um that’s incorrect MeekLoser. There is no such thing as an 800 HP Corvette only in your delusional mind perhaps, but not in reality. Get a grip visit http://www.shelbyautos.com/gt-h.asp And you’ll shut up real fast! hahahaha

The Mustang does exist at 787 Horsepower rating. So the closeset Chevy comes that is the 620 HP Blue Devil- ok you can tune it up a bit and make it 650 still your a 100 Horsepower shy. Get use to seeing my tail lights and nothing but Punk!

  39. Heart64, a 800hp Vette WILL blow away a 787hp Mustang. Vettes are lighter than Mustangs. I love how you said that Corvette can “only” muster 620hp. AT LEAST THAT’S FROM THE GM FACTORY YOU DUMBASS. I clicked on your link and all I did was laugh.

As for your “no Vette with more than 620hp exists” claim you might want to check this out.

LPE happens to be the undisputed champon of tuners anywhere.

  42. C6Racer your a complete idiot. This Felt-him-selfter sham outfit you claim as legitimate chevy aftermarket car builder is nothing more than a country cow-poke grabbing whatever off the self parts he can find and slapps them together like a P-O-S on the motor and calls it legit.

Well Lose-In-Felter has to be around for over 4 decades to qualify and have a legitimate build shop and hire real mechanics and technicians to put things together like Carrol Shelby does!

Yeah Lump-Of-Crap-In-Felter has got a long way to go to prove himself.
His antiquated creation has no warranty, and I’d be willing to bet it not only deestroys the tranny within the first hour of that junk-piles operation along with a blown chevy motor to boot! Its a Barn-Yard-Operation alright. hey just shove the Cow manure off to the side and off the table and role out the blue prints where their was manure 5 minutes before. Yeah I’m real impressed.

Now that you’ve been put in your place you can shut up now offically. You’ll realize Ford is truely Found-On the-Road-to Domination over Porsche! Chevy Who?

Comment by Heart64, posted on March2 at 1:21 am
  43. Sorry kid. LPE is proven. Deal with it. Besides, I wasn’t talking crap about Shelby. I just proved Vettes do exist all the way up to 1,300hp for the street.

You wanna crap about a tuner look up Hennessey.

  44. I like this……a LOT. Sweet!

Comment by gbb, posted on March2 at 11:17 am
  45. Hahahaha that is hilarious CR. I mean it was a complete joke you mentioning a garbage 800 HP from a completely non-professional builder like Lump-of-Crap and now your claiming much higher hahaha that is very funny.

No Hennessey is a legitmate automotive builder too, but I don’t need to go in that direction with you. Even though they have Legit cars that would easily handle your pathetic vette. So i guess that is why you decided to pull out inflated HP rating. Good you we know your lying hahaha.

Well you think you’ve got me figured out don’t you hahahaha.Lamo. Listen all I have to do is put in an order to Carrol Shelby and he could easily tune the Mustang to 2,000 HP so top that girl.

    Oh Yeah! Another Battle Won!
