Earlier, we told you GM’s Holden subsidiary announced plans to produce a fuel-efficient small car based on the Chevrolet Cruze. The automaker has since released a heavily stylized teaser sketch of how the car will look. Holden says the new small car will be built using the Australian government’s $4 billion industry bailout and that it will offer a choice of four-cylinder gas or diesel powertrains.
Holden says the car will consume about 20 percent less fuel than the Commodore, which is sold in North America as the Pontiac G8.
The Australian automaker will build the four-cylinder, Cruze-based sedan alongside the Commodore in Adelaide. GM will build the Cruze – and related variants – in at least five facilities across the world, including an Ohio plant for North American vehicles.
The Cruze-based Holden will replace the Epica in the automaker’s lineup. The Epica, sold as a Chevrolet and Daewoo in certain markets, was designed and engineered by GM Daewoo in South Korea.
