It’s one of the oldest plots in Hollywood: boy meets girl, they fall in love, something happens to drive them apart but they ultimately realize how much they need each other and get back together. Apparently, General Motors and Big Oil have been watching a lot of movies lately. Less than a week after GM announced it was breaking up with Big Oil, it looks like to two sides have reconciled and are happily back together.
GM originally planned to air a commercial that contained the lines “Dear Oil, We’ve had this great relationship for many years. We think we will both be a lot happier and healthier if we see less of each other” during NBC’s “Meet the Press†on June 22, but the auto giant says it hasn’t made an official decision to run the ad.

“It’s one spot, and it’s not in its final creative treatment yet,” GM spokeswoman Kelly Cusinato told Automotive News. “We don’t know if we’re going to run it.” Cusinato added that GM’s marketing directed jumped the gun by announcing when the spot would air.

Cusinato said GM is reconsidering the ad campaign because people might think that the ads are directly targeting Big Oil. In reality, the ads are intended to “break up†with oil as a source of energy.
