NEW FUTURE MARKET
  • Honda considering four-door Accord coupe?

    By Andrew Ganz

If a report is to believed, Honda is apparently working on a four-door “coupe-style” version of its mainstream Accord sedan. Designed in the vein of the Volkswagen CC – which itself was modeled after the Mercedes-Benz CLS – the Accord four-door coupe could make it to North America badged as an Acura.
Auto und Motor Sport reports that the four-door coupe will be based on the European-market Accord (sold in North America as the Acura TSX). Given that the North American Accord is a larger mainstream sedan, the more upscale, style-oriented model believed to be under development would take an Acura badge.

The design could be based on the Acura ZDX concept car that was unveiled earlier this year in New York.

More sweeping and stylish in its proportions, the four-door coupe would trade the traditional sedan’s practicality for a low, coupe-like roofline and probably a more dramatic interior. Its North American arrival could coincide with the rumored TSX Type S high-performance sedan.

Likely powered by the same 2.4-liter four-cylinder that sees duty in the TSX, the shapely Accord coupe would also offer the 2.3-liter, 260-horsepower turbo four and a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox expected to arrive in the TSX Type S. A North American variant could also be powered by the same V6 in the recently-introduced TSX V6.

A “four-door coupe”? You mean a sedan, beacuse that is what a “four-door coupe” is.

God dämmit, if its got 4 doors, its a sedan. I don’t care about how many cubic feet of interior volume there is, and neither does anybody else.

How about Honda consider building a car again that is fun to drive and isn’t äss-ugly. They haven’t done that in maybe 15 years.

Actually, current Accord isn’t bad. I personally like it looks and it is not a bad ride, considering size/dimensions and practicality. And if you can find tester on dealer lot with manual (not an easy task) it is outright competition for A6 even with 4 cylinders.

Im getting tired of these “4 door Coupe” things. I think that Honda needs to concentrate on
-Making a new Civic bc the Mazda 3 and the Kia Forte are looking great
-Offer VTM4 wheel drive on the Accord (in limited numbers)
-Get rid of the base model TL and let the V6 TSX take over the slot, Maybe even offer SH AWD and possibly a hybrid version
-Work on a new rear drive based SH AWD RL for Acura

On the subject of 4 door coupe: it is a misnomer or marketing gimmick. Seems to work for VW so everybody is jumping on the success wagon. This shall pass.

Many ideas have achieved life by simply resorting to the old tried and true method of throwing the metaphorical lump of fecal matter against the wall to see if it sticks. The four door coupe would in this case be representative of said lump. And I for one am at least grateful the resultant products are not two and a half ton quasi SUV luxo barges with the interior volume of a subcompact masquerading as some kind of perverted lifestyle choice while doing nothing more than hauling one passenger, their blackberry and briefcase. It is sad however that not only will that concept probably also stick but we’ll end up having to fix the hole in the wall as well.

The design languages of the current Accord and all Acura products do not lend themselves to the sleek looks of a “4dr coupe”. Since I don’t see Honda changing their design language any time soon, this is likely to be one horrible mess of lines, creases and curves.

Not that they make anything is is good looking, but this could be a real disaster…

I cant wait for this mess to be on the roads…who in this world needs a dressed up accord for a premium price ? obviously there r many who dont care for the looks nor the performance than premium brandish (?) 30mpg 4 banger….I cant see how these 4 cyl are getting into the premium market..holy crap.

This “4-door coupe” trend is interesting. Only the Merc CLS and the VW Passat coupe have done it right. The Rapide will also look fantastic, though I think the Porsche Panamera will suffer in the design department (pregnant 911). Honda needs to go back to its roots. The current design is too busy, bulging headlights, too much chrome, basically amounts to slapping Nike Shox soles onto wingtips. Bring back design elements from the last generation Prelude and clean things up.

mayer_ray_nagin- Despite disagreeing with you all the time, I have to say that’s EXACTLY what everyone should want from Honda. And Toyota for that matter. The S2K may have been fun to drive, but they need something affordable, to go back to the CRX and stuff like that. Affordable fun.

Real Honda fans know that they’re going in the wrong direction. Lousy Honda fans like 1115 who praise what they do now have no idea what Honda should be doing.

I do agree that technically, 4 door coupe is an oxymoron. I will say that the MB CLS and VW Passat CC are really interesting to look at and it people want to buyt them, then let them. I don’t mind looking at them on the road. I am surprised that Honda would release this is a Honda first and not an Acura.

‘shane’, you fool, outside of politics ‘mayer’ most often nails it … you NEVER nail it … I ALWAYS nail it … you don’t matter here … FACT.

‘Borat’, the Accord is OBJECTIVELY unattractive … more FACT.

Fact: With new BMW 5 series nobody would want to buy anything else.

Woh, wait a sec. The VW CC is been so successful due to it’s rather affordable price and German nameplate making it a interesting, albeit less practical choice in the midsize sedan catagory. What Honda is thinking of is a semi-luxury car, if badged as an Acura, that would cost upwards of $35,000 to start, not quite the value leader of the CC.

I can see it, I guess, competing with the CC V-6, but to be a true CC competitor, I don’t see it at all. Especially given Honda’s, um, interesting (crappy) designs in the past couple years. I love you Honda, but I could find better designers off the street. VW has you beat when it comes to making a car look good, and stay classy on top of it.

so, while the accord sedan isn’t bad looking, its definitly not attractive, the accord coupe on he otherhand, is rather attractive i like the direction they took with it. If honda goes through with it, i hope it takes more the direction of the accord coupes stylings…it might actually work. but it would need that turbo 4 from the rdx so its not simply a guised up accord sedan. it needs somethin to separate it. and WRATH…you forgot one company that nailed the 4door coupe and that is the Lambo Estoque… polarizing, YES but its damn good looking, that cant be denied one bit.

Really, the only “4-door coupes” I’ve seen in recent years would be the RX-8 and the Ion Quad Coupe.

Everything else is just a sedan.

“Four-door coupe” isn’t an oxymoron. A coupe or sedan designation has nothing to do with the number of doors a car has.

Coupe: four structural pillars (A, B).
Sedan: six structural pillars (A, B, and C).

Hence my Accord “coupe” is a two-door sedan, and the mistake Honda is considering making here could be a four-door coupe. Granted the word “coupe” is almost universally regarded to mean “having two doors”, or (in America at least) “it looks a lot sportier than it deserves to and you should buy it.”

I agree on the “4 door coupe” crap, but I would love to see a smaller, sportier sedan with turbo 4 and 6-speed dual clutch gearbox.

    22. photo
      strongbad429 days ago

I am pretty sure a CC has an A, B, and C pillar, so its a sedan. Like someone said, suicide doors like the RX-8 is a ’4 door coupe’.

Anyway, I like the current Honda Coupe Fixed Roof Convertible.

If this information is correct then it is in fact a good news because Honda is a much reliable company than say a toyota [engine quality]. Anyway when Cadillac came up with a sporty design for CTS or CTS-V everyone drooled. So looks are a huge deciding factor on whether or not a customer will buy a car and so far honda do not have a car of that sort except maybe the Civic si mugen or the Accord coupe [little bit]. If they can build car with aggressive looks without the beak nose for Acura they sure do have a winner. People buy Honda for reliability not looks and its about time Honda needs a do it all over again sedan or coupe either from Honda or Acura. If they can do that then it is good. I also think Honda should ask their customers for feedback. Like give a design for public feedback over a time period and gather the data and make that car kind of like what Microsoft is doing with Windows 7

I applaud any car-based usage of the 2.3L turbo engine but…. there is no such thing as a “four door coupe”!

Honda already has a good looking “Accord Coupe” that is actually a *coupe* with two doors.

the current accord coupe struck me when it first came out because it actually had some style…honda has been so very bland as of late…my first car was a honda prelude…nothing special, really, but it was an easy to drive and fun car with a big fat sunroof (i’m talking about the boxy mid-80s prelude here)…so honda eventually killed off the prelude, putting out some questionably styled models along the way, and the only other car with any style to it that they’ve put out is the S2000 and that was nearly 10 years ago now…(i’m pretending acura doesn’t exist for the purposes of this comment, btw)…

the current 2 door civic looks sorta cool, in an over-angular way…but it doesn’t really grab me…the accord coupe, though, made more of a statement…it’s a big fat cruiser of a coupe, of course, but i’m interested to see the sedan version…

i’m agnostic on how you want to define a coupe, but here’s what dictionary.com has to say about it:

      “coupe
1  /kup/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [koop] Show IPA
      –noun
      1. Also, coupé. a closed, two-door car shorter than a sedan of the same model.”

      Four doors = Sedan.

Do us a favor and stop calling sedan’s “Four Door Coupes!” Any manufacturer that calls a sedan a four door coupe are only making fools of themselves.

Accord crossover…thats what they are planning. It looks like a BMW X6. 4 door coupe….Mercedes tried that and it was a failure. Honda will go slowly when it comes to bold moves. AWD crossover coming out this fall.

Another FACT … my subjective views are OBJECTIVE FACTS. Most everyone else posts subjective nonsense which I then have to correct with OBJECTIVE FACTS.

Imitation is just that … I stand alone as the final arbiter here and any monkey who even THINKS of trying to copy, imitate or somehow mimic is a jealous peasant. That’s just more FACT.

I think HONDA said “We are considering a Four door version of our much more attractive and sporty (Can’t forget sporty) Accord Coupe. Not that the Accord Sedan is ugly, but we want to sucker a few more import performance neophytes before they realize that DETROIT is the real REAL DEAL and can deliver. The Malibu and the FUSION has us just a bit nervous… just a bit…”

1115: For the first time ever, I totally agree with you. Now with all these good small cars (especially the Kia Forte) I think honda’s bread and butter car the new civic should be the car that should be focused on. I’m not sure about a SH-AWD TSX (Even with the base TL gone) because it would maybe create some in house competition, but it could work.
Back on the 4-door Accord coupe. Forget it. Enough of these stupid body styles that make no sense at all.

Too bad the “final arbiter” of LLN attended the grammar class as the LLN bloggers.

What’s wrong, Impulsive? Did the girls all make fun of you in high school when you showed up and revved the engine in your Dodge Aries 4 door coupe?
