Exposed: 2008 Honda Accord sedan spied again

July2

june2007/2008-accord.jpg

Here’s another glimpse at the 2008 Honda Accord sedan, expected to be the volume model once again. A vacationer-turned-spy photographer snapped these shots for Brenda Priddy & Co. in Cape Cod, Mass. These photos give us an even better look than last week’s photos spotted in Alberta.

From the photos, we can see the intracate alloy wheels and extensive chrome detailing in these V6 models. It’s likely that the cars were out for publicity photographs.

The cars are based closely on the concept version previewed at the Detroit auto show in January. As we’ve seen before, the coupe sports a honeycomb grille, whereas the sedan has horizontal bars. And based on the wheels and dual exhaust, these are all V6 versions.

Honda has publicly talked about more horsepower, better fuel economy, cylinder deactivation and lower emissions for the V6-powered Accord, and although there’s no official word from Honda, we’re anticipating a 3.5-liter V6 with about 270-horsepower, as well as the base 180-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder version.

  7. It looks cheaper and dumpier than almost every Accord before it. A step way back for Honda.

It lacks inspiration. I would have expected a car that looks like their latest generation FCV, that was a sharp looking ride (The front looks close though but the rest misses completely). This looks like they were trying to develop some new “up scale” details and it came out looking pretty cheeky. The big bubble dome is so “old folks” and it looks every bit like a boring FF car.

  8. Not as horrible as I expected, but certainly not a step forward in any perceptible way. The cowl has gotten higher, the cabin looks smaller and more upright.. obviously the next Acura TSX and TL variants of this platform will get the good looks.

  9. I don’t know how I feel about the back, especially from the side view, but the front looks good. Here’s a word to the wise for everyone though: reserve final judgement until you’ve seen the official unveiling, if we all judged whether cars were ugly or not based on spy shots, there wouldn’t be an attractive car out there.

  10. I agree something along the daring lines of the FCV, or even an upsized version of the Civic, would have been preferable.. but the “Sebring slash” along the side is probably the biggest gaffe of all.

  11. I see a lot of different influences here, I see a little pontiac and cadillac in the front, some nissan on the grill, a side profile that looks stolen from honda’s acura divison and the back of an audi A6

  16. It seems like Japanese companies seem to give up after they design one nice car.

Honda: “Yea, we built the S2000. We can phone the rest of our cars in for the next 10 years.”

Nissan: “Look at our sexy 350Z. Oh, and by the way, here’s our new SentrZzzzzzzzzzz….”

Toyota: “Don’t give us crap about boring cars, we made one nice-looking generation of the Celica! We think that’s enough.”

  17. Being a honda fan, I’m quite diasappointed with the bland styling. There’s no way it’ll outsell the Camry, Altima, etc. However, it will “sell enough” simply because its Honda.

  18. Headlights with the subtlety of a Dodge, tail lights look like they came from a Hyundain, door handles from a Lexus. The rear bumper is awfully sexy though! :)

  20. This is shocking unappealing. Well, not that shockingly, but Honda has made a brilliant-looking Civic. This here is nowhere close to a creation made by anyone with any intelligence.
Maybe it’s just a Hyundai or something, or the crummy Euro-version of the next Accord.

Comment by TOZO, posted on May11 at 7:00 pm
  21. What the…? I didn’t know that the US got another Accord than we have here in Europe. Sadly your models (new and current) look very boring next to an euro-accord. Example: http://www.spvvius.ru/-car/car2.JPG

Comment by Bavaria, posted on May11 at 7:27 pm
  22. Could those headlights wrap around any more? I think not. It’s not bad for a bread-and-butter car. But, when I was a kid, a family sedan did not have to be boring. Look at a ‘67 Bonneville or Electra…even Impalas and LTD’s were pretty cool. Why do they have to be so boring today? hmmmm….I think that’s why the new Malibu appeals to me, kinda has a little more style than any sedan of it’s size and price. (To me)

we get the euro accord as well, it’s just marketed and sold as the acura tsx.
i have to agree that this new accord looks pretty damn boring. not any more than some of the others out there, though.

  25. Bunch of whiners. Honda will sell millions of these. Chances are you or someone you know will own one. Auto mags will worship its praises. It will take #1 or #2 in every comparison. Honda will need to buy another trophy case for all the awards. It will retain its value better and be more reliable than almost anything else on the road.
    So its bland. BFD

  28. It’s very disappointing to see this new Accord. I thought they would have made more efforts to make the styling more drastic and aggressive to capture the attention. I really expected something more in the lines of the Civi or the FCX concept. How can Honda come up with the new Civic and 2 years later, come up with something like this???

This one looks more like a mix of Sonata and Sebring than anything else. The new Altima and even the latest Camry look better than this to me (I hate to say this though). The competition will be fierce from GM with the Saturn Aura the upcoming Malibu. With the mid-size sedan market being so crowded, this car will sell well only because of its name equity.

Comment by toto72, posted on May11 at 8:34 pm
  29. Wow… this is car is the most boring looking Accord I have ever seen… and I have owned 4 different models in the past so it’s not that I’m hating. That rear end is so uninspiring. What the hell happened when they were drawing it? Did they run out of ink?

Comment by stick2clutch, posted on May11 at 8:41 pm
  30. Ugly rear end, bland front end… if this thing makes it to production as is, it’ll be the ugliest Accord ever. Will it sell? I’d bet the house on it. Fortunately, Hondas always have the mechanical bits nailed down. The Accord has always had great success in the market place, and people who buy them tend to stick with them. I’ve owned four different models… albeit, the last two were Japanese Euro R models.

  31. huh…? wuh…? new toaster? oh yeah, neat.
while i dont think it breaks any molds, i’ll bet when the tape is off and more of the details are visible, the design will look more cohesive. but definately not ‘gotta-have’ looks.
could this be another indication that the mighty japanese companies will crack under the pressure of success and fame?

  33. I see a lot of Sonata in the rear, I think it’s an unattractive car that will please people that are in the market for this type of car. Personally if I had the choice between the Camry, Altima, Sonata, or Accord I’d take the Altima.

  35. Ah you all move too soon in the crisis situation. You are looking at a test car only. Its not finish so judge not least ye be judge. It’ll do fine. I think I would go with the Fusion first though. But the Honda Accord will still have many innovative features the others only dream about

Comment by Flying Sukahara, posted on May12 at 1:44 am
  36. I’m a bit dissapointed too, but I kinda expected to be. I do think it’s nicer than the current Accord, and FAR nicer looking than that awful bloated Camry. I’ll never understand why the Camry outsells the Accord. The Accord has always been the nicer looking, better driving, nicer interior’d car with an equally impressive reiability reputation. I can’t say this new model gets my pulse racing, but I sure hope it’ll outsell the Camry again.

That being said, I also think the new Altima is the best looking, and the Sonota second.

Comment by MurcieMe, posted on May12 at 3:00 am
  37. This is boring coming from Honda. I have to agree that the Nissan Altima takes the crown for being the best-looking midsize family sedan out there. Nothing the often biased Car and Driver car reviewers can do to make this car better looking.

Comment by Carnut4ever, posted on May12 at 5:51 am
  38. never thought i would say it but the side view just past the passenger window where the tape is liiks like the last gen impala, all you need is the chrome emblem in that little viod .

Comment by CTS DRIVER, posted on May12 at 9:03 am
  39. Out of all the comments posted thus far, Global_Lightning is the only one making any sense. It may not outsell the Camry, but it will be the benchmark for its segment. Millions might be a stretch, but this generation will probably sell at least a million Accords. It will DEFINITELY outsell the Altima, spykotic.

As for the styling, I believe this is Honda’s attempt at a mild BMW 5 Series, without all of the outlandish surfaces. It’s good enough.

Comment by Ray Sinclair, posted on May12 at 10:10 am
  40. This is the first time I can say that the Camry actually looks A LOT better than the Accord.

It’s also the first time all of domestics have equal or better looking models. Amazing.

Comment by Kaizen, posted on May12 at 10:39 am
  41. Boring? Bland?? Unimaginative???
I agree, but it will outsell everything else on the road, with maybe one lame exception.
    .
I personally thank God it does not look like that piece of **** retarded-ass hydrocephalic Civic Sedan. Man I want to vomit every time I see those, and since Accords are destined to be ubiquitous, at the very least they should be inoffensive to look at.
    .
As to the Altima, yes it looks better and is more “desirable” but Nissan’s option packages are actually designed to diminish sales. Want leather in that 3.5 Altima? Well it’s linked to Package A, B, C, and F so that leather is gonna cost you $4,000 and the price is now over 30k. I don’t see too many of them on the road for a reason, and Nissan’s unit sales are in the toilet. Plus they want to saddle people with that POS CVT. Honda is smarter than that.

Comment by CAPTAIN AMERICA, posted on May12 at 12:14 pm
  44. Total disappointment!!! I expected Honda to pull out all the stops on this one but I guess they would rather lose sales than to be #1. When I saw the coupe I was a little excited about trading in the daily driver (2002 Dodge Intrepid R/T) for the new Accord, since i had driven a previous generation and was impressed with its handling and interior but not the exterior. Now to finally see the finished product which doesn’t resemble the Sports4 concept in any sense, I wonder if they ever intended to make the Accord appeal to anyone other than those with no style. Oh well I guess I will just have to pony up a few grand more and await the arrival of the new TSX and TL.

  46. Smart design. The conservative styling will appeal to older buyers who feel that cars like the altima and camry are too “out there”. It’s not pushing the envelope, but it’s not taking any steps backwards either.

More than a Dodge Neon looks like a Plymouth Neon. Anyway, I do think the styling of the new Malibu is good and it is a definite move in the right direction. JUST MY OPINION.

  53. Dang, guys, what’s boring about this sedan? That’s a new looking profile with different door handles and a touch of athleticism. The creases are a little more pronounced which means that it’s gonna look just a touch more muscular.

I mean, what do you want, every car to try to be the Avenger? The Malibu tried to be different in the current gen, do you like that?

I think this will look good and sell even better.

Comment by Brendino, posted on May13 at 11:01 am
  54. After seeing the other 6 shots at MotorTrend, I think Honda may have something here.. particularly in profile, this is a much more balanced design than the current pointy hood/hunchback trunk model, and the cabin area seems to be much less claustrophobic than the past few Accord sedans due to the BMW-like reverse kink of the side door window. The oddly bulgy headlights look bland from the front but are more interesting from the rear 3/4 view, much like the current Odyssey and CR-V. This may actually stand out in a sea of CamrySonataOptimaFusion-alikes without being as polarizing as the Altima and Avenger/Sebring.

  58. The Civic Sedan looks good. I don’t know why everyone dislikes it so much. It has a very good conservative look and I like the front end and tail. The Civic coupe, on the other hand…. I think it looks like an egg. I’d forgive an AWD egg car. Maybe.

This Accord sedan is even worse than any current Civic in the lineup. Wow. It looks like the last generation Mitsubishi Galant. And of course… it’s typical Honda FWD.

You’re lack of ability to even give it the time to be officially introduced to the public with actual pictures of the real CAR shows how much of a car fan you are. And hahaha, you’re careful analysis of the Japanese automakers up there seems to leave out Mazda and Subaru, who actually do make thoroughly interesting vehicles throughout their model lines. 81. The sedan looks rather classy, except for the wart of a headlight from the rear 3/4 view. As for the coupe, why do automakers feel the need to design a lard-ass rear sloping away from the trunk? It doesn’t really give the sporty image that a two-door is supposed to have. And finally, if BMW had patented it’s famous Hofmeister kink, a lot of vehicles would have to look for a new rear side window design.

Comment by obsessedwithautos, posted on June27 at 7:24 am
  82. Margingal improvement over the current model, which isn’t saying much. I don’t think I’ll be buying one (unless they come out with that diesel, then I might buy one for a commuter car).

Definitely one of the ugliest exhaust tip setups I’ve ever seen. They could have at least tried to conceal the fact that it’s a tiny exhaust pipe BEHIND the tip. Having a tiny exhaust pipe sticking out surrounded by a big exhaust tip with metal filling around it looks hideous and cheap.

Considering it’s boring looking, and most people LOVE boring looking cars, it should be a huge sales hit.

  91. There seem to be quite a few resemblances to the car’s most direct competitor, the Camry/Solara. The sedan taillights and rear fascia look pretty similar to the Camry, and the front end has taken on a more bubble-like shape just like the Camry did from its previous design. As far as the coupe goes, I wouldn’t say that it’s a rebadged Solara, but it’s damn close. This is all kind of disapointing considering the current run of Accords seemed to be an indication of Honda taking a slightly more edgy (I use this term relatively speaking, it IS an Accord) approach to its design with the sharper lines and creases. As a Honda/Acura fan, all I can do is hope that this softer design never creeps into the TL line. But that engine would be quite nice stuffed under the hood of an Acura with TSX-like proportions.

  94. The grille on the coupe looks aftermarket. I bet it will be a HFP dealer option. As for the rest, it’s good to see Honda finally breaking out of the boring-mobile trap it got into 8 years ago. A lot of people will love it or hate it, but it will still sell millions.

“I hate GM, but the Saturn Aura is by far the best looking car in this class right right–even more so than the Altima.”

Again, there is more to looks when deciding to purchase a family car. Things like interior quality and reliability do matters in case you didn’t know.

I’ll reserve my judgement of the new Accord until I buy one.

  112. I admit the sedan has a strong hint of the current Sonata in its silhouette but … since the Sonata looks 1000 times better than the current Camry or Accord, that is a good thing.

And although the Coupe above does not look as good as the Altima coupe, Nissan’s option packing makes leather a $5,000 option bundled with BS I don’t want, so I’d take the Accord Coupe (which will probably get 4mpg more with the V6).

And those who are oddly hung up about the puniness of an exhaust pipe would better spend their exceedingly limited abilities worrying about the puniness of their own pipe.

In other news, I think this new Accord could go without the busy character line carved into the side. Honda should cave in the side a little like Lexus to create a clean-cut look. Also, too much chrome in the side windows. The whole thing looks like an Acura TL and an RL blended in together. With some 3-series, of course. Overall, pretty nice, both the coupe and sedan.

Though not earth shaking, it looks pretty good in person, clean, tight lines, perhaps not as sleek as a Civic or Altima, but certainly better looking than a Camry, and much less Buick-ish than the current car.

  128. Okay, I think I don’t like this car anymore.

The grille looks blocky and outdated, while the bug-eyed headlights mirror the styling error that is the Camry’s front end. The beltline looks like a Sebring or an ‘08 Focus. Just drop the handles below the line, and it’d look ten times better! Also, the door handles are different, but a bit too big. It just doesn’t match the flow of the profile.

The back end is pretty cool. But not enough to salvage the design.

Of course, this is based on photography alone. I’m sure I’ll have a different impression in person.

Comment by Brendino, posted on July2 at 7:04 pm
  129. The headlights definitely look plucked from the Sonata. But everything else to me somewhat screams previous-gen Altima, with some slightly original taillights.

Comment by 0GSharK6, posted on July2 at 7:30 pm

It looks like absolute ****, and in fact looks stupid on a monte carlo, but at least gm’s designers kept it halfway subdued. Holy **** … I’ll wait till I see the real thing, but I was a bit interested before … now I am not sure. Plus the flow off the tail lights into the bumber looks contrived and cliché.

But it’ll sell in ****loads and win every Consumer Report accolade - just watch. Maybe the coupe will have a better take …

  137. Honda in my opinion have always made dated looking cars even when new except the S2000. This new Accord is just as dated looking but it does look better than the current model. I like the C pillar as it looks very BMWish. The grill looks like it came off Honda’s Element which is one of the ugliest cars in my opinion. The car looks like a true Toyota Camry fighter which is what Honda was hoping for. Even though I would never buy it, I am sure that it is a competent vehicle that will be enjoyed by someone.

Its not ugly, but it is highly derivative of other cars on the market and very conservative. Its pretty obvious they were studying the 5 series a lot when designing this car. I’m sure the interior is much better than the exterior.

I would have no problem buying that and exchanging my TL! The sedan is a blatant rip of the Bavarian Motor Works (BMW) 5-series but hey the Accord has to go more upscale. I like the design I just hope that they will change the RL engine to the 3.7 they use in the MDX otherwise the Accord, TL and RL will have the same power plant. Toyota Camry and Lexus ES& GS350 use the same engine but they have enough sense to offer a V8 in the GS. The RL competes with the GS not the LS BTW
