Honda’s Mugen line of factory-installed performance products is more than well-known to Honda enthusiasts in North America, but cars equipped with Mugen goodies haven’t been sold here until now. Starting later this month, Honda will sell the track-tested Mugen Civic Si.

The Mugen model differs in that it sits 0.6 inches lower to the ground on a tightened up suspension, has unique 18 inch forged aluminum wheels, a unique aero bodykit and sports exhaust system.

The Mugen models will be available exclusively in Fiji Blue Pearl. Inside, a Mugen Limited Edition badge and an exclusive gear knob will separate it from other Civic Si models.

Underhood, the Mugen is identical to other Civic Si models. The Mugen will be limited to 1,000 examples and will be priced from $29,500, not including taxes and destination charges.

  1. They lowered it, put a body kit on it, and some rims and now its a 30,000 dollar civic? You know these are going to be ridicously marked up just like the GT500 was.

  4. i’ll take a speed6, an 08 wrx hatch, an evo X RS, a 350z, or even a mustang GT over this for 30k. or if you must have a honda product how about an 08 accord coupe v6 with a manual? seriously… 30k?!

  5. The rear air diffuser (if that’s what you want to call it) looks cheap to me…

I like everything else aside from the front end, which seems a little flat, but $30,000? I’d be extremely suprised if it was competitive with cars in the same price range.

  8. Yeah, for that kind of cash, in that size and class of car, I’d want AWD at least. WRX gets my vote.

  10. Probably $29,999 plus $5,000 dealer markup at least. And it’s not even the coupe, which would have made somewhat more sense.

  11. Man this is almost a yr old news!! Its gets Showa Dampers/Mugen springs/Bodykit/wheels. Since the US will never get the Type-R this is the BS we get from Honda. The new Si’s are absolutely ugly the new UK Type-R blows this away. For under $30k you can get a secondhand GTI/A3 w/ 2.0t and chip it/intake/exhaust/downpipe and blow this POS away anyday with AC on, 103 degree weather and have $ to spare for rims. Even the new C30 is going to be under 28k w/236bhp I5 and gobs of torque.

  12. I could see 24K or 25K for this. Nevertheless I’m sure there are enough Honda fanboys to sell 1000 of these at 30K

  13. I’m a Honda fan (I own an 03 Accord coupe EX-V6) and that is just way too much money for an SI with a body kit, lowered supsension and rims…even if they are “Mugen”. And on the interior all you get is a badge and a shift knob?! That’s rediculous, they should’ve atleast upgraded the front seats.

Sad part is that although it’ll out handle an Accord…any baseline Accord V6 will out accelerate it without breaking a sweat. Some punk kid in a current model SI wanted to play with me a few weeks ago, he hung around until about 60 and then I just cruised away, LOL.

  14. 30k is way to much for this car….for that price you could almost have a 3 series, or an acura tsx, saab 9-3, audi A3, all of witch are better cars.

Comment by Fromes, posted on July24 at 2:02 pm
  15. OK, Honda is saying UNDER$30K.
Without anything new under the hood, it’s not going above $25K. That’s a shame because Mugen Honda engines are intense. Over at the Temple of VTEC (www.vtec.net) they already have a testdrive.

Comment by global_lightning, posted on July24 at 2:07 pm
  16. Wow I don’t know what to think. I was into getting an Si soon because you seem to get a good amount of stuff for $22K. But this Mugen, I like the looks but I can’t see how it’s worth almost $30,000. I’d much rather try to find an older Evo or WRX for that price.

  19. Snork: I’d never pay more than $55 for any 4-wheeled honda!

  20. Too funny…Honda took a page out of GM’s old “SS” book. Rims, plastic body kit and a shifter knob, just what the customer ordered!

Comment by Piablo, posted on July24 at 5:43 pm
  21. Ha ha. Mugen cars are sweet, but thank God the rest of us get the real deal FD2 Type R. I feel sorry for all you Americans… you always get the watered down versions of most foreign brands. The new FD2 R turns laps around Tsukuba Circuit over a second faster than the old DC5 Integra R, and runs Suzuka Circuit about 5 seconds faster, bone stock. That’s just a hair behind an NSX Type S and faster than an S2000.

Comment by jamaicandude, posted on July24 at 5:57 pm
  22. Haha, except that SS’s actually get an upgraded engine. The Si is upgraded over the standard Civic but the Mugen depicted here hardly is, at least as far as engine output goes.

Comment by 0GSharK6, posted on July24 at 6:38 pm
  23. See stock civic si does 0-60 in the 6.5sec range, so Rompn4x you have a vette that does 0-60 in 0.6 sec, wow! you rock!! dumb ass. this car is definately not worth $30k, but I bet it comes in about $25k from Honda with no nav.

Comment by jsherm007, posted on July24 at 6:40 pm
  24. The nav should be stock to add in value for that much dough.

Comment by cwwilson, posted on July24 at 6:50 pm
  25. Start watering down the Mugen name. Instead of looking to the SS, why not learn from Mazdaspeed. Oh wait, Honda has to retain its championship in the RICE category. Instead of having riceboy putting a 747 wings on their Civic, we will do that for you off the assembly line!

Comment by sharpie, posted on July24 at 7:06 pm
  26. I suppose any sort of body styling by a Japanese manufacturer… especially Honda, is deemed “rice” by a lot of people on this forum. Considering that all Mugen kits are wind tunnel tested and provide functional aerodynamics, I’d hesitate to call it rice. Disagree with the looks if you like, but it works. That’s why Mugen kits aren’t cheap.

  30. Not worth .02 cents more than $22K

    anything else is a ripoff

It is FWD, thus rendering it a non performance car. Just a very well executed economy car.

  31. It’s a good looking car but the huge wing makes it look like a ricer.

  33. “That’s why Mugen kits aren’t cheap.”

They’re cheap… just get the imitations from body kit companies. Exact copy molded from originals.

Comment by Veda, posted on July25 at 8:45 am
  34. Does anybody outside of Japan get the FD2 Type R? I know they have a Civic they like to call the Type R in Europe, though it really just as the Si engine and rides on a completely different chassis than the real Type R (torsion beam rear suspension even).

Comment by kosai03, posted on July25 at 8:59 am
  35. Under $30k means nipping at the heels of $30k. No one thinking about buying a Mugen SI should expect to see a sticker much less than that. Hopefully, the reception to a four-door Mugen kit will be lukewarm enough to keep dealer mark-ups low.
Still, Honda hasn’t done enough at a low enough price to make me interested.
And, I like the “SS” analogy. Sure, Chevy SS models have engine upgrades, but the body mods take center stage, and the engine upgrades with some models aren’t that signicant. And if you can get a Cobalt SS, will you get that excited about a Corvette SS? The problem is you SHOULD, because, the Blue Devil will be a complete monster that’ll eat Z06’s, Porsches, and likely Ferraris for breakfast. But if the “SS” badge generally represents watered down product, then I think it lessens a quality product that you stick it onto. The point is here: if you’re going to officially introduce North American enthusiasts to Mugen, give us something more than…. this. And certainly don’t take away 30,000 of our hard-earned bucks for it.

And who would be able to tell the difference on the street? It’s the obvious the smarter choice. But if you want to burn your spare money go ahead…

Comment by Veda, posted on July25 at 8:47 pm
  42. I don’t give a rat’s ass what people on the street think. I’d be able to tell the difference. I buy cars I like & do what I want to do to them, & I wouldn’t put a fake Mugen kit on my car. I had a full Genuine Mugen kit on my CL7 Euro R and it looked and fit way better than the knockoffs I’ve seen. The difference is in the little details, like the fit and finish of the product. Rock fake goods if you like, but I’d rather not have a Mugen kit than have a fake one. Theres nothing wrong with a stock car. That’s like wearing a fake Rolex… fine if you’re a poser, or if you need to compensate for the lack of something… For telling time, a Casio or Timex does the job just fine, and that’s where my money would go if I couldn’t afford one. I don’t do fake.

How “smart” it is is relative. Pinch your pennies and buy the fake stuff if that’s what floats your boat. I’d rather keep it stock and throw some after market wheels on it than sport some cheap fake-name brand junk.

  43. These bastards deleted my post…

As I was saying: Who’d be able to tell the difference? I would. I don’t care about people on the street. I buy cars I like & do what I want to do to them, & I’d much rather keep it stock and throw on a nice set of wheels than rock some fake-name brand body kit. The difference is in the details. I had a full genuine Mugen kit on my CL7 Euro R and it looked and fit way better than any fake I’ve seen.

How “smart” it is irrelevant. Do you always buy the cheap knock offs? Well, I don’t do fake. Rather than buy a fake Rolex because the genuine one’s too expensive, I’d just buy a Casio or Timex… they both tell time just fine. I’m not into posing. There’s nothing wrong with a stock car. Pinch your pennies and buy fake stuff if you want. It’s genuine or nothing for me.

I’ve seen lots of fake BMW M and Audi RS kits, but I’m sure the real BMW and Audi enthusiasts would tell you the same thing… it’s not the same as the original. Real enthusiasts don’t put crap on their cars. Go buy a fake set of BBS or OZ wheels and I’m sure you’d change your tune when they bend or crack after a couple miles on a rough road, or one off-road excursion on a track day. Sure they might look like the original, and “people on the street” couldn’t tell the difference, but trust me… you’d know it.

  44. Great… now the first post’s back. Thanks LLN.

Comment by jamaicandude, posted on July25 at 10:31 pm
  45. jamaicandude, I’m into efficiency so if those copied (mind you exact molds from the original) kits look and perform exactly the same as the originals then nothing wrong with that. It’s really the performance gain that I’m interested in since the design of Mugen kits look too ricey compared to Modulo. But what’s the point of “tuning” an ugly “sport” car like the Civic anyway…

When it comes to watches, yes you would want to get the real thing cause I happen to collect high end watches and I can tell a fake from the real thing right away. Of course a Rolex is like a Civic, the overpriced watch for the ignorant masses. Same deal with wheels, I’d always get originals cause it’s safety related. But yea, buy what you want.
