@desertdweller
U r right numbers don't lie, people do. I stated that Honda manufactures higher percentage of cars in US that Honda sells in US then anyone of big 3. All BBB3 manufacture more outside of US for US market then Honda percentage wise. If you know what percentage means you can understand what I said. Then again, few more beers and nothing will make sense.

My proof is in the resale values in which the superior cars from Honda and Toyota have higher values than the D3 comparables
You have to prove it otherwise My evidence is in the FACTS and it is used in US Courts of LAW !
Before spouting off why dont you look up some values and see for yourself
In 10 years the D3 can prove themselves just like Honda and Toyota had to do

Detroit 3 needs to shut down for 6 months. We could use the vacation. We don't need the cars. Unemployment Insurance for the win!

miket, my point is, is that i've had minimal problems with things seizing up on GM cars.... I took a leaking gas tank out of a 1971 Pontiac GTO, came out nice and easy, did a fuel pump on a 1992 Cavalier, came out easily, exhaust on my own 1981 Olds Delta88, again, nice and easy. Hondas and Nissans over 8 or 10 years old, everything seizes, heads snap, etc.

HOW these cars got a reputation for "quality" remains a mystery to me.

"Although most Americans still feel as though the Big Three’s sales troubles are more closely tied to inferior products and dismal fuel economy ratings rather than a slumping economy, the latest news from Honda should change at least a few minds."

Just love it when LLN sees things as Black and White. But I don't expect anything less from them. There is blood on the street and all automakers including Honda has to cut back. But that is not to say that the Big 3's products do not have their own faults, like a history of inferior products until recently and dismal fuel economy, which is improving, mind if I add.

"so they don’t care about using quality materials that remain serviceable for over a decade.so they don’t care about using quality materials that remain serviceable for over a decade."

That's funny, I have worked on a 30 year old honda bike, a 35 yr old Z, a 90 and 88 fords 93 toyota and a 97 jeep without noticing the planned obsolescence that you mention. Things wear with age. Things seize with age. Thats all it is. Then again, the internet is vast with ranting from fanboys.

If I had any gripe for the imports vs the domestics, it would be using the "disposible" clips for interior panels. Yeah its a pain to replace the little things, but everything seals up nice and tight with the new ones.

LLN didn't say that the big 3 have inferior products and fuel efficiency, it said that MOST AMERICANS perceive this to be the case. That's probably correct -- talk to some real people about cars and see for yourself what their perception is.

Cobalt gets better economy than the Fit. G6 gets better economy than the Accord. What does that have to do with rebadges?

Honda and the other Japanese makers use crap material that's more prone to rusting, and screw heads that twist off or round off. It's cheap junk that's designed to last only 10 years because laws in Japan make it very expensive to keep a car past 10 years, so they're all exported to 3rd world countries...... so they don't care about using quality materials that remain serviceable for over a decade.

Just because GM rebadges a bunch of the same model does not make the entire lineup "fuel efficient"

I almost believe that dribble about your 20 year old firebird being like a 5 year old car. Unless you mean that it was easy to replace the parts, because most of em were recently installed.

The mullet may have obscured your view.

WHY does EVERY ARTICLE have to mention "dismal fuel economy ratings" and "inferior products" when all one has to do is look at www.fueleconomy.gov to see that many GM products EXCEED HONDA in fuel economy!!!

Meanwhile, today I installed a new set of fuel injectors in a 1989 Pontiac Firebird 305 TPI with 190,000 miles and working on IT was like working a car only 5 years old, meanwhile the other mechanic was changing the alternator in a 1992 Honda Civic with 200,000 miles and it was a BITCH with all the CHEAP HARDWARE rusted together!

Toyota, Honda and rest of the Asians better hope the Big 3 don't go down!

If this happens, they will be taking what's left of this rotten economy with them. And no one will be left with a job... so no one is going to buy all of those Accords, Camry's and the like.

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR.

bradleygt,

Don't bother with 1115. He thinks that blue book values prove whether one car is more reliable than the other. That's about as silly as fuel economy figures being used to prove reliability.

I remember reading something somewhere about the futility of arguing with a fool...

1115...wheres this proof you spout off at? I mean you don't believe JD Power or any other data that is shown to you, UNLESS it proves you are 'right'. Please show some CURRENT links to a non biased source that proves how much more reliable and better the Imports are . Prove to me that me actually working for a domestic store and seeing cars, trucks and SUV's traded in with high mileage (over 100k) and running fine was an illusion!

I have worked for Domestic and Import. Both have good points, both have bad points. I don't think ANYone on this website(outside of NMOFGM) would say that the Domestics are perfect and don't need to restructure in many areas. BUT as this shows and other data shows the imports are feeling the crunch also. All automakers were producing to many cars for the current market and all have to high of costs across the board.

Do yourself a favor. Educate yourself before spouting off. Actually drive a Domestic car for week. If you can have an open mind and realize that just maybe the American cars are built with similiar quality and attractive style to your beloved imports, just maybe you can understand what some of us are talking about.

and whether you want to believe this or not, its true: IF the domestics go down, your beloved honda and toyota will be right behind them in asking for funds.

Everything had to fall back to Earth sooner or later. The only guys who are going to be prospering in the short term are automotive technicians because more and more people are going to be holding onto their sh*tboxes just that much longer waiting for the next thing to break."

That's exactly my case. I am holding on my sh•tbox Volvo 98 for at least another year. Before buying a car I need to feed and shelter my family first. The worst scenario, I will start riding my bike. For sure will be better for my health and environment. haha

@Borat - do you just make stuff up to get a reaction from people? GM manufactured 9.3 million vehicles globally in 2007. Honda manufactured 3.9 million. GM's marketshare of the automotive sales for 2007 was 23.4% while Honda's marketshare was 9.4%. Since GM sells more vehicles in the U.S. than Honda & they don't import vehicles, wouldn't it make sense that they produce more? It doesn't take a rocket science to figure out that you are incorrect. Elementary school math would suffice. Now the other statement you made about the "Detriot 3" making more vehicles outside of the U.S.: GM produces 13% of all vehicles worldwide, Toyota @ 11.8%, VW & Ford @ 8%, & finally your beloved Honda @ 5.4%. Numbers don't lie!

“Although most Americans still feel as though the Big Three’s sales troubles are more closely tied to inferior products and dismal fuel economy ratings rather than a slumping economy…”
Sounds about right to me. I actually prove that J2 are superior though

Everything had to fall back to Earth sooner or later. The only guys who are going to be prospering in the short term are automotive technicians because more and more people are going to be holding onto their sh*tboxes just that much longer waiting for the next thing to break.

This sucks. On the other hand, most of these will be cut from TL production (the new model isnt moving), and also Accords which are down over 60% in unit sales from their peak a few months back, so that means less of those abortions and eyesores on the road, so there is a silver lining to this announcement.

To compare apples to apples from manufacturer to manufacturer in regards to cutbacks they need to be discussed as a percentage of last years sales. Thus, the manufacturer with a larger percentage of market share will in turn see larger production cut backs.

If you look at the number of cuts by percentages, Honda is cutting a bigger amount of their production. No big deal, it's not like too many U.S. autoworkers will lose their jobs with Honda cutting production.

Things will get worse before they get better for everyone. With the slowdown in the economy and people spending less. And the looming failure of automakers, and production cuts this can only spread to suppliers and other supporters of the auto industry.

As production numbers decreases, amount of products required from suppliers decrease. This results in job loss, or even a whole shift at a plant being eliminated at the suppliers end. When the auto manufacturing plants start to cut production, they start working at a loss as well. If you look at how honda structures their production schedule they look to output a target number of vehicles a day. When that number is decreased, they are paying the same amount of money for labor to build less cars, which leads to decreased profits.

As some companies are already starting to do is taking longer christmas recesses, that will cut production days down, this is one way to control profitability of their vehicles; however in the grand scheme of things as more jobs are cut, more people will not find work, more people will spend less, less people buy vehicles, and the economy as a whole we start to collapse.

Even if the bailout was given to the Big 3, there is no way to ensure that the general population would purchase automobiles; therefore the rising inventories at shipyards, and autoplants across the country will just grow.

The used car market is also saturated, so with a world with so much choice and very little income where are people to go. We will see how this whole economy plays out for my career once I graduate, hopefully my years working at a mechanical engineering and business degree will not be lost by me working for a mcdonalds.

Lets do the math kids: Honda already was planning to cut 59K units and now cuts 119K units, that's 178K units cut. Now GM is cutting 250K units, yet it was reputed to be (before success by failure) 3-4 times size of Honda. Somebody needs a math remediation on a 2nd grade level.

Struggle - yup.

And it's funny because when the media announced that there will be a recession/slow down in the economy, people started to spend less, which in turn caused the recession that would not have occurred otherwise.
