Honda says that its Greensburg, Indiana, assembly plant has begun producing Civic sedans for sale in North and Central American export markets. The plant, which has been open for just under a year, previously only built vehicles for sale in the United States.

“Our Greensburg plant has ramped up to full single-shift production, and now we have embarked on production for export. This is another step in our growth,” Rick Schostek, Honda Manufacturing of Indiana vice president, said in a prepared statement.

The plant has produced about 50,000 Civics so far. Honda utilizes most of its other North American assembly plants to build vehicles for the export market, as well, and it says that increased production capacity was in the cards from the beginning at the plant. Some automakers, most notably Mitsubishi, have mulled switching North American plants over to almost entirely export facilities in response to dwindling demand in the U.S. and the favorable exchange rate created by the soft dollar.

Expect only minor trim differences between U.S./Canadian-spec Civics and those sold in other markets in the Americas.
