Honda is developing a convertible version of its new Civic coupe, according to a report in Popular Mechanics magazine. Details remain scarce, but the report indicates the car could arrive “within two years.” If it arrives, PM says to expect the options to include a 197-hp Si model. A good idea? Convertible Civic? If done properly, it could become a hit.
I just wish Honda would bring European hatch to U.S…

no…. it’s going to look like a VW cabriolet if they do that… It’s too small and not proportioned correctly for convertible… Just turn the engine sideways and make a RWD version… call it the Si-R

If they keep the bumble-butt, it’ll look hideous. Ray, people who generalize indiscriminately are idiots. If you think the MX-5, the Boxster S, the SL63, the Carerra GT, the F430 convertible, the 575M Maranello Superamerica and the E46 M3 soft top are chick cars, then you’re a fizzle. Couldn’t be simpler.

and what do you drive? a big rusty chevy truck with a shotgun in the cab?
my next car will be an S2000(which is honda’s best car right now) and it’s a convertible. does that make me a “girly-man?” no
about the civic: I don’t really see it as anything special, but it’ll probably sell, so good work honda

The convertible based on the US coupe would be fine. As for the US sedan, Honda should just replace it with the European five door. FAR BETTER.

about time — actually not in time cause I need a new car now! I love convertables, but there are no inexpensive convertables that aren’t aimed at women. I would buy a civic convertable BUT NOT a bug convertable.

Nick – look at the MX-5. However, if you want an inexpensive grand tourer style four seater, good luck, unless you buy something used, because they do tend to have a “chick car” stigma associated with then.

More options should normally equal more sales. Since Honda/Acura offers a lot less models than say Toyota/Lexus, I am all for having variety in their automobiles. If only they would add more options to the Acura line …

Only a few cars imho pass as convertibles for men:
Mustangs
Volvo C70
Audi RS4 Cab
Ford GTX1

Thank you Steve. Convertibles are STILL chick cars, no matter which way you cut it. Sorry I do not drive a big rusty truck, Nor am I a redneck. Could’nt be any more off the mark. Sorry ‘Peter’. *snicker*
Saw a poor middle aged balding man driving a s2000 in 50 degree weather with the top down the other day. “Look at me girlies! I’m cool!” LOL!!! I prefer REAL sports cars. Hard tops! Horsepower! Convertibles for men = Complex.

Wow. I wish I knew where to start. Really, I wish I wasn’t at work and had more time to respond in greater detail.
1. Convertibles are not inherantly chick cars.
2. The mustang, boxter s, and volvo c70 are chick cars, I don’t care what you say
3. The ford gtx1 doesn’t count because it is not and probibly will never see production.
4. The issue with convertibles is not that they are femanine, but rather that they sacrifice performance and structural integrity in favor of an open top.
5. Hard top convertibles only make the previous issue worse.
6. Truth is, the difference of performance (0-62 times) between a F430 convertible or the 575M Maranello Superamerica and there hardtop counterparts is minimal relative to to the difference between, say, a civic and convertible civic (probibly more than a .2 second difference).
7. The quality and depth of engeniering in supercars is much more involved that that which would go into a civic, hence, there would likely be a significant differance in speed and handeling, noticable to even the most novice driver.
8. Cars/models in which performance is not the focal point (ie a civic sans type-r) must focus on other aspects like comfort. A cost-saving down market convertible will not be able to include all of the additional sound dampening materials in order to keep the ride at a similer sound level, hence, a louder cabin which is less desirable.
If i had more time i would get further into it, but you get the idea.

Convertible Civic has been done. It was called the del Sol. It’s about time Honda picked up the ball they dropped on that one.

I think some of you are missing it. Chick cars have nothing to do with performance. It is about the image you put forth to the rest of the world. Also, I never said they all were chick cars. I just said that the S2000 was. There are more, but that is the only one I mentioned.

Why are you all putting down the S2000 like it’s a civic? it’s on a completely different performance level.
todays mustang and the S2000 were designed with no top in mind, hence they were overbuilt and don’t need “reinforcement” to stiffen the chassis

Wrong Peter. They did the best they could to stiffen the chasis in the mustang with what they had, but it could still be improved. And it’s original design was based on a hard top.
“Chick cars have nothing to do with performance.” Shenanigans. Underperformance is directly associated with “chick cars.” If it had exceptional performance, no one would care what image they are putting forth. Exibit A — Mini Cooper S, and before you ramble on about how that is the girliest car of ‘em all, it beats a carrera s around a road course anyday.

This is the stupidest comment yet! Tell me, what Honda is as fast as an S2000? Do the research buddy, and you’ll realize how wrong you are. It’s also one of the only pure sports car besides the NSX with it’s RWD…You stick to your FWD wanna be Honda “sports cars”, if thet’s your idea of a guys car LOL

Comment to OSX2000: I owned a Del Sol. It was nothing like a civic. I loved the car except it was difficult to lift the top off and put it in the trunk. I wrote Honda several times telling them to make a convertible civic. I just would like to suggest that make it a hybrid also.

I would totally buy a Civic convertible… I live in the US where small convertible choices are woefully limited. I recently traded in my ‘05 MINI cabrio for a Honda Element (needed cargo space for home projects). I’m looking for another small convertible about 2 years from now (after the E is paid for), and there’s just not much out there with room for 2 tall adults (I’m 6′3″) plus a dog shelf (all the MINI back seat was good for — but you gotta have room for the dog (she loves convertibles), so that rules out Z3, Z4, MX-5, etc.)
The MINI quality is questionable (I had quite a few problems with mine) — and you’re pushing $30K US… If Honda came out with a 200bhp Civic convert for $25K or so, I’d snap one up in a heartbeat!

I was seaching for a Conversion Company to see if anyone was thinking of converting the new Civic SI into a drop top. Became really excited after seeing that Honda may do something here. I must just be a “girly man” as I have been driving a VW Cabrio for 11 years. When teased by other men, I just say tell them that you can drive one if you’re sure of your masculinity!! That shuts them up. Anyway, back to the question. I’d love a chance to buy a Honda Civic SI convertible – the biggest gripe I have with my Cabrio is lack of power.

Can someone follow up on this one to confirm if it’s true or not? Civic SI coupe is out with 197 horses. If they offer this as hard top convertible, I’d buy one.
