During a major news conference today, Honda announced plans to build a $550 million automobile plant that will employ 2,000 associates on a 1,700-acre tract in Decatur County, Indiana, near Greensburg, 50 miles southeast of Indianapolis. The news comes after months of rumors about another possible U.S. car plant.

Don’t they know they are treading on the wrong turf here? If you have nothing to offer General Motors, then you have nothing to offer this country so do us a favor and stay out. Real American’s don’t buy foriegn junk, they buy General Motors

More than a half-billion dollars of investment and 2000 jobs for the people of Indiana. Not Mexico….
Boy I tell you those evil Japanese at Honda are out to get us Americans, spending money and providing jobs here in the states. What will they do next? I bet its another evil anti-American plot involving affordable, reliable, eco-friendly automobiles. They must be stopped! Quick, everyone run to the nearest domestic dealership and buy a Mexican made car, only then can we defeat the evil Japanese!

What is scheduled/proposed to be built/assembled there? Just curious.
From a business standpoint, although I don’t know the economics of it, it seems to be a good idea to build in the country of final destination, so that supply times are shorter. However, costs may be higher, but since there is no ‘halfway around the world’ travel, I imagine it may be good. Let’s hope they don’t hire UAW workers, and they train the US workers themselves, so they are as anal as Japanese in building the cars (whatever they may be).

Alexander,
Regardless of Honda’s intentions or motivations, the facts remain. They are investing in the US at the same time the domestics are looking to flee the US. It is you who are niave to think that people believe Honda made this decision for reasons other than the bottom line. The domestics and foreign manufacturers all have the same goal – make money. Honda and Toyota can make money manufacturing in the US while Ford and GM shutter plants and look south. I find it hilarious that foreign manufactueres come to America and prove that building competatively in America is a viable option, even when they could just as easily opened the new plant in China. Yet, we got guys like post #2 spewing their ignorant filth.

Who cares WHY they are doing it, Alexander. We get the jobs. That’s a bad thing? You’d rather have 2,000 unemployed Hoosiers doing Lord knows what with all that free time? I’d say that’s pretty ignorant thinking.

Alexander, when a company starts ANY business… they dont start it thinking… oh hey im going to start a company so I can hire Americans. Companies are out to make money. If I were to have a company, my first interest wouldnt be if YOU had a job, it would be how can I create wealth for the company. You just happen to get a job as a result. If your that concerned about people having jobs then start your own JOB company and give people jobs. People are responsible for their own careers/jobs… Im not depending on GM , FORD, HONDA or the government for a job… get yourself a skillset and then become marketable. Its just a fact of life some people are financially worth less then the minimum wage… and some people are worth millions. But dont blame other people cuz youve lost your job… do something about it
as far as #2, do you live in a cave?
Obviously the Asian’s are doing something right… it would be in the best interest of other automakers to observe and expand their “skillset” … nuff said.

Say what you want about the big three going elsewhere and Toyonda building here, the numbers don’t lie. The Japanese companies aren’t coming close to employing as many as the big three. I’m not telling you not to buy Japanese cars but, Toyota really wants you to think they care (they don’t). Did you hear about the secret FJ recall? They released it online not through the media. As an American you really should want GM/Ford to build something you want, if you truly are not biased as you claim not to be. I believe GM is going to start doing so, that is if you like cars basically on par with anything in terms of quality, yet with true American style that no foreign company can contend with. With the comments people leave here it seems that most of you, no matter what, will never consider an American car. Is this because of the weak offerings? Or just bias? As an auto enthusiast I would be thrilled to see some great GM/Ford offerings because I would prefer to buy an American car, though I won’t limit myself to them.

Ahk-Med, I don’t think I should do this, but you can find it at http://www.GMinsidenews.com
I know, I know, but it is actually a very good site for the auto enthusiast if you can get over the heavy GM bias. Many members have been getting banned lately for anti-gm flaming in the forums so if you did not know of the site and wish to join the forums, be careful, there is an anti-trolling policy and the staff members tend to lean towards the GM side of the argument since it is a GM fan site first and foremost. Oh yeah and Toyota gets beat on a lot there, no surprise.

I dislike Ford and GM, especially GM, because of the arrogant, old-fashioned corporate culture of the companies. Toyota is much more humble, and I believe they would still be humble if they were in GM’s place and GM were in Toyota’s. Plus, companies like Toyota are a lot smarter about doing things than Ford and GM, and I have to reward them for that. The fact that Chevy has an ad campaign called “An American Revolution” doesn’t help their image in my book. They need to stop draping themselves in the American flag and just legitimately compete.

Honda doesn’t employ as many people because it’s not as large a carmaker as GM. No offense, but “duh.”
I really don’t see how this could possibly be interpreted as a bad thing. 2,000 more jobs for Americans, and more business for Honda, which means more money for its American shareholders. You can selectively pick out stories that make Toyota and Honda look bad, like the FJ Cruiser recall, of course. All carmakers have flaws and occasionally make bonehead moves. Here’s another tidbit: GM’s 3.4-liter V6 is made in China.
I’d really like to know how many of the people who hate Hondas just because they’re Hondas have driven one. 1cd3og, Alexander, Anonymous, what Japanese cars have you driven in the last five years? And which of their domestic-branded rivals have you driven to compare? What, exactly, was so bad about the Japanese cars that their American rivals did so well?
I wouldn’t suggest that all Japanese cars are superior, because they’re not. It all depends on the car and the market segment. But you guys seem to be running your mouths without any real experience or information. More likely, you’re simply racists who don’t have any real reason for being as hostile as you are to a group of people who never did anything to you personally.

The Impala is better built and better looking than the Avalon
The Cobalt and Ion blow the Civic and Corolla out of the water
The Cadillac lineup pummels the Lexus and Acura lineup as well as any other lineup in the world
The Buick lineup is far more entertaining and better built than Toyota
The Equinox and Torrent are head and shoulders better than the CRV and RAV4
The interior and build wuality of the Buick Teraza is worlds better than the Odyssey and Sienna. THe other minivans are just as competent if not a smidge better
The Solstice and Sky are better built and better performing than the S2000 or the Toyota, um well nothing it seems…
Full size trucks and SUV’s are reigning supreme over anything Toyota puts out.
Toyota has nothing to match Hummer either. Hummer being the king of SUV’s, best styled, best built, toughest trucks on the road that get lambasted for such a minor issue of fuel consumption. If the media didn’t make such a hollar about the fuel prices, the public wouldn’t be so blindly offended by these top notch trucks and more fools would wake up and buy one instead of some poser Toyota or other poser truck/SUV
There, how’s that for an answer? Buy GM or you are a fool.
