Honda confirms CR-Z, Fit hybrid for 2010

07/13/2009, 10:38 AM

By Drew Johnson

Continuing its quest to dethrone Toyota as the global hybrid leader, Honda has officially announced the production version CR-Z hybrid will hit the Japanese market in February 2010, with the hybrid version of the Fit hatchback to debut by the end of 2010.

The production CR-Z will closely follow the styling of its concept counterpart, promising eco-conscious buyers a car that is both stylish and fun to drive. The CR-Z will use Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist system – the same used in the Insight hybrid – and is tipped to produce a combined 140 horsepower.

The CR-Z is currently being design and engineered in Europe – one of the hybrid’s expected largest markets – but will likely be sold as a global vehicle. The production CR-Z will reportedly make its world debut at this October’s Tokyo Motor Show.

Honda also confirmed its Fit Hybrid is on tap for late 2010, but failed to give any details. However, its expected that the gas-electric Fit will roll into dealers in the fall of 2010, with an expected list price of just $15,800.

There’s no way US automakers are going to be able to compete in the future, unless they do some major overhauling. Asian and European automakers are already way ahead on hybrid cars that the US is going to struggle a great amount to get to the same level as them.

Tetsujinn is right though,
US will need some major overhauling because, no offense, their cars are getting bad and unreliable and lets not speak of how Euro and Asian companies are thinking about being after the curve.
Think about how Americars were and how they are, it should be the other way around.

Cool CR-Z.

Yea Tet the Volt thats going to be out in late 2010 ????? or 2012 or 2015 ?? with a whopping 40 miles on electric power while the Tesla, who went to GM with his product, will get 220 miles.
Honda has to dethrone Toyota bc Toyota is on top of their game when it comes to Hybrid technology. The Insight needs to mirror the features offered in the new Prius if it wants to beat it. This CRz looks great and I cant wait for the Fit Hybrid to hit. The only company that Honda and Toyota need to look out for is Hyundai. Hyundai will be unveiling hybrid technology in the upcoming years

Anyone (other than NMOFGM who is a complete moron) who challenges Honda on their motors need to have their head checked. That’s Honda’s core competency. That’s what they are known for in the industry.

As for the Fit getting the hybrid treatment- will it only have 2 horsepower?? That think already runs on rubber bands as it is!

The Volt might be GM’s end-all-be-all, but until I hear about pricing more in the 20’s and not high 30’s low 40’s, then it’s a joke. Even with the rebates.

i’m not going to wade into the brewing flame-fest here, but if honda wants to revisit the crx concept – but from the hybrid angle – i’m interested to see how that turns out…i wouldn’t expect real zippy performance, but electric motors do have a good amount of torque, so perhaps around town this thing could be fun…it’s all relative, though…power/weight ratio and efficiency could be tough to balance in a small car like that, though…

Compared to a lot of Honda’s design styles, this one looks rather pleasing. Nice and simple from my point of view. I really hate that big grill, though.

I want to see how they can balance the HP and torque in a hybrid like that.

with only 140hp i don’t see it as going to be all that fun, unless it really light but with the weight of a battery pack drought it will be that light. maybe 2600lb but i don’t think so.(don’t think they will use lithium). it don’t think it will be slow but not that fast or that fun.

Johnny, my guess is that manual is a wishful thinking. The beauty of this price point that Honda will reuse existing platform in different shape. It is relatively inexpensive to rebuild a mold, it is expensive to redesign a car. But lets hope that they will drop in manual and clutch: in Europe there is still appreciation for two feet operation.

1115, Tesla is a $100K roadster and it still has the issue that once you hit 150 miles you better be heading for home. Now that is fine for a car that is only meant for rich people for around town usage w/o need for carrying more than 2 people BUT it does not meet the wants of most consumers.

Not sure what your comment on the Volt timing is meant to show but perhaps you missed the latest that it is ahead of schedule and coming out in ‘10. Again, your constant try to bring misinformation here shows that you cannot bring unbiased opinions here.

All Honda has to do is bring out a competitive hybrid to the Prius at a competitive price and it will sell as well as hybrids do, which all depends on the price of gas.

We REALLY need to debunk this 220 miles of Tesla vs. 40 miles for the Volt. 40 miles is 75% of Americans without using one drop of gas. HERE”S THE DIFFERENCE: You can drive up to 640 miles with the Volt. With a Tesla you can’t drive from Detroit to Chicago, or LA to San Francisco, or whatever “road trip” you intend. Who out there hasn’t hit the open road for an extended trip (or never intends to)? Lastly who out there can afford 90k? On a 4 year lease that’s 1,875 a month! + insurance. Sorry, admittedly 35k after the tax reimbursement is a lot, but it’s still within range for this technology.

The rest of you yahoos who don’t care bout such things can go bu a POS Toyota or Honda and we’ll be laughing at your sorry ass vehicle as its once again stuck on the median strip of the highway. If the cars don’t sell who cares… the gubment will always bail them out. They have no reason to build anything else. Fit Hybrid sounds cool. I’m not much of a Fit lover, myself, but I see them everywhere. They are more of a looker than the Yaris, too.

CR-Z sounds even cooler. 140 hp is enough to have fun with if the weight stays down.

It’s tough for these automakers to make the CAFE and safety standards, all the while keeping the price down. Pretty soon, we’ll be buying cars with technology from Lockheed and Grumman. I’m sure we’ll be paying for it, too.

Okay, here’s the difference between the Tesla and the Volt (which shouldn’t even be in this discussion):

Tesla is an EV that goes 225 miles on a single charge, and then has to be recharged for no less than four hours. Tesla Roadster is also considered a supercar, and therefore is priced as such.

Volt is a serial hybrid that can run on EV only for 40 miles, runs on gasoline (to charge the batteries) for 600 more miles, and then it can be refilled at a normal gasoline filing station within a few minutes. The Volt is considered a family car, and is priced a bit high for my wallet, but it’s much more affordable.

The two vehicles are not comparable in any other way than the fact that an electric motor drives the wheels. One of them actually uses gasoline, the other never does. One must be charged via an outlet in a house or other building, the other doesn’t “need” to be plugged in ever in order to operate.

Neither is superior. It’s like saying green is better than red. It all depends on the use of it, and the needs of the individual.
