Honda has announced that it will field a heavily-modified CR-Z in the GT 300 class of Japan's popular Super GT race series.

Dubbed CR-Z GT, the track-only two-seater is powered by a 2.8-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that works in conjunction with a Mugen-tuned hybrid system.

Honda did not release any performance figures for the V6-powered CR-Z but it will undoubtedly churn out more than the stock CR-Z's 122 horsepower.

Aesthetically speaking the CR-Z GT is noticeably lower and wider than the model that is found at Honda dealers. It is fitted with a massive rear spoiler that improves downforce, a must on the track.

The CR-Z GT is fitted with a full roll cage, a race-spec steering wheel and two bucket seats. The coupe's glass windows have been replaced with weight-saving Plexiglas units.

The CR-Z GT is scheduled to make its world debut at the Sugo GT 300km Race that will take place in Japan on the 28th and the 29th of July. When it shows up at the starting line it will face stiff competition from both Lexus and Nissan.

Mugen enthusiasts shouldn't get their checkbooks out just yet: at the time of writing the Japanese automaker does not plan on shoehorning the 2.8-liter powerplant under the hood of a production-spec CR-Z.
