Bravo to Honda for having insight what north american consumers want. Thumbs down for GM, Ford and Chrysler who are out of touch with reality and now fear extinction along with the dinosaurs. A simple example these 3 auto manufacturers had no plan when oil hit $50 a barrel. Last fall VW had a 3 months waiting list for their diesels, the domestic big 3 had inventory at dealers for 3 months. In Detroit they are still waiting for gas to hit a quarter a gallon so they can take their gas-guzling ford expedition for a ride.

If Honda is waiting for three yearsto put that into the US market it is probably due to the fact that fuel prices will be outta site! I have friends in England that own a Ford deisel which they stated gets 48-51 mpg, their fuel (deisel sells for aprox $8.00/gallon. So, my question is why are we to believe that there isn’t or hasn’t been this alternative in the U.S. I presume it is all about PROFIT for the Oil Companies and Automakers. If Ford can build a car that gets that type of mileage and integrate it into an overseas market then,they should be able to do it here as well. By the way Honda’s deisel is already being driven in England. We are forced to drive with gasoline.

All I’ve ever driven have been Hondas, but recently, their lack of torque has been bugging me. This would definitely change my mind.

VW isn’t selling 07 TDI’s because 07+ passenger car diesels need ultra low-sulfur fuel, and the introduction of ULSD was pushed back. VW could sell TDI’s that meet 07 emissions regs, but people would break their emissions equipment with regular diesel, so they’re gonna sell 06’s that work with both regular diesel and ULSD until the fuel situation is sorted out.

but there are also rumors of DCX greatly expanding its deisel options as well. Honda may be ahead of the curve, but is by means first to the party, or the best in the game.

I am still looking forward to the deisel race here though!

I think you guys missed the part about these engines will be here in the next three years. VW will have there TDI emessions issues fixed long before then and honda has plenty of time to up the power of their motors as well.

2.2 liter ctdi engine gives out 140 hp in Europe. They need serious modifications for 200 hp. Especially after a little downgrading because of the stricter sulfur emissions in U.S. I don’t think that is possible in a year or so.

vw wont have any 07 deisels but they are building extra 06 diesels to help demand. it has something to do with the new clean diesel. i know the new Touerag V10 tdi was suppose to be an 07 but because of the crappy diesel they pushed it back to 08. in 08 they will have engines that can run the clean diesel.

i know trucks have been using diesel engines for a long time, as far as i know VW was the only company selling diesel passenger CARS for the last few years.

yeah, I don’t get it. How come Volkswagen isn’t allowed to sell diesel powered cars anymore and Honda can? Do the Honda engines run that much cleaner or something??

VW has stopped the sales of their TDI as they no longer meet emissions regs.

that leaves:
Mercedes new vehicles equiped with Bluetec, and including Grand Cherokee.
Light duty fullsize pickups from Dodge, Ford, GM.

Currently, outside of commercial applications (sprinter, econoline) and light duty fullsize domestic pickups, the Mercedes and the GC are the only ‘07 diesels.

who else sells diesel cars in the states? i think vw is the only company selling diesel passenger cars right. Jeep has the Liberty. any others?. i know MB has some coming, so does Toyota and now Honda.

The Honda 2.2 Diesel is widely regarded in Europe as being one of the best 4 cylinder diesel engines in Prouction. Only BMW Diesel engines are superior

im surpised they have such simalar hp and torque numbers. VWs 2.0TDI makes ~150hp and ~260lb/ft and i have always known diesels to make much more torque then HP. Persoanly i would get a VW TDI and let honda work out the kinks in there technology for a generation or two. but its great to see some other companys getting into the diesel game, this will deff bring more players to the table.
