The CR-Z will represent Honda ’s first foray into the realm of sporty green cars, but the Japanese automaker is considering moving forward with an all-out eco friendly sports car. A thinly veiled production version of the CR-Z is currently on display at the Tokyo Motor Show.
According to CEO Takanobu Ito, Honda is seriously considering producing and environmentally friendly sports car. “I would like to make a sports car,” Ito told Automotive News at the Tokyo Motor Show. “Once we have that technology and once we have cash on hand, I would like to see Honda have a sports car that symbolizes our technology.”
Ito said the car would not be along the lines of the recently unveiled Lexus LFA , but added the green sportster would have “great performance”.
If given the green light, the eco friendly sports car could take the place of Honda ’s DOA NSX supercar – albeit at a lower price point. Honda’s plans for a V10 powered sports car were curbed after the crash of the global economy and the general shift towards greener vehicles.
Ito failed to elaborate on what type of powertrain would be fitted to the green sports car, but an all-electric setup seems like a distinct possibility.
