The Honda Odyssey, redesigned in 2005 and given an exterior styling refresh for 2008, is rated by many reviewers as the best minivan on the market. The Odyssey is priced from $26,000 to over $40,000 with equipment and trim levels for every pocketbook.
A powerful 244-horsepower V6 engine with five-speed automatic transmission is standard across the lineup. Easily-configured seating can accommodate up to eight passengers. Though heavy, this van is satisfying to drive, with handling that matches many full-size sedans.
Four trim levels are available. The base LX is equppped with manual doors and seats and 60/40 fold-down rear seats. The EX adds power side doors and three-zone climate control, storable second seat, CD changer with steering wheel audio controls, power driver's seat and alloy wheels.
The next-level EX-L is equipped with the Variable Cylinder Management iVTEC version of the V6, which can de-activate three cylinders at cruising speeds which improves fuel efficenc, as well leather upholstery and heated front seats, and optional navigation system, and rear-seat DVD entertainment system.
At the top of the line, the Touring has the iVTEC engine, power everything, stowable bucket second seats with removable console, more speakers and standard rear-seat DVD entertainment system to which can be added stiffer suspension with PAX run-flat tires and a navigation system.
With a curb weight of nearly 4700 pounds, fuel efficiency of 16 city and 23 highway (17 and 25 with iVEC engine) isn't much different from most sport-utilities. As a high-powered, full-sized minivan, the Odyssey is capable of towing up to 3500 pounds and can carry up to 147 cubic feet of cargo and even with a full passenger load, there is space for 38 cubic feet of luggage.
Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes, with traction and antiskid control, telescoping steering wheel, and front, side curtain and rear side air bags.
