Commodore you brought forth my argument. Honda cars are designed and build in US. Profits are going to Japan, and why not Honda did invest money into operation. But if we look at US “little” 3 there are no profits to stay here. And don’t blame unions on everything. I am not fan of unions, but unions did not produce Saturn Ion, Ford Taurus, Chrysler disastrous lineup. Former “big 3″ can’t design and build a passenger car in US for fukc sake! How exciting are those Tauruses? Anything of interest at GM is of European or Australian origin. In NY Times article today stated that only 55% of Chevy Equinox and sister Pontiac are from US. Engine from China(!) and tranny from Japan. No awards from GM to its supplier!

Boring or not, Toyota and Honda make fuel efficient reliable cars. Hondas handle better but Toyotas are more comfy. They’re both pretty affordable and have excellent resale. What more could people ask for? Surely you’re not going to get luxury and sports handling in a 20k accord or camry. At the end of the day, you can always shell out an extra 20+grand for sportier cars. Personally, I’d rather drive a Honda or Toyota than to blow away the extra cash on a less reliable German counterpart. Do I love sports cars and great handling? Sure. But if you ask me if I mind taking my German car to the dealer every other week, then the answer is of course. You can buy a 5 yr old used civic and will take you wherever you want and never hiccup. On the other hand, you can buy a brand new bmw and your fuel pump will leave you stranded within the first 200 miles and your car will be at the stealership for 30 days.

Commodore – one of the reasons is the manufacturing methodology used. There are no unions at Honda plants, which means workers are actually accountable for what they do. As well, individuals are empowered to stop the line if they find a quality issue. As an example, my dad used to work for the company that supplies arm rests for Toyota. if there was a blemish discovered on the underside of an arm rest, the entire lot could be rejected. Requiring higher quality of suppliers results in a higher quality vehicle.

Hey, if Honda wants to spend $1.5 billion in the US for an Indiana plant, I am not complaining.
Also, notice how 76% of Honda’s cars sold here, were built here. Can someone explain to me how Japanese cars are of better quality than American cars 80% of which are built here? The same people – Americans – built them so why is Honda quality supposedly better? It’s too bad that unlike with GM, Honda’s profits don’t stay in America but rather go back to Japan and America only sees a minimal amount of those profits but its still nice to hear that so many Honda’s are American made
