Honda Motor Co. has announced a new recall concerning faulty lost motion springs used in the Fit, Freed and City vehicles sold worldwide, with the total number of affected vehicles tallying nearly 700,000.

In North America there are roughly 120,000 vehicles included in the recall, with some 97,000 located in the U.S. – all Fit subcompact models, model years 2009 and 2010.

The issue specifically stems from faulty lost motion springs which act in conjunction with the movement of the rocker arms, and in this case, have been found to bend or break over time, resulting in a broken or stalled engine.

The recall was initiated after over 100 complaints were filed worldwide, with over 70 being logged in the automaker’s home market of Japan, the nation where it sold most of the affected vehicles.

The latest recall on the Fit is the second in two months, with a headlight switch triggering a 1.35 million vehicle worldwide recall on the 2007 and 2008 Fit two months and one day ago.
