Honda says it is expanding an earlier recall of Accord, Civic and Acura TL vehicles over a faulty airbag inflator that could send shrapnel through an inflated airbag. The recall now affects a total of 440,000 vehicles.
One fatality and a number of injuries have occurred as a result of the defective airbag inflator, a Honda representative said. The problem isn’t actually new, but rather expands a recall announced late last year.

The recall covers certain 2001 and 2002 Accords, 2001 Civics and 2002 and 2003 Acura TL sedans. The news earlier this week that Honda had recalled about 300,000 later model Accords was incorrectly linked to this issue; the only Accords affected are from 2001 and 2002.

Owners of affected Accords, Civics and TLs should contact their local dealerships immediately if they have any questions or concerns, Honda says, or they can visit the Owner Link section of honda.com.
