With the Super Bowl now less than a week away, Honda has announced its advertising plans for the big game. The Japanese automaker will run two 60-second spots during the game, including Acura’s first-ever Super Bowl commercial.
Both commercials will be star-studded, with Acura’s commercial featuring celebrity car gurus Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno. The ad features Seinfeld bargaining for the rights to the first NSX super car off the production line, but the comedian is ultimately foiled by Leno, who appears in a “jet-pack flying-squirrel suit”.
Paying tribute to the 1980s cult classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Honda’s second spot features actor Mathew Broderick blowing off a day at work to enjoy his Honda CR-V. The commercial is a pretty dead-on ringer for the movie, and even features Broderick singing in a parade and a parking attended taking his CR-V for a joy ride. We also like the added touch of the valet calling Broderick’s name.
“We want to entertain an audience, engage them into the brand and generate buzz and excitement,” Mike Accavitti, American Honda’s chief marketing officer, told Automotive News. “The ads convey the product, message and brand in a memorable way to our target in a relevant way. That’s what you want.”
Honda will air 30-second versions of the commercials throughout the spring.
