Honda to recall half a million cars at cost of $24M

Honda said today it would recall and repair some 561,594 vehicles to fix a faulty ignition switch that could cause the engine to stop. The recall will cost the Japanese automaker 2.73 billion yen ($23.70 million), according to Reuters. Odyssey, CR-V and Step Wgn vehicles are affected in Japan and North America. However, most of the recalls outside Japan cover the Odyssey minivan.

Amazing! Cars that are over 10 years old are voluntarily recalled.

“five people in Japan suffered burns from contact with melted ignition switches.”

Voluntary? Maybe from the standpoint of the NHTSA, but there was probably preassure from the domestic (Japanese) transportation department.

Either way, it comes down to a cost basis, regardless of whether it is domestic or foreign.

Anyone who praises “voluntary” recalls should re-watch Fight Club. Specifically the scene where Edward Norton describes a process by which a major automaker decides whether or not to issue a recall.

Where is the clown that posted yesterday that the Chevrolet HHR was unreliable and consumers should stick to the Odyssey?

My mom had a 1999 Accord, we got recall and problem notices all the damn time. Honda reliablity is no better than any domestic.

What’s with the praise to foreign auto makers for having recalls? If this were an american company, I’d read nothing but crap from people on here. In just the past week I’ve read about Nissan, Toyota, and Honda recalls (the funniest being Nissan for cars catching on fire). We all know people would be giving Ford or GM crap if they had a recall. Why not give the foreign auto makers crap for having to do recalls? I guess some think it better to support foreign companies than domestic companies. The news bias in the auto industry seems just as bad as with any other news.

Okay, my mistake. I didn’t read anything about a Nissan recall, just about the motors eating up tons of oil and a few of them catching on fire.

Ahk-Med:
you are a moron.

1) GM’s side saddle gas tank fire problem = Dateline NBC Pyrotechnics.

2) Ford’s Explorer rollover = underinflated tires. could have happened to ANY tire on ANY make/model.

“Had either company recalled and repaired before it got such huge attention those issues would have never been what they are now. That being examples of not how to handle a recall”

^^^ had a major news organization purposely boobytrapped a Prius and videotaped/broadcast it careening out of control after they purposely cut the steering shaft, it too would have gotten huge attention. Just like the Suzuki Sammi, the small dodge econo of the 80’s, etc.

Don’t forget Audi and unintended acceleration. Another rigged up vehicle. (DateLine again?)
