Honda Motor Company has announced a new technical service bulletin (TSB) aimed at reprogramming the computers in some 90,000 Civic Hybrid models after discovering that the factory tuning could result in premature battery degradation.

Honda says that the TSB will apply to certain 2006 through 2008 model year Civic Hybrid sedans, which may suffer battery failure "much earlier" than the eight-year, 100,000 mile battery warranty, according to a report by Bloomberg. The reprogramming will affect 90,000 vehicles in the U.S., as well as 16,000 units in Japan which began being serviced in July.

There are some additional vehicles outside of the U.S. and Japanese markets which suffer from the same defect, but according to Honda, the majority are found in those two markets.

When questioned about the details surrounding the discovery of the problem and whether or not customers have already suffered from prematurely failing batteries, Honda spokeswoman, Christina Ra, told Bloomberg she was unsure. Ra also clarified that the vehicles will not be subject to a recall as the issue does not pose any safety risks.
