Honda is officially pulling the plug on UK sales of its Civic Type R hot hatch. UK sales of the peppy Civic Type R are slated to come to a close by December of this year.
Honda will stop sales of the Civic Type R due to upcoming emissions regulations. The 2.0L engine in the VTEC doesn’t comply with upcoming EuroV emission rules, and Honda has determined that the cost of making the mill compliant doesn’t make for a strong business case.
Since launching in January 2007, more than 12,000 UK buyers have snatched up the futuristic Civic Type R. Despite the UK sales halt, the Honda’s Swindon plant will continue to make Civic Type Rs for the other markets, including Australia and South Africa.
In order to send the car off, Honda will hold a Civic Type R event at the Silverstone round of the British Touring Car Championship. Special parking will be available for Type R owners and one lucky winner will be able to do a lap of the Northamptonshire. For those wanting to get in on the August 22 event, Honda is now offering incentives on all Civic Type R models.
A new version of the Type R could resurface in the UK in the coming years as a new version of the Civic is planned for next year.
