Ford ’s design director Peter Horbury says the automaker needs to produce polarizing vehicles rather than designs leave shoppers indifferent. “If you have a huge customer base and try not to upset anybody, you’ll never excite anybody,” Horbury told the Detroit Free Press. “You’ll never create something that 100% of people love. You’ll find 100% don’t notice it.” Instead, Ford needs to take some risks, he said. “If I designed something half the American public hated, I wouldn’t mind as long as the other half loved it. That’s a lot of people, half the American population.” He also said Ford needs to design vehicles that all look like Fords without looking exactly alike.
