The Lincoln MKX and Ford Edge crossovers aren’t even on the market yet, and already Ford is admitting they represent a somewhat obsolete way of thinking. While both vehicles will surely be successful, Ford reckons it can do even better going forward.
Design chief Peter Horbury says in the future, Lincolns and Fords will not look alike. “There’s no hiding the fact that the MKX is closely related to the Ford Edge and the MKZ is closely related to the (Ford) Fusion and the (Mercury) Milan,” Horbury told Automotive News. “But the way ahead will be a lot more individual.”
Horbury admitted he was a bit surprised the Lincoln Zephyr (now called MKZ) has been accepted as a Lincoln and not a Ford Fusion “with a different grille.” The MKX has a similar relationship to the Edge, sharing about 50 percent exterior sheetmetal. Horbury says some component sharing will need to remain in the future, but the forthcoming Lincoln MKS (pictured) is a better example of where things are headed.
