Hornet production hinges on partnerships

Following the debut of the Dodge Hornet Concept, many Mopar fans were left were left debating whether the compact crossover was a realistic production vehicle or a fantasy show car. It turns out Chrysler would love to produce the 170-horsepower ~$10,000 compact, but the final decision will rest on whether the company can find a partner to build it. Chrysler group CEO Tom LaSorda said at the Geneva Motor Show that a partnership would be necessary in order to keep costs low on a vehicle with such thin margins, according to AutoWeek. The final decision on production will come before the end of the year, LaSorda said. At the LA Auto Show, Volkswagen and Chrysler announced they would partner to build a minivan.

I would like to see this built. Just enough power to have some fun, enough room to haul stuff, and priced right. I wonder what an SRT model would be like. It would be a great addition to go with my 04 SRT-4.

Please do NOT call this a Hornet!!! It is nothing at all like the pioneering Hudsons that carried the name from 1948-1954!!! Call it something more contempoary, but PLEASE don’t call this Dodge a “Hornet”!!!

LOL they’re trying to steal the Toyota recipe. But the formula for toyota was a car that take you from point A to point B and affordable and the cost of ownership would be affordable too.

I don’t think the 170 hp car is going to be good for your wallet in MPG term. The cost of ownership will be higher with this type of car. Beside who in their right mind would want to race a box? They can buy some coupe for that.

The reason why people these cars is that they’re conscious about the cost and the price of ownership. Not to race or to show off HP.

you guys can argue that 170 hp they can turbo it and get good MPG but then the cost of the car cannot be around $10,000 if the engine is turbo.

Point is this is the wrong way to take on this segment. It’s generation Y not generation rice rocket.

It’s a shame this Hideous looking product will have one of the most famous names in NASCAR racing history. Long live the Fabulous Hudson Hornet!!! Chrysler couldn’t beat Hudson on the tracks in the 50’s, now they use their name on this ugly beast!!

I agree with the other comments. Don’t call this car a Hornet. The Hudson legacy deserves a better legacy to carry the Hornet name.

Looks like a repro of several micro-mini van types… Don’t like the name on the prototype – save the “Hornet” name for something that will do justice to the Hudson name.

Chrysler could learn from GM’s mistake of the new “GTO”. They took a new average looking car and placed a classic name on it and there is nothing similar about it. Yes it has power but GM has only sold 18,000 units, in part because the car looks like every other new car and most importantly because it is not a “Retro” styled car that looks like a classic GTO. Look at Ford’s new Mustang. It LOOKS like a Mustang, and since it does, it is a hot selling item. This box with four wheels is a Scion clone. Ugly. Don’t dishonor the Hudson Hornet name with this car. P.S. Hire a new marketing firm that has it’s ear to the ground and knows what people want. Duh!

The Hudson Hornet was a powerfull, fast, sleek, streamlined car, that could not be beat in racing. Calling this shoe box with wheels is like putting the Hemi name on a scooter!!!! What an outrage! I hope people remember the real Hornet and stay away from this thing in droves!!

I have a Hudson Hornet, and this thing is no Hornet! It besmirches the very name.

The Magnum borrowed the main body design features, and could have carried the name, but not this.

Call it a Bungle Bee maybe.

Horent?? No way. Just another little econ-box to be shoved down the buying publics throat. I think Daimler-Chrysler has the right idea tho – it appears this will be marketed, at least initially, for the European market, unless I read the prospectus wrong.
That would be best for now – my initial thought would be to shoot the poor little thing and put it out of it’s misery of trying to live up to the reputation of the NASCAR Hornets.

Please do not use the Hornet name on this vehicle. The Hornet name is a much honored and revered piece of automotive history that would not be done justice by being badged to this vehicle. Give us a full sized, reare wheel drive, hemi powered coupe capable of tearing up NASCAR – then call it the Hornet. Please, do not name this automobile the Hornet.

Call it anything but a Hornet! That just won’t be right. Who decided on the name? I bet he/she/they never owned or even rode in a Hornet, perhaps never even saw one. There is no Hornet influence at all. I’m not saying you should never use the name, you should just have a car with something similar to the classic Hornet before labeling it a Hornet.

I like the concept of competeing with the Mini Cooper, and the market that the car is aimed at may be a scuccess. But please, if you are going to name the car after a Hudson name it the Jet not the Hornet. One square boxy car’s name being given to another square boxy cars name may work,

I have bought my last Chrysler product forever if they smear this famous name by putting it on that thing !!! You know what, this car will not be bought by anyone over 30 years old, so their opinions (and memories of OLD hornets) don’t really mean JACK for a car like this.

Its going to be a young enthusiasts car, who have no knowledge of any other hornet on the market, and I think its a hit. Look at the number of comments this thread has gotten already and i’m already seeing enthusiast sites like http://www.dodge-hornet.com pop up already and the damn car isn’t even in production form yet.

I don’t think anyone can doubt dodge has a hit on their hands if they can really produce this car at that price. It would be a cult car similar to the neon, and who knows, with an R/T version of it, it could really have a performance following as well.
