Hot-selling Impala saves GM plant shift

05/18/2006, 12:30 PM

By admin

Hot sales of the Chevrolet Impala have at least temporarily saved about 900 jobs at GM’s Oshawa, Ontario plant, according to Canada’s Globe and Mail. In November 2005, the plant was named as one of the several facilities that would see job cuts in 2006. “Within our current product plans we have not identified an end date for the third shift,” GM Canada president Michael Grimaldi told reporters after a speech to the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association in Hamilton. “Market demand has been very strong for that product.”

Hey Dean. The vast majority of police departaments use Ford Crown Victorias as police cruisers. Same with cab companies, mostly Crown Victorias save for occarional mini-vans.

Since your probably to clueless to figure out what that means. It means that “cops and cabs” aren’t buying these Impalas to spur demand at all. Rather the demand is from actual consumers.

There are a lot of Impala police cruisers and taxi cabs out there, though all of them that I’ve seen have been the old Impala.

Hey Alexander … since you’re clueless about cars, why not try and look beyond your city (rather, trailer-town) border and realize that these cars ARE being used as cruisers and cabs, idiot.

And the fact that actual consumers may be buying this piece of mediocrity means absolutely nothing besides reinforcing the idea that its design is bland (hence its utilitarian applications) and so is their taste.

On the bright side at least it doesn’t look bad, if the cost was compelling enough I wouldn’t be against driving the Impala, and I’m a car guy, most of the time I would say Chevy’s and Pontiacs look bad, not so with this. Bravo, now fix the rest of the line.

It should be noted that the plant which assembles the Impala (and Monte Carlo) his GM’s highest ranked plant in terms of efficiency and quality. I guess the person who approved the plan to close the plant is the same genius who okayed the Aztec and Fiat investment.

I truly wish they would take the fleet sales out of sales figures – it’s very misleading. Based on my unofficial glance around on my daily 60 minute commute, I see about as many new Impalas as I do Ford 500s…that is, not many at all unless the have the give-away rental car tag in the rear window corner. I do see many more Chrysler 300s, though….

The new Impala is a huge improvment over the old…and I think it’s a great value for the money. But it’s a tepid design with an ancient engine. When I first saw the spy photos I really thought they merely updated the old Lumina. Disappointed to say the least. At least the 500 has a classic shape to it, more distinctive, but nearly as much as the Chrysler.

Its a phenomenon we enthusiasts will never truly understand: LOTS of people buying totally boring cars. I look at cars like that and say: who desires this car? what kind of person looks at that car and says “oooo I want it”?

They’re all the same car!!! Doesn’t anyone else notice that???? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills!!!

I agree with BAMF, and Dave M. for that matter. I look at this vehicle, priced between $22,000-$30,000, and my mind floods full of visions of exciting, fun to drive cars that could be easily had within this price range. A VW GTi, a Subaru Impreza WRX Sti, Acura TSX, Mazda MX-5, so many options, and…and..people are buying THIS? but the fact remains that probably half of the sales are to fleets, so really, there really hasnt been as much consumer demand for this product as Chevy would like us to believe. And even if a person wanted a large, relatively uninteresting sedan, why would you choose this over, say, an Avalon? Oh that’s right, because noone buys Impalas at M.S.R.P., they usually have somewhere around $5,000 shaved off of the price just to move them off the lots.

Patrick… you’d take an Impala over a Toyota Avalon because of about a 10K price difference.

In fact, you could get a fully loaded SS for 30K. A V6 Camry will run you 29K. All things considered, the Impala is a tremendous bargain (particularly the SS) and a huge improvement over the previous model. Granted, the exterior isn’t going to win any awards, but, hey, Japanese cars have been hideous for years and that hasn’t seemed to hurt their sales figures.

I never saw an impala as a cab or a cop car. People with kids buy these cars , not little cars with little back seats. Low price , good ride , good fuel economy roomy car that does well in crash tests. Its not rocket science .

SS. Because in the days of 3 dollar plus per gallon petrol, what every family needs is a V8 in a front drive family sedan. Because, once again, GM has chosen the cheap route of rather than developing a decent midsize V6 to go against the Excellent 3.0 Accord, 3.5 Altima and now 3.5 Camry, they go “Old school” and drop the biggest motor they can find in the arsenal just to compete.

And why are they number 1???

..and the Impala was gorgeous in its glory years. Wait, sorry that’s mostly GM’s story, the “Glory Years” of three decades ago. A time when an American company was doing things their way and showing the best of what they have to offer. Not this Japanese philosophy of efficency to produce at the cost of soul and charm. It may work for one company doesn’t mean it works for all. The ones that succeed are the companies that are different and offer something no one else is. But it seems the the pool of what there is to offer in the auto market has grown stagnant. There has been some refreshers here and there, but no complete facelift, something that is badly needed. Its like marketeers are doing the designers jobs and trying to please every demographic. Well it NEVER happens. Leave designing to artist that can make cars attractive and desirable and offer that across ALL price ranges, granted that the higher you go the nicer it does get, but none of this great division between bland/ugly and desirable. Wonder why the retro craze took over? Its because nice cars and innovation was offered throughout the spectrum and that nostalgia of enjoying the car you drove in highschool has bitten the fifty year olds that now have money to burn.

Bottom line: Make memorable cars and people will buy.
Sorry as to this is barely related, its just been bugging me.

There’s been a lot of new (non rental, non fleet) Impalas around here. And sure there’s lots of rentals too, but the car is selling pretty well around here, by the looks of things. Granted we (Cincinnati) are on the whole a pretty bland town.

Fact of the matter is, the revised Impala, both in and out is a marked improvement upon the previous generation. GM isn’t going to turn around overnight, but things like this are encouraging. Nothing in this business happens overnight, look at how long it took Honda and Toyota to build the reputation they have, and how long it took GM and Ford to get into the hole they are in. Give it time, things will change.

Actually, Mike, you are totally and utterly INCORRECT. I’m sure you’ll be pleased to know that a Toyota Camry LE with a V6 and a 6 speed automatic transmission rings up at $23,620. A far cry from the $29,000 you stated it would cost to own a V6 Camry. So get the facts straight before you start throwing numbers out there like you know what you’re talking about. And I believe i did mention the priced difference between an Avalon and an Impala, and this price difference is not present so much in the MSRP, but more in the dealer incentives because the dealers know that noone will purchase an Impala for MSRP–they suck too much. And by the way, a base Avalon costs $26,775, while a base Impala costs $20,990, once again, you are thousands of dollars off in your estimate of the price difference between the two. And maybe the extra money is worth the premium, you get a better looking car on the outside, a higher quality interior, a more reliable car, and a better driving car with the Avalon. I think that’s worth about $6,000.

wow, a lot of IGNORANT haters on here today…

Look, no one can deny this is a good, solid car. Sure, it’s not exciting, not perfect, but a good value nonetheless for a family car. They did as good a job on the restyle as they could. The interior is pretty decent – better than the new Camry spaceship design. God, that car has the same center stack materials as a 1982 Nissan Maxima.

It’s not a car for enthusiasts, and probably not one a lot of us would buy for ourselves, but don’t just dismiss it as “junk” or “fleet”.

BTW…fleets wouldn’t buy this or any other car if it were a total piece of crap. More than consumers, time out of the fleet costs them money even if repairs are free. They don’t want cars that will be out of fleet due to repairs. AND…there are PLENTY of Camry’s in fleets too my friends.

E M, you’re, so, so totally wrong, on so many levels, I don’t know where to start. I feel like i could write a novel titled “How E M knows absolutely nothing…about everything”. I’ll address just a couple of your falsities. First…im just going to plain say that no, the camry’s center stack looks absolutely NOTHING like a 1982 nissan maxima’s. now that that’s out of the way….oh yes, fleets actually DO buy total **** cars, they buy lots of stratus’ and lots of caveliers, both of which are absolutely atrocious vechicles. maybe i’ll feel like proving some of the other crap you said wrong in another post..but for now, i’ll leave it at this.

The Chevrolet Impala is no more bland and ugly than the grossly invisible Toyota Camry. Why so many Americans have such a dislike for things american is a mystery to me, since they themselves, when pitted against their Japanese counterpart in whatever field they work in, would likely do just as poorly as the American factory worker and GM engineer. I drove the Impala as rental car and it was an outstanding car, fun to drive, excellent gas mileage and power, and it felt good to drive a car with the genuine bow tie on it’s grill….yet whimpy American whiners still complain. No wander the world hates us!

Mr Patrick..what is your pessimistic problem?. You obviously are not having a good life. To get so worked up about a discussion on mid-sized cars, as if to debate the merits of the civil war is truly reflective of someone with some emotional issues. Get a life..who cares if the Impala is not up to par with the Camry or Altima..and that fleet sales leader…..the point is..it’s still a decent car!
