A house committee has rejected a proposal that would have required cars and light trucks to achieve a fuel economy of 33 mpg by 2015, according to the Associated Press. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, the committee’s chairman, said fuel economy standards are too complex for just “pulling a number out of the air,” according to Automotive News. The committee did, however, approve legislation to give the Bush administration the ability to set gas mileage targets for passenger cars, according to AP. “The passenger car system has remained untouched for too long,” said Barton. “It’s time that we require a fresh look at an old system.”
