A Lamborghini Diablo VT belonging to pro wrestler Terry G. Bollea (a.k.a Hulk Hogan) caught fire Saturday on 96th Street in Bay Harbor Islands near Miami. The car was being driven by a juvenile who can not be named, according to police. Hogan has a 16-year-old son, but police would not say if the driver of the car was a relative. Hogan’s daughter, Brooke, is 18 years old and therefore would have been named had she been the driver. There were no injuries.

What could’ve happened…hmm…someone trying to smoke weed and seats catching fire, someone trying to be cool and revving the engine to the point of explosion…isn’t that what most rich peeps do?

Why is everyone here so close-minded? Thinking his son did it?
If any of you here are old enough to remember, the Lamborghini Miura had poor wiring jobs done and poor heat diffusers; they are NOTORIOUS for catching fire! The Lamborghini Countach was prone to overheat in traffic, and could catch fire as well, because it was only air-cooled. The Diablo, such as this one, also could overheat, due to small radiators that really couldn’t last more than ten or fifteen minutes in traffic, because it was also primarily an air cooled design.
And the Murcielago – did VW/Audi fix it’s cooling system? Yes they did — BUT WAIT! — They didn’t put any heat-absorbing material around the underbody of the car, from the headers to the exhaust, so if you pulled over onto the side of the road onto the grass, the grass would catch on fire and cause the car to also catch fire!
All you stupid 12 year olds on here need to learn the history of a car before you start criticizing a driver’s mistakes — and if it was the 16 year old driving at the time, that guy’s 4 years older than you — you should also learn to respect your elders!

Thank you Dr*Manhattan, its good to know that there are people with common sense. “What could’ve happened…hmm…someone trying to smoke weed and seats catching fire”??? Look at the picture, then fire happened in the engine. Reving it till it blows up? Hulk’s son has succesfully built extremely high hp supra’s, I can guaruntee he has enough respect for the car as well as common sense not to do that. And to back up Dr*M, I personally know someone that has had this happen to them. There is not much you can do to prevent it.

Dr*Manhattan – Thanks for the input with regard to nonthinking juveniles.
Even though I have never heard of these fire problems – I have yet to see leather catch on fire either. Simple logic (lacking in most juveniles) tells us “thinkers” very likly there is more than meets the eye.

Thanks, Fatstrat, doublearon21, and Bush for the support.
Now, if anyone cares to look — Go to Google and type in: ” lamborghini engine fire ” and you’ll see that this is definitely not a rare occurance. The top ten results include a 1998 Lamborghini Diablo for sale that had an engine fire, a 1971 Lamborghini LP500 show car that had an engine fire, another Lamborghini VT that had an engine fire, and also a fire-extinguishing system that can be installed into your Lamborghini — I have heard of these before as well, many Miura owners have them installed to prevent their investment literally “going up in smoke.”
Obviously, if they manufacture a specific kit to install on your Lamborghini to suppress engine fires, this is a prevalent problem.

I feel some what saddened that at 16 I was unable to drive Lamborghini let alone have one owned by my father. I am even further saddened that I have yet to do so. Back on subject however, I must ask why the manufacturer has yet to rectify these problems yet if it is such a concern? Plus with this hazard of a car that can explode sitting in traffic why hasnt the Department of Public Safety(in Texas they maintain the driving laws, signs and drivers licenses so please insert your state or countries authority here) doen anything to at least force a need for the flame retardent system.

Well considering his son has gone out in his Green Supra on the tv show without a license anything is possible. The Diablo won’t be missed it’s not an Enzo. The kid is lucky the cop didn’t ask for a license. Hogan oughta buy his son a Honda or something, maybe the seemingly foolproof / invincible VW Jetta they always show on tv with idiots driving then crashing.

Regardless, I would not expect a good fate in that car’s future having let a 16 year old drive it. Be it prone to fire or not, it’s chances of destruction greatly increased having let a 16 yo behind the wheel! If you have ever sat in the driver’s seat of a Diablo, one could say it would take a bit getting used to the position.
Hopefully 50 Cent doesn’t let Lil Bow Wow behind the wheel of his Murcielago.

For anyone who cares. Terry (Hulk Hogan) Bollea was on Sirius radio yesterday (Sept. 11) and explained what happened. The car was NOT owned by Hulk Hogan and instead was owned by a friend of the family who owns many exotics. This person has been out of town for awhile and needed someone to drive his cars every now and then to keep the cars in perfect running condition.
Terry’s son Nick was told he could drive the vehicles and had been driving a few of them. He took the Diablo out for a drive and when he stopped at a stop sign he noticed a smell which he described “an electrical fire.” He jumped out of the car and noticed there was smoke and small flames in one of the wheel wells and he immediately ran across the street to a couples house where he asked for a fire extinguisher and for them to call the authorities. They gave him a small one they had in the house and he ran back to the car. He exhausted all that was in it and then ran to another house for another extinguisher. By the time he returned to the car Nick claimed the flames were 6-10 feet tall by that time and there was little he could do.
That’s the story as described by Terry and Nick Hogan as heard on Sept. 11 on the Bubba The Love Sponge show on Howard 101 on Sirius. It’s straight from Nick Bollea so I’m inclined to believe his version.

The Countach may have been prone to overheat in traffic, but it was NOT air-cooled. Neither was the Diablo. The Lambo V-12’s in these cars are liquid cooled with radiators. Let’s post accurate information here please.

The first Countach LP400 and LP500 were both air-cooled only. Further models, were, as you stated, were liquid cooled, and I am sorry if I caused any confusion.
As for the Diablo, I did state that it had radiators, which would imply that it was liquid-cooled. However, these radiators were to small to have any real effect on cooling the engine, thus causing the engine to overheat, and to potentially catch on fire.
