Following an extended shutdown, General Motors has restarted production of its Hummer H3 and H3T models at its Shreveport, Louisiana plant. Production of the H3 ceased earlier this year, but the Shreveport factory has officially reopened for production of the 2010 model.
GM stopped production of the H3 earlier this year as it negotiated the sale of the brand with China’s Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co. That deal has since been closed, allowing GM to restart H3 production. “If the deal didn’t happen, the company didn’t want to be stuck with 2010 model year vehicles,†Hummer spokesman Nick Richards told Automotive News.
Although the Hummer brand has largely fallen out of favor with U.S. buyers, Hummer dealers have been clamoring for a boost in H3 inventory for the past several weeks. The H3 is Hummer’s best-selling model and is in short supply throughout the country.
Not many changes are in store for the 2010 H3, but all models – including 5.3L V8 Alpha models – will be E85 capable. Three new colors will also be available for the 2010 H3 — Red Rock Metallic, Silver Stone Metallic and Canyon Metallic.
Hummer has yet to announce any plans to restart production of the full-size H2.
