Hummer H1 on the chopping block?

05/01/2006, 9:21 AM

General Motors is considering axing the Hummer H1, according to a report in the Detroit News. While the H1 is admittedly “very important” to the brand’s rugged image, consumers are increasingly seeing the H2 as the “real” hummer. “In their minds, that’s more representative of the Hummer brand than the H1,” Hummer general manager Martin Walsh was quoted by the newspaper as saying. Hummer sells just 400 H1s each year for $140,000 apiece. More to the point, sales of the H1 have fallen steadily over the last five years — from a high of 875 in 2000, to 374 in 2005.

just goes to show how fickle the buying public is. The Hummer is a great vehicle for its intended purpose… that is: M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle

People forget that this is a vehicle designed by AMC Motors back in the 1970’s with production and patents being sold off to GM. Until 2006 it survived with the old and lethargic 6.0 deisel from GM…and in 2006 the duramax became an OPTION. No wonder they aren’t selling.

I can’t believe people actually see the H2 as the “real” hummer…

In my opinion, the H1 is the real deal. The H2/H3 are just dressed-up Chevy SUVs that nobody would have bought if they weren’t sporting “HUMMER” badges.

Screw “luxury”.

The H1 is the only real Hummer. The rest is junk.

Just goes to show that people prefer the image of strenght and durability to the real thing.

Built for military purposes, should have stayed there. Not sad to see this one go. I pass enough schoolbuses on the way to work as it is.

I’m not a fan of big vehicles, but this vehicle does have a place in market. Particularly for ranchers, rescue squads, etc out west. Like above reduce the price, only sell diesel with AC and forget the luxo parts.

Added note, I heard that the military was paying somewhere around $25K for the non-armoured HUMVEEs. I don’t know if that’s 1985, 1995 or 2005.

Maybe if they would have updated the design somewhere in between the 30 years they have been selling it they would not have this problem, but no GM never thinks ahead.

How could they think to cut the H1! The H2 and H3 are just the hummers more commonly seen, but the H1 makes Hummer’s image.

So, they are discontinuing the H1. The only real Hummer. Now it is oficially a GM truck and no longer AM General at all. I really hope this negatively effects the sales of the H2s and H3s. Losing the H1 from the line takes away the legitimacy of the branding. Horrible move. They have to make H1s for the military, why not still pump out a few for civilians? They could even make it a pre order only deal. Most people who buy H1s would not mind having to pre order. I think this will bite them in the ass and the H1 will be back in less than 6 years. That is my prediction.

RESPONSE TO MARC.

If you do not enjoy the ride of a Hummer that is fine. I prefer it to any Lexus, Mercedes, Bentley or Rolls Royce. The difference, the above mentioned cars can all be compared to each other. A Hummer H1 is a vehicle that has no peers.

It is a type of ride that some like and others will not. your opinion is not factual. I find it to be more comfortable. there is nothing like having your arm on the sill of a Hummer in the summer. Worth every cent. There is no other vehicle that can even be compared to it. That is why it is so special.
