Go ahead and pay $5000 more for a diesel option you fools, i wont use that much gas in 3 years for the difference. Soon as America gets out of Iraq the sooner you'll see gas prices fall.

So I think we've all come to the conclusion that it's taxes (I thought taxes on diesel fuel was lower on gasoline, once again... taxes here on petrol is something like 24 or 44 cents. Also, there is such a thing as non taxed gasoline for agriculture... that is, equipment that doesn't run on public roads. Europe has the same thing, red diesel, doesn't have high requirements for sulfur in US), low production (consumption is pretty low too, so once again, why is production an issue?) and oil companies. I think the third one is the most disturbing, and the most likely.

Diesel power should have been available as an option at least 2 years ago on US light pickups and larger, fatter SUVs. Get it done!

SS4LIFE, I think taxes are playing major role in price as well. I think, not sure, the taxes for diesel are higher. It requires less energy to produce diesel and cheaper process and there is more diesel comes from barrel then gasoline. Actually, diesel is leftover or rejects from gasoline production. Because diesel weights more then gasoline it packs more energy per weight and volume - more efficient to burn.

The reason why diesel is higher in the U.S. is due to the two reasons.

1) The oil companies were predicting diesel consumption to sky rocket when everyone was pushing for diesel. They simply wanted to capitalize on it.

2) Autonut said it for me. It's cheaper to produce diesel which is why it's cheaper then regular gasoline in Europe. The oil companies are trying to discourage the general public of the U.S from switching over to diesel which is why diesel is even pricier than premium.

I cant explain why diesel price is higher in US. In Europe diesel is cheaper. Diesel is cheaper because production of diesel is less expensive. Diesel comprised of heavy carbon molecules which are more plentiful in crude then light molecules of gasoline.
Farmers are less affected by fuel price swing - farmers diesel is not taxed by federal government. Actually think farmers diesel is still old formulation sulfur rich diesel.

Now this is what I'm talking about...EGGcellent! :-D It warms my heart when I hear GM is finally going to implement a Diesel engine in their SUV. This is exactly what Hummer needs to stay on top of the game. Looks like they've read my Diesel posts for over a year here on LLN and decided to act on it...wise move, GM, wise move.

I've always thought some of that price hike was contributed to the lower sulfur diesel, but I also remember when diesel used to be just slightly higher than regular. I specifically remember gas at $1.20 and diesel being at $1.50 a few years back in MD. Man, I miss those days, but I find it ridiculous that diesel has topped out in my area at about $4, hitting truckers and some agriculture businesses around here really, really hard. It's getting to be pretty ridiculous.

BTW, if anybody plans on giving me that shitty nonsense about Europeans paying triple that amount for their gas, they can go shove it up their ass. A BIG chunk of that goes to taxes, and I don't see many of you protesting it. Grow a little bit of intolerance for the taxes their beginning to pull, seeing this is an automotive site, taxes on the purchase of your car, taxes on driving it, taxes on your fuel, taxes on driving it into cities, taxes on parking it, taxes on fuel economy (hybrids bring exceptions to many of the fore mentioned rule) and even indirect taxes for the camera's they have watching every turn and stunt you pull and the machines to hand out those tickets. I'll be happy when gas is back down to about 2 dollars a gallon, but not if it has a slight recession in price and locks in at that price with the justification of being "lower prices", cause that's what's been happening.

Diesel power will go a long way to building the already enormous fan base. With people already flocking to their nearest Hummer dealer to get there hands on the hottest 4 by 4's on the market, those who were sitting on the fence for diesel power will now get their wish.

Great move GM, Hummer and America.

Jumbo shrimp. It's an oxymoron to say that because any Hummer will be getting a diesel it's "Green". But, come to think of it, they said it's "a little greener", so I stand corrected on that. Maybe it'll get 25 mpg on the highway, at 50 mph.. which I guess would be "a little greener", fuel-usage-wise.

Ricardo Head, I never really got into the politics of it, but looking back diesel was less expensive than regular gas in the pass or at least it was more expensive than premium. I could see why they would discourage diesel consumption. Most diesel car get higher gas mileage which equals less fill ups and if people started switching they would have to probably update their pipeline infrastructure.

manhertm, I'd buy that story about diesel except that the fact that diesel is more expensive than gas is a relatively new phenomenon. It's manipulated and fixed, just like the price of oil is manipulated to be higher that the markets would otherwise produce since worldwide daily production is actually about 1 to 2% higher than demand, and has been for quite some time although the price kept going up.

Diesel is suddenly more expensive because big oil wants to discourage buying diesel vehicles and thereby keep up addicted to gas.

Hummer should go out on a limb, really take some risks. Try some of them new ideas like weight reduction and aerodynamics.

jjayc08, in though diesel cheaper for the refineries to produce(less refining), the lack of diesel operated cars keeps the price higher. Seperate diesel fuel lines have to be layed that still cost as much as regular unleaded fuel. So they're return on diesel is a little less.

Hey, this is pretty new crap here, direct injection. How can you say their late with that?

This is really good news for the H3. I like the H3, and I think what it really needs is a better interior, nothing wrong with the current one it's just bland, and better engine choices. That was one of it's problems right from the start.

Can anybody please explain to me why diesel costs more than gasoline?

Yeah about damn time. Although I don't know. I hope Hummer isn't too late with the diesel option. With they way gas prices are I hope it pays off I know they get better mileage but Diesel where I live is well over $4 per gallon so good luck.
