Hummer planning H4, H5 models

11/17/2009, 10:31 AM

By Drew Johnson

Although General Motors has yet to complete the sale of its Hummer brand to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co. Ltd. – the deal is expected to be finalized by December 1 — the Chinese truck maker is already planning at least two smaller models for the iconic off-road brand.

Hummer has seen a significant drop-off in sales over the last two years – mainly due to the brand’s gas guzzling image – but the brand’s new Chinese owners are planning to change Hummer’s public perception through the launch of two new fuel-efficient models.

Per the terms of the agreement, GM’s deal with Tengzhong gives the Chinese company access to the engineering work already done on Hummer’s H4 model. The H4 was previewed in concept form as the HX at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show.

Speaking with Automotive News, Hummer CEO Jim Taylor revealed the production H4 is planned to hit the market in about three years. The smaller H4 would offer better fuel economy than the larger H3 and would also give Hummer an answer to the Jeep Wrangler.

A year or two later, Hummer is planning to launch an even more compact H5 model. The H5 will retain Hummer’s off-road status but will place a heavy emphasis on fuel economy. In fact, Taylor says Hummer is working on hybrid and even all-electric drivetrains. However, a lot of work has to be done between now and the middle of next decade, but look for more environmentally friendly Hummer models to surface in dealers within a few years.

Hummer needs these smaller vehicles if they have any hope in surviving…. Unless they have an all-new hybrid H2 up their sleeves.

If done properly, the H4 could really throw the old tech Wrangler a curve in the marketplace and garner some decent sales. Both GM castoffs, Hummer and Saab will probably prosper greatly with their future vehicle rollouts. Too bad GM couldn’t or wouldn’t have invested more wisely in these brands when they had the chance rather than starve them for product development

I could honestly see an H4. Something to compete directly with the Jeep Wrangler. Build it off the Colorado frame with the 3500 engine… price it right, should be decent.

H5? What is that going to be… a FWD box to compete with the likes of Cube, Soul, and xB? Somehow the words Compact and Hummer do not mix in my mind.

Concur. Executed well, the H4 and H5 can be very popular and profitable for the brand. Wrangler is really old school, but I suppose its the part of its appeal. I’ll be honest and admit that its perhaps the only car in Cry-Co’s garage that I am somewhat interested in (but would never actually buy).

Fuel economy aside, quality is something they need to focus on. For the last several years Hummer has repeatedly ranked as the worst on initial quality….with something along the lines of 252 problems/100 cars.

Good to know someone is listening. I’ve only been saying that an Diesel ER-EV Hummer makes perfect sense for changing the image of the the company for two years now. People still want these, they just don’t want some greenie to burn it to the ground in front of their house. EV’s would make perfect rock crawlers, since you don’t need to worry about driveshafts, and the only thing that matters is torque.

GM should go 100% ER-EV for Hummer, and they should keep it. That division isn’t overcrowding any other vehicle GM makes, so all of the other arguments made about GM competing against itself with too many brands are moot in this case. GMC sure, Pontiac a bit, Saturn certainly, but it’s just not the case for Hummer. Fuel economy really is the only thing wrong with that division.

I can see you’re new to this. Hummer isn’t an automaker, they’re a brand under an automaker. They are going to be sold as a brand to another automaker. Hummer won’t be buying ****. And Jeep is the only good thing Fiat got out of this deal, so they’ll sell Jeep just after they clone Mussolini and make him Supreme Dictator CEO.

Raineman, they already have the H3 based on the Colorado. The H4 will be more Rav-4 sized, I’d imagine, or smaller.

And they didn’t rank even close to ‘worst’, orangecones. That belongs to the likes of Kia and Land Rover. The VDS report is also a different thing altogether from the initial quality studies. This year Suzuki to the last spot with 263 p/100v, where Hummer ‘only’ got 221. The average was 170. 8th from last, just after Scion with 222. (isn’t Scion made by the slave owning perfect car company that never makes mistakes or builds a faulty vehicle?)

The H3 is Colorado based? Good grief it needs to loose about 1000lbs then. I thought the H3 was Trailblazer based.

And as far as Scion goes… there is a reason they refused to put the Toyota “badge of approval” on the front. They can build ‘em cheap and crappy and not tarnish their halo.

oldraven,

based on your comments, you’re the one lacking serious information as to the recent events regarding HUMMER. Build yourself up all you want old sage. Anything is possible in this environment. Especially for the Chinese investor looking to buy HUMMER. The minutia of HUMMER being an independent brand or owned by someone else is completely irrelevant here. Lots of vehicles have worse initial quality than Hummer per JD Power but who cares? IQ scores are so low and close it matters little.

the average is 1.2 problems per vehicle and the Hummer is 1.3

BIG DEAL

Sorry but people here really need to think about what they believe and what they are saying.

I never quite understood why no one has taken a serious shot at the Wrangler. In a way it kind of reminds me of the Mustang in that left alone to rule its segment it kind of just stagnates for want of a better term. Then as soon as the competition arrives…Challenger and Camaro of course… suddenly we’re told wonderous tales of Coyote V8s and… who knows… maybe even an honest to god IRS.

The Wrangler’s current claim to fame is that it is the most quickly assembled vehicle in North America. And apparently its scores on quality surveys reflect that. Still, like the Mustang, it rattles off consistent sales figures year after year. It’s great for Chrysler that GM didn’t pursue the H4 past the concept stage… they’re going to need a couple more years of consistent Wrangler sales to offset the slagging numbers of the rest of the lineup until Marchionne’s master plan kicks in.

Glad to see the H4 possibly holding onto life…it looks cool and the Wrangler definitely needs some direct competition otherwise it’s another 10 years before Jeep makes any improvements. Competition is healthy, GM, Ford, Nissan, …China…whoever, get in the game.

the wrangler is an enigma for sure…quality is so-so, but their reputation is huge…and their resale value is higher than most (which is odd considering the quality thing)…it’d be good to have some competition in that market so that quality and features improve, but competing with an icon can often end poorly (zune vs ipod, for example)…

i’d also be surprised if hummer can compete with the wrangler on price…even though wranglers are priced high for what you get, hummer will have to come down below 30k to compete head on with jeep…

It’s not a Chinese investor, it’s a Chinese automaker. There’s a big difference there. Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co. Ltd. might try (and fial) to buy Jeep, but Hummer won’t. Would Acura try to purchase Land Rover? No, but Honda might. Besides, Hummer is a liability at the moment. They are a drain on cash, not a source, so they’re in no position to buy a stick of gum, let alone their dominant competition. I honestly believe the chief reason for buying Hummer is to have access to their technology and parts supply, not so much to control a market segment.

And then there’s the obvious issue with Hummer owning Jeep. It makes about as much sense as Mercedes buying BMW. They would end up creating the same problems for themselves that GM did with four nearly identical lines of products (Chevrolet, Pontiac, Saturn, Oldsmobile). One brand would be cannibalising the other and their combined market shares would drop drastically, once chassis and components started passing back and forth, making them the same products with only slight differences in design language.

The HX/H4 is freaking awesome. I’ve loved it ever since I saw it almost two years ago. I hope they make it truly off-road- and snow/inclement weather-capable and not a poser like 90% of the trucks and SUV’s on the market, but still give it everyday livability. It’ll sell like hotcakes, whatever those are. I would definitely buy it over any Jeep, Land Rover, FJ Cruiser, any other Hummer, and for that matter any other truck or SUV out there.

The best way to make a business case for it will be to offer a 4-door version along with the 2-door. That would make it more cost-feasible to build, it would triple or quadruple sales numbers automatically because it would offer more practicality and expand the potential customer base, and it could compete with the Grand Cherokee and 4Runner and not just the Wrangler and FJ Cruiser. As an added bonus it’ll allow them to stop building the God-forsaken H2’s and H3’s. Another idea I had is that they could do movie and/or video game tie-ins and offer things like a ‘G.I. Joe Edition’, ‘Halo Master Chief Edition’ or a ‘Call of Duty Edition’. I’m not even that much of a truck guy, but this thing really excites me. It’s like a real-life toy and it just brings out the kid in me…Please, please, please build the HX/H4…I can’t wait…I just hope we don’t find out years down the road that it’s contaminated with mercury… ; – )

johnny – the thing is that motortrend, etc – even though the technology is outdated, it actually handles fairly well for a muscle car. The only reason I can come up with for that is that it is the lightest by a large margin compared to the other new retro muscle cars.

Shaver, let’s be honest, it’s the styling, suspension, and superior powertrains that are selling Camaros. And the fact that people have missed them, and Chevy fans on a budget have been forced to buy Cobalts and ‘SS’ Impalas to fill the void up to this point. No one missed the Mustang.

It’s kind of like CSI vs. Star Trek (stay with me here). Sure, Enterprise was a dud and a bore, and the faithful sat through it just because they needed some excuse to wear their Vulcan ears once a week, and so didn’t shed a tear when it fizzled out. Meanwhile CSI is just always there, but since it hasn’t changed a stitch, just cities, people change the channel knowing they can always come back to it in case something interesting might happen. Every ‘new’ episode is like a rerun. But if a new Star Trek series came about with a real budget and a wicked new ship and a well written script, the fans would come flooding back en masse.

I buy Chinese if I have to, with many things I have no choice. With vehicles I have plenty of choices.
Lead in toys, toxic lethal toothpaste, toxic drywall, exploding pyrex, etc etc.
There is no reason to buy a Chinese vehicle, IMO
