A British engineering firm has put together a high-performance hybrid version of BMW’s Mini Cooper. The PML Mini QED has an output of 640 horsepower, according to PML. It has a top speed of 150 mph, a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds. The car uses a small gasoline engine with four 160 horsepower electric motors on each wheel. The car employs a brake-by-wire system to recoup some lost energy under braking. The motors are able to provide ABS and traction control with guidance of the car’s onboard computer. The Mini QED is a plug-in hybrid, meaning it can be charged directly from a power outlet. The car will “not be generally commercially available,” according to its creators. However, the company is “interested in discussing possible one-off orders and collaborations.”

Most pointless car ever^^^^
Change the pulley on the Cooper S, exhaust, intake, ECU and you’ll get those numbers, with good fuel range. Plus it would have those stupid looking wheels sticking out so far that you might clip pedestrian’s legs as you drive by.

The aerodynamics might be the limiting factor in the top speed of the Cooper. It is not, inherently, aerodynamic. The other limiting factor may be the gearing, which is what I suspect is the case.
Think through it. One electric motor at each wheel…. What does that mean? Direct drive. Only one gear ratio. That means that the car cannot levarage itself to accelerate faster or have a higher top speed.
Considering this, it is quite impressive. Why the gasoline engine though? That just complicates things.

I happen to know a certain gent who just made 500 horsepower with his S…unfortunately iI’m not allowed to talk about it at the moment so you didn’t hear that from me.

I suspect that this package is very heavy which would account for the lack of acceleration, given the amount of power available at each wheel. But it is an elegant solution that requires further development of the wheel motors and control electronics. Since permanent magnet motors at this power density are heavy unsprung weight is an issue as is the plumbing for water cooling each motor. Their solution is difficult to achieve, made even more difficult by grafting the package onto a vehicle with limited space and not at all engineered with what they’ve done in mind. PML have done something quite extraordinary. Bravo!

Most useless mini ever. Put your foot down and all you hear is a whirring noise like your juicemaker, just louder. Where’s the fun in that?

John, the gasoline engine is used to generate the electricity that the motors at each wheel use, therefore the car can run for a much greater distance than a pure electric. The same principle has been used for decades by the railways. A diesel locomotive is actually a diesel-electric locomotive, the diesel is used to generate the electricity to power the electric motors that drive the train. This MINI uses the same idea in a much smaller package. As to who would want one, if the price was right I would trade in my Cooper S in a nanosecond. However, I fear this hybrid sould be very expensive.

This car is real. I’ve seen it. It is not a hybrid, but an all-electric car which uses a very small (250cc) petrol engine to charge the batteries when needed. The in-wheel motors (they’re why the wheels stick out) are driven purely by the battery, which is also charged through regenerative braking.
Mitsubishi has built an Evo that uses the same system.
PML claims the battery/generator weighs much the same as the engine/gearbox in a standard Mini, so weight shouldn’t be a big deal. Whatever you think of it, it’s an exciting machine and proves electric cars are moving on very quickly.
