2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Premiers at NYIAS

Hyundai premiered its highly anticipated Genesis Coupe at today’s New York International Auto Show by having two stunt drivers perform burnouts and controlled skids in front of gathered journalists. The official unveiling confirmed much of the rumored information already known about the car.

Hyundai confirmed that the stylish Genesis Coupe will offer two engines - a turbocharged four cylinder and an upgraded version of the 3.8 liter Lambda V6. The four cylinder will put out an estimated 212 horsepower using regular grade gasoline and 223 on premium. The V6 will put out 306 on regular and 310 on premium, which Hyundai says will make it the least expensive 300 horsepower coupe in the world.

Hyundai claims that the V6 model will hit 60 miles per hour in under six seconds. The top-line SE model will include Brembo four-piston brakes (14″ in front, 13.4″ in rear - both ventilated) and a Torsen limited-slip differential. It will also come with 19″ wheels, whereas other models will come with 18″ wheels.

The Genesis Coupe is based on the same rear wheel drive architecture as the Genesis sedan, although as of yet there is no news of V8 availability in the Coupe.

Hyundai said that three transmissions will be offered, though only a six speed manual and a ZF six-speed automatic were mentioned. An Infinity audio system with iPod connectivity, XM Satellite Radio and Bluetooth will be standard.

On the safety front, six airbags and ESP will be standard. Enthusiasts - the target market for the Genesis Coupe - will no doubt be pleased to learn that the ESP will be entirely defeatable.

The Genesis Coupe is one of seven vehicles Hyundai plans to introduce over the next 24 months. It’ll be on sale early next year and though pricing was not announced, Hyundai repeatedly stressed that it will be the least expensive 300 horsepower coupe on the planet.

“Genesis Coupe is the most thrilling, most emotional Hyundai yet,” said John Krafcik, vice president, product development and strategic planning, Hyundai Motor America when the concept was first shown. “When it hits the market in early 2009, we aim to deliver a driving experience that challenges cars like Infiniti G37, at prices more like Mitsubishi Eclipse.”

  1. How can a car that looks like a Benz and a Accord screwed compete against a Stang, i just dont see it.

  2. it is easily can be mistaken with either Accord, Altima coupe and even a bit with Infinity coupe. If it is cheaper then those coupes it may appeal to the same segment that already shops Hyundai. If it is in lower 20K price it may sell. I don’t know what Hyundai’s penetration in Southern States (frankly I doubt it is popular), but in North East RWD car is of little use 6 months of the year.

  3. I’ll be at the dealership the day this car hits the market, I’ll take it in Orange, and that same day I’ll pull up next to a mustang and smoke his ass. Although I’ve already done it tons, this car has a nice flair to it. Good job Hyundai.

  4. While I kinda like this, I think I’ll wait for the Camaro. Hyundai went a little wild with the side sculpting, and that rear window dippy doo. Shut lines look awkward too. 20k is a pipe dream, and I’ll bet the upmarket version will be in the mid 30’s.

  5. No way it’ll be in the mid-30’s. That’s almost where it’s loaded-to-the-hilt, V8-powered, ultra-luxury (by Hyundai standards), full-grown big brother, the Genesis Sedan sits at. That price range would put it in direct competition with the Infiniti G37, and even if this car offered that same level of features, Hyundai is always significantly cheaper than the comparable competition.

Seeing that this car goes more against the 350Z than the G37 and Hyundai always beats competitor pricing by a fair margin, this won’t break $30K.

  6. LLN was WRONG and I was RIGHT, as I called the B&C pillar window dip as staying (in the last thread LLN claimed it would not stay) but it’s no surprise really since I am always right.

Besides having too many odd and quirky visual features, it’s still going to be a solid offering.

On a tangent of sorts in comparing the competition, this car’s presence in the market will shame some in the price/performance category … the MINI Cooper S will look downright HORRIBLE when looking at what it offers at its price … the new 210hp JCW priced at $28-29k is absolute RAPE when compared to this 300+hp machine (I’m quite sure this won’t hit $29k to start).

  13. Disappointing. Fussy styling- looks like an Eclipse and a Tiburon had a transporter accident. I hear Hyundai has a California design studio, so why can’t they shake this blatantly Asian influence. Probably drives well for the money, but you’re still in a Hyundai. And Hyundai, it’s supposed to be a sports car for gawd’s sake, so can’t you do better than a nose that looks like it was borrowed from the Elantra?

Pass me the tampons, I’m getting a nose bleed.

Comment by johnnycanuck, posted on March16 at 12:45 pm
  14. I really really hate to admit it, but I haven’t ever hated the Tiburon. In fact, I really loved driving the GT V6 with that sweet six speed gearbox.

The sad fact is, just as johnny canuck put it, it is a Hyundai. Even they admit it, as there is no badge on the front of the Genesis sedan.

Not only that, but I find it frightening how inexpensive the Genesis sedan is. Where on Earth did they cut so many corners to make it that cheap, but still have the 100k power train warranty? Is the frame made of cardboard? Is the engine made of plastic? How did they do it?

  17. Don’t like the rear window “dippy doo” either. Otherwise, if it prices right, it would be a good alternative to other RWD car. At least it is something different. Again, if it prices modestly, it will sell. I heard the same type of comment when the RWD Miata first came out too, but they have not gone away even when most “sport cars” folded during the SUV boom. Next up, a Genesis convertible.

  18. ^ How does Hyundai do it? They put their money where their mouth is. Not many other companies are willing to ‘bet’ that their R&D will result in reliable (and affordable) performance. Hyundai has a lot of work ahead of them. This being a car enthusiast website and the ‘perception’ of it being “only a Hyundai” is a great hurdle in front of them if they want to start competing with Toyota (let alone Lexus).

I think this is in the step in the right direction. The lines aren’t the greatest to me (but I’m picky about a lot of things, no matter who makes it), but what’s under the hood seems very promising. I think this will sell well with the ‘tuner crowd (very influential). I don’t the diehard Mustang / Camaro owners will take a look at this … the image of Hyundai along with it not being a domestic make will not have them ’sell out’ to an Asian brand. For the same money, I doubt a V6 Mustang will keep up with this V6 Genesis coupe (only speculation but based upon engine numbers .

Give the car manufacturer a few years more and watch people start entering showrooms to see what Hyundai’s got. Maybe a few enthusiasts here will start to believe this company is heading in the right direction and maybe … just maybe, Hyundai might be able to reach the same (if not surpass) the “quality” of Toyota.

Let’s not forget what many people here were saying about Honda / Toyota in the late 70s / early 80s. ( “Jap crap” seemed to be the favorite saying …) And how many people still believe that? No heart and soul is a reasonable comment but crap?

Comment by AxeHead, posted on March16 at 4:54 pm
  26. Not too bad for a Hyundai, they really are improving. yeah materwashu, the headlamps sorta remind me of the new Lexus IS, and the tail lamps remind me of a Toyota Camry Solara. Ehh or maybe more Altima Coupe. Anyways any 2+2 seater, RWD, 300hp plus that can undercut the Ford Mustang is sure to be a huge success. There is a very huge market for this all over the U.S and seeing that the Mustang is pretty much alone in this segment (I’m talking under 30k) Hyundai is making a smart move here. The lines are a little too curvy but it still looks nice. I’m curious to see the interior of this.

I agree with Golf4me on that I wouldn’t be surprised if the V6 300hp + premium model fetched for close to or at, or even slightly over 30k, although it is still a Hyundai so maybe SigmaH it hopefully won’t break 30k. I think it may.

Anyways my verdict on this is that if the Genesis Coupe V6 can outperform or match the performance and price of a Ford Mustang GT, look nicer, get better fuel economy and cost less or even, then in a few years I may be looking into this.

  29. Although I agree with people like GS400 that the car will be bought by a lot of people, it will be because of the price. Hyundai are cheap as **** which is why they are having any kind of success (if you even want to call their falling sales numbers in 2007 a success).

Yes, they are making cars that look less like Asian (mainly Chinese) trash, but that doesn’t change the fact that this car is disgusting and overdone. The front end is retarded, a partial rip on of an Infiniti front end with a little bit of Kia design so needless to say it is ugly. Although the back and most other parts of the car are okay, I cannot get over its WORST design element - the idiotic body creases and back window design. It looks gross! Kind of like the body creases that Toyota is trying to do…next time Hyundai is looking to copy body creases, they should look to the Buick Enclave which uses them in a good way without making the car look overdone. Even if you price is at $20 grand, I won’t buy it because there are plenty of Mustangs on the market for that much since the car is 3 years old now (and still looks better than this)

Not that i would buy it, but this car has some good looks to it and not only that, this car could or may be able to overtake a Mustang GT. Then there is something else you have to think of. What are Fords plans for the Mustang in 2010? Im sure they are going to incress the power of the Mustang since the Camaro will have 100hp more than it.

If you gave me this car, I’d drive it to the nearest GM lot and trade it on a used Cobalt with 100,000 miles on it (Since that’s all it would be worth after driving off of the lot.)

  40. Is this a Genesis? Good luck. This car looks like a low-ball entry and is definitely not upscale. This coupe needs to look more like a MB SL or Lexus SC. How is this car remotely related to the Genesis sedan? Also, without a separate and upscale dealer network to support its efforts, Hyundai is shooting itself in the foot before it even releases the cars. As with the VW Phaeton, history’s failures tend to repeat themselves.

I will look at the Genesis sedan when it arrives, but if the dealership experience is at all Hyundai-like, the chances of selling me a car will be worse than a snowball’s in hell.

I truly believe they could have done a much better job with the styling. I’m sure the performance and ride quality will be impressive, the interior is very nice, one of the nicest looking ****pits I’ve seen in a while. If only the outside looked as good as the inside.

  43. @EclipsedStar53,

You pull up to a Mustang GT in a Genesis V6 and you’ll be treated to a lesson about what torque is and the Hyundai’s complete lack of it. Horsepower wins arguments, torque wins races. And that’s a model that debuted 3 years ago in 2005. Ford is one 5.4L Triton away from unquestionably better power.

Hyundai has already developed a navigation system which is already offered in the 2008 Veracruz and will be offered on the 2009 Sonata, Genesis sedan, & more than likely the coupe as well as an option. Common sense, no one offers an LCD screen without the intent of offering navi , as an option.

  53. kgm is mostly right.. from a vehicle standpoint, this is a much improved replacement for the Tiburon.. but from a marketing standpoint, why would they ever slap the Genesis name on it? It will be hard enough for Hyundai to establish the Genesis nameplate as a luxurious, upscale sedan in buyers’ minds.. but try it when there is a smaller, much less upscale sporty coupe sitting next to it looking to all the world like a $15K Tiburon! I understand they both share the same RWD platform, but couldn’t they at least have shorn the “H” logo from the coupe’s grille as they did with the sedan? A little consistency would be nice if they are really trying to spin this Genesis name off into its own brand.

  54. As I learn before and was proved once more while test driving Volvo C30 - published horsepower numbers don’t mean much. I drove C30 with automatic and it was outright sluggish with turbo in line 5 and over 220 HP and 80% torque available as “early” as 1800 rpm. It was porky. By comparison, Mini with 118 HP and as much (or less) torque felt much lovelier, albeit with 6 speed manual. I could swear (and Mrs. concurred with me since we both test drove them) that we could blow Volvo in a Mini without breaking sweat. Since I don’t own either car, I am impartial. 300 advertised ponies mated to autoslush box don’t mean ****. Or it maybe fastest car on the road: we’ll have to test it.

  60. So, industrial giant Hyundai - maker of white goods, and white goods on wheels - has decided to make an “emotional” car…this Genesis Coupe.

I’m not seeing it. It looks like a grown-up Tiburon - which itself looks like a cheap facsimilie of the Ferrari F456 - sporting a Lexus ES350 nose.

Mimickry isn’t soul. While this car looks to be in style, it brings nothing new to the table. It’s just another line item in the Hyundai corporate balance sheet…a cynical excercise in marketing.

Isuzu and Subaru have better sports coupe pedigrees, and actually brought something unique to the market when they debuted the Impulse and XT back in the ’80s.

The only thing this car does well - allegedly - is value-for-money. What soul! What emotion!

Don’t get me wrong…this Genesis Coupe is probably a fine car in its own right. But I don’t see how it’s anything special, at all.

  75. so I’m a bit confused here. The Genesis sedan is suppose to be their luxury model, right? But, the Genesis coupe looks incredibly cheap on the interior and looks like it’s trying to just replace the Tiburon. What’s up with that?

I agree with on you on the interior, that was the problem I had with the Tiburon, hopefully they are introducing other interior color choices besides black or black/red. Otherwise, no matter how appealing the exterior is to most the interior will be a turn off.

  77. If anyone is confused, please look at new Scion. After Scion this is a thing of beauty.

  78. What a snooze. It’s nice, but in that terribly current, generic way. It looks like nothing more than a rearrangement of every styling cue in existence today.

Believe it or not, I think the Scion Hako is WAY more interesting than this car. Not beautiful, but interesting.

  79. The obviously tried hard to make this stand out, but it has no distinction. The interior makes a cobalt look like an audi, and I’m sure it’ll be a piece of ****. I know a few people that have/had hyundai’s, and none of them like them. Constant problems, but at least you get a warranty forever.

  82. What’s with all you badge whores here? Grow up. I’ve never driven a Hyundai, but this is the modern times people, millions of dollars can get you pretty much anything and that goes for car companies. The morons that continue to bash Koreans for designs that Piatkowski, an Anglo, designed is just so ignorant. From what I’ve read, Piatkowski was the head designer at Audi before he was hired by Hyundai…my point being, the Koreans didn’t design this you morons, white people like you and I did…another point, all companies hire each other’s talent all the time, so please inform yourselves before you start pointing fingers at a certain ethnicity. Oh yea, by the way, the I-4 turbo which is the base engine is the same one as the Mitsu’s Lancer Evo, just tuned down so people will buy the V6, I just read this somewhere but forgot the site. Hyundai, Mitsu and Chrysler co-develop engines, so if you’re driving any of the above mentioned brands and you’re bashing Hyundai like the badge whores you are, you are the biggest morons around. Ignorance sucks, do some research, it’s free online.

What the hell … I think this thing badly needs a diet, or a better transmission, or both!

  84. This is a car the needs to be seen in person in order to make a personal assesment to whether or not you like it. One thing for sure is that it will be fast both in the straight and corners, nice to see some big brakes on it. Interior is very nice. This is taking aim at the V8 mustang, and it will definately be more reliable than a mustang, but anything on the road is more reliable than a ford these days. can’t wait to see all the youtube videos of this thing beating mustangs at stop light drag races.

  85. sccracing - all the brands you’ve mentioned are pretty much renowned for problems. I wouldn’t be so quick to throw a mustang under the bus either. It’ll keep pulling when this car runs out of steam. Also, I’ve never heard of any reliability issues with mustangs.

Comment by hateful83, posted on March20 at 12:43 pm
  86. Where do we get the idea that this car will beat the Mustang?

For one, it won’t be available with a V8. The idea that it will be is just a rumor.

For two, the G8 DOES come with a manual trans - in GXP form.

Three, we have no idea how much this car will weigh or how much it’ll cost.

Four, my gripe with the styling wasn’t that it was “Korean”, but that it, like the rest of the Hyundai lineup, is completely unoriginal. As someone earlier said, this car looks like all the current styling trends arranged a particular way.

It’s got a Lexus ES nose, a massaged Tiburon profile, and a tail that looks like a mix between the Camry Solara and the Chrysler Sebring. The interior isn’t interesting, either.

If this car’s going to push $30k, I’d rather have a 128i or CTS Coupe instead.

  90. You all have gotta be kidding me, if this car resembles anything, it would be a Tiburon, but maybe after it ate a can of spinnach. Personally I love it and would not change a thing with the design, although they need to stick to the wheels off of the orange unveiling car. I especially line the dual style lines and dropped quarter glass. This car looks intimidating from every angle, yet still has a smoothness about it. The benchmark for the this vehicle was the BMW M3, not to say that it will be its equal, but if thats what their shooting for, then out performing a Mustang GT should be rather easy.
As for you idiots that have not realized Hyundai makes quality vehicle these days, too bad for you, because your the ones missing out on the value Hyundai has to offer. I own a BMW 540i, but with all the problems and money I’ve has to spend on it, if I could own a Hyundai that performs similarily I would. With that said, the Geneis allows me the opportunity to put my money where my mouth is, but I no longer need 4 doors. So I’m dropping weight for performance and buying the coupe, but I am waiting because there is talk of dropping the V/8 (400+HP) in the coupe and not just rumor on line, I received this info from a reliable source who works for Hyundai Motor America.
As for performance, I have also been told that the V/6 will producing closer to 350HP and the torque will be upped too. This vehicle will share the sedan platform and therefore have 5 point multilink suspension, nearly 50/50 weight distribution, better bending rigidity than the M3, 4 piston Brembo brakes, carbon fiber top panels (hood, roof, & deck lid) for weight saviings, but painted to match, and all for under 30k. Duh, the answer is obvious, this will be the most sport vehicle for the money bar none. And if you flying H bashers will take the time to test drive one when they come out, I believe you will change your mind set about Hyundai and what they are capable of.
I hope they offer the Xenon HID headlamps, Lexicon stereo, & heated/cooled seat as options on the coupe, like they will the sedan.

  93. The car design itself is not that bad, considering it does resemble a more muscular Tiburon, which in a sense, is exactly what it is. I’m not sure about where everyone else lives, but there has been a huge Tiburon explosion where I live… You see the things everywhere, so obviously people are begining to catch on to Hyundai’s new class and style. As for Hyundai’s sales, they have doubled them in the past five years, something any aoutomobile manufacturer would love to claim. The 3.8 liter Lambda V6 is a well designed engine, and with 300+ hp in a lightweight V6 coupe, it is very likely that this vehicle will outdo every V8 competitor that is even close to its price range. Hyundai is very good about keeping the pricing on there cars reasonable, and Im sure that the Genesis Coupe will be no exception. My guess would be that the top line SE model with the Brembo brakes may push $28k, but definitely not more than $30k. The Genesis Coupe will no doubtedly be a strong competition for domestic V8 sports cars such as the Mustang GT, and quite possibly the new Dodge Challenger as well, considering its estimated 0-60 mph is at 5.2, whereas Hyundai is claiming a 0-60 mph of under 6 seconds as well, and the price range will most likely be a $10k difference (and not to mention the gas mileage difference!). But domestic market is not Hyundai’s true concern. The true competition lies with foreign cars that have been successful here in the United States, such as the Infinity G35 (now the upgraded G37), the Nissan 350z (in essence, the same car), and other V6 or RWD platforms that are similar. As far as the RWD turbocharged I4 goes, I really don’t see it selling that well considering other cars in the market using four cylinder engines can outdo the Genesis Coupe I4 without even using a turbocharger, and as far as seeign a Genesis Coupe V8, I highly doubt that it will hit the market, considering we are already seeing three models offered here, and three transmissions already. Hyundai will most likely save the concept of a RWD V8 coupe for another point in time, when they really aim to take the company above and beyod what it was expected to ever do in teh first place. All I can say is, for starting out as a nobody company from South Korea, they have really taken hold in the American market. Hyundai is truely stepping up its engineering and releasing some very nicley designed cars, both luxurious and sporty. My only complaint is, with such new technology put into these cars, and a model realease date of late 2009, where is the new direct injection technology? Not only is it better gas mileage, but it is also better HP, especially with the turbocharged I4. I guess we will really see what Hyundai can do in the next few years.

  94. I can’t believe some of these comments… the “heritage” of a mustang is great! A dash that only the tallest can see over, cabin noise comparable to an open ****pit biplane and the fact that you see one just like yours at every other intersection is SWEET! Hyundai has a stigma attached to it… but the overall initial quality IS better than all other major manufacturers other than Lexus and Porsche, research it! The Genesis (coupe or sedan) has a lot more to offer in the price range than anything out there. Bear in mind that hyundai produces THEIR OWN steel, manufactures in THEIR OWN facilities, and ships in THEIR containers on THEIR boats! the styling does need work, but, let’s wait and see what honda could produce when asked to blow the doors off a mustang…

  96. GM’s cars are just fine… They seem to be one of the only American companies that truly is concerened with creating a wide variety of cars, including 7 models from Chevy alone that get 30+ MPG. Besides, what do you call the Corvette, Escalade, all V series Cadillacs (including the new amazing CTS-V), and all of Chevy’s SS cars? (I will say that as far as Pontiac has to go, until the new G8 releases, they don’t have a whole lot going for them) GM has been known for releasing cars that have competed well in every category of cars, trucks, and SUV’s, and has the top sales out of any American company at the current time. I have no idea why that was even posted here.

  97. I’m loving this car. So far comparing this to the Mustang, this will be a better choice logically. I own a 2005 Mustang GT, I would’ve chose this Genesis over that overpriced, low tech Explorer V8 engine, poor quality, Ford. The Genesis has more horsepower and has 2 less cylinders than the GT. Probably more fuel efficient, has one more gear than the Mustang. Independent rear suspension, would most likely out handle and ride better than the Stang. Would probably have more options. I believe it will be cheaper, with 5 year warranty. At Ford you have to pay for extended warranty. In a straight line the Mustang would probably win the race but on a track with curves, I think the Genesis would handle better. For a fun, sporty everyday driver the Genesis is the pick for me. I learned my lesson, never to buy a car for the name and image again. Mustang is a powerful car for a cheap price, well so will be the Genesis. People who rag on Hyundai are the same people who shop for labels. Is a Nike t-shirt any better than a lower priced no name brand t-shirt? Yes, Hyundai sells their cars for cheap, that doesn’t mean the quality is bad. American car company’s sell their cars for cheap as well and the quality isn’t great. I don’t think I’ll ever buy another American car again… well maybe a European re-badged Saturn. Give Hyundai another 25 years and they will be playing with the big imports.

  98. For one, the 1st guy talking about a mustang. Now how ugly is a mustang. I hate that car and its looks and how over rated that car is. And its an american car, of which is another problem for me.
I use to own chevy’s for 3/4 of my adult driving life. And once I bought a japanese car, i never wanted another american car again.

Now, if I can buy a korean car, like this, sleek, sexy, muscle car look, and smoke an american mustang GT. My life will be complete.

I think this car is fantastic. And yes, it has a mishmash of cars in its design. Kinda like the designers are using a morphing tool in their CAD and coming out with a sweet looking car stolen from all the designs out there from other car companies.

But I don’t care how they come up with the looks. its fantastic, and Im in line to buy one.

just wish they hadn’t of announced it so soon, now I have to wait.

  100. Ok My .02. This car will be awesome for the money. It will definitely be better than a mustang. For those that say that this car is cheap. Well…..it is. But most American cars are actually over priced and look cheap. You come to expect more from american cars and then you get in it and everything you touch is just cheap. The only way ford can get back into the market is by bringing the stuff they make over in europe here. This car is really supposed to be going after the G37 and while it may not be as luxurious as the G37 it has options on it that are STANDARD that are optional on BMW’s. This car has a power to weight ratio that is better than the G37 as well. My one question would be since they will be making this in an automatic and it is going after the G37, will it have paddle shifters like the G37’s. I personally am from the tuner crowd and see this as an awesome new entry. What is also awesome and unexpected is that the 19″ wheels, lsd, and Brembo’s will be an option on the 2.0T model. I am 19 and now know what car I want next year….one of these. I’m going to save up 25k and get mine like this:
    2.0T
6MT(Unless they make the auto with paddle shifters like the G37)
    Leather
    19″ Wheels
    LSD
    Brembo’s

  101. OK, now for all you Mustang people. First, I have to say that I am currently living in Germany, the dying ground of the Ford Mustang. I can’t tell you how many idiot military guys buy Mustangs and actually think they can perform at all. well, They CAN’T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have seen the results of people actually trying to run the Mustang over here, and it ain’t pretty. I have personally witnessed 3 flips, and have watched 20+ mustangs going to the junk yard because they can’t handle worth crap(yes that includes the new ones). Now, My supervisor has a Ford here, and he hates it. now, it’s just a Focus, but he calls it the gutless turd. I actually drive a KIA Spectra here. It has more power than his Focus, and it handles better than the Mustangs. In fact, it handles almost as well as my old BMW does. I am looking forward to this car, simply because if it handles as well as my KIA and has the horse power it will make a great fun car for Germany. As for the styling, yes it isn’t that impressive. But for the price, go try to beat it. By the way, why do you need a V8 to have 300+ horses? Especially when a V6 gets better Gas mileage.
