Following a series of leaked images, Hyundai has officially unveiled its ix-onic concept at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. Hyundai says the concept previews an “entirely new look to Hyundai’s SUV lineup.” The ix-onic concept, which will preview the replacement for the Tucson SUV, is expected to be called the iX35 in Europe.

The ix-onic concept was designed in Europe and features a “hexagonal grille, angular style lines and piercing back-swept front headlamps,” as well as a special Ice Blue paint scheme and 21-inch wheels. Of note, Hyundai says the concept’s hexagonal front grille will eventually spread across its entire lineup — giving the Korean automaker a uniform corporate face.

Uniquely, the ix-onic’s rear window is made of Lexan plastic rather than glass — allowing for its curved shape. The ix-onic continues Hyundai hexagonal design theme throughout its interior.

The ix-onic concept is powered by a 175-horsepower 1.6-liter GDi engine, featuring both turbocharging and direct injection.

No word on when we may see a road-going version of the ix-onic on the road, but we expect to see a production model within the next few years.
