Hyundai recalls Sonatas due to faulty seat sensor that deactivates airbags

Hyundai Motor America is sending recall notices to owner of nearly 400,000 2006-2008 Sonatas. While not all cars are affected, those that are can be easily identified by owners and brought into dealerships for a fix. The recall centers around a faulty airbag sensor mounted in the passenger seat, which can identify small adults as children, and turn the passenger side airbag off.

A dealership will then diagnose the problem, and if the sensor is indeed found to be malfunctioning, the dealer will remove the cushion and send it to Hyundai’s California-based technical center for reprogramming, said Hyundai spokesperson Miles Johnson in an Automotive News report.

Hyundai expects less than four thousand of the potentially affected 394,000 Sonatas will need to temporarily give up their seats, and owners of those vehicles will be supplied with rentals for the duration of the repair.

Hyundai stated to the NHTSA that the problem is a potential and intermittent one, and it does not consider it a safety issue.

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to just provide the owner with a temporary cushion rather than a rental? Whatever…at least they’re taking care of it.

It is surprising that so many were sold. And have to give them credit - they handled it well, if in fact they will give loaners for repairs.

At least the sensor isn’t doing the converse. Imagine the drama if the bag went off everytime some piece of trailer trash like 400SS put one of his little boy-rape victims in the front seat.

Hemi is obviously a racist hick Nascar loving dolt Hyundai is KOREAN ! I guess they are all the same to you huh

I know everyone wants my opinion on this so here it goes
Hyundai makes great cars Their resale is bad but they have high customer retention and are a great less expensive alternative to the Camry and Accord

Hyundai needs to come up with their own design language. They seen to copy old Honda designs inside and out, which is good bc Honda’s are great cars but its not original. Hyundai is getting a design theme and it seems that they are strting with the Genesis coupe and the Elantra. That design should carry over to the next Sonata.

I trust Hyundai more than GM bc when Hyundai was making POS’s they invested more money and made their cars better and offered a warranty way before the GIANT GM did. Its funny how now Hyundai is smaller yet managed to offer a warranty and make their cars better and GM is still in the process of doing that.

This recall is not NHTSA mandated, it was Hyundais decision

The Sonata is a better choice than the Malibu in my opinion I have to check the resale to see if it is fact.

Tripleonefive, FYI the seats are made by Lear who also makes the Malibu and most GM seats. Also, Hyundai did not invest more money on these seats.

ok … but does that negate the fact that Hyundai had a 100k warranty before one of the big 3 did?
